I have a very "detached" personality. I view everything from a third person perpective, even things that effect me personally, directly and very deeply. Even when I argue, I dont yell. Its just my nature not to attach strong emotional content with anything I do.

Spock, is that you?  :o  :p

Sorry, I just HAD to say that. My defense mechanism is my strange (= cynical, sarcastic and with a more than a little mean streak) sense of humor. It's the only way I can hold on to what little shreds of sanity I have left...  :L

I think there is a right and wrong place to shut down the emotions.

When someone like Primarch is dealing with ill people in a hospital setting, I could see the need to keep some distance to what you are seeing. Keep the panic down, like an Emergency Room Doctor.

When I play a game, I think it is best not to internalize or personalize the game. Now, does that mean an Iraq game would not have an odd effect on me right now, of course it would.

Well said Primarch, and thanks for sharing so honestly about it all! :)

Part of my research involved seminars with the neurology department at the local hospital, and the 'detachment' the people who work there everyday had when labelling an MRI etc as 'terminal - weeks to months' was something that stood out to me. It was almost as though I initially expected a 'moment of silence' or something similar after the pronouncement was made!

Funnily enough I too am often described as unemotional and detached (especially by women :p )! Plus I have to maintain a certain level of detachment and composure for counselling work of course, and people often have a hard time understanding how I deal with the awfulness of some peoples situations.

Hi!

I think there is much individual variation regarding "what" provokes a certain response. What would cause a stir in one person could be very emotionally significant to another.

For all our faults humans are indeed interesting creatures.  :;):

I could be that way when I was younger ... but as I got older ... I've become emotional. ? Maybe it all finally caught up with me ... I liked it better before ...

Hi!

I TOTALLY agree with your sentiment.

I find as I get older things that didnt bother me before do now. I worry more about things that happen to me than I used to. I obsess much more now.

Not sure why that is, perhaps the arrogance of youth?

I also agree I liked it better when I was younger....  :;):

Hi!

Actually, you might be the healthist of all of us!

Therapeutic release of stress is a lot better than "bottling up".

So long as you dont kill anyone when you blow up, you'll be fine.....  :;):  :D

I have a friend who has a "yelling pillow". Every once in a while he just goes and yells into the pillow. He believes it keeps his mind and body clear of too much stress and anger.

I figure, what ever works.

Yes, I've patched up and Medevac'd guys with holes in them and missing parts, etc. ?My job as a Infantry Officer was ... well you all know. ?Parachuted out of aircraft, slide down ropes out of hovering choppers, bounced around in rubber boats, landing craft and APCs, etc. ... and now I get upset over things that would have bothered me little if any, in those days. ?My more resent upset is completely out of character for that same guy that I just described. ? Face it "P", we're just getting old ... :{

Older, wiser, smarter, and better.

Old Age and wisdom win over youth anyday.

Hi!

True. We're older, have more money but less time to game. In our youths its was the opposite.

The cosmic forces must get a real laugh out of that....  :;):
