popped in today as promised (rather embarassingly I popped in yesterday as well thinking it was two dayer.....oops!) everyone seemed to be having a great time, people were very friendly to me, even recognising me as 'lanky bloke with kid in tow' and everyone was happy to have a quick chat.

I was especially impressed by the nice armies on display, everyone seems to put a LOT of effort into their armies and it's a great motivating factor to get my own 'little men' painted up and ready for action (I was particularly impressed with Reedar's Orks). The scene seems very close knit and friendly rather than cliquey which is another positive note!

I didn't stay too long as of course people were playing games and I didn't want to distract anyone too much (plus the kid was badgering me to take her to watch Frozen) so hopefully I'll be able to start a WiP army thread before long and I'll see you around.

Thread hijack over! ;D

Thanks to Steve54 for his usual smooth-running of the event, Sanctuary for hosting, and to Simon Partridge, Richard Laking and Rob Hutson for three enjoyable games!

Game 1 - PAR (Tau)

PAR admitted to being new to Tau, although his army is superb, it really puts a smile on my face every time I see it, he had a standard-ish build, with 3 lots of mechanised fire warriors (one big) 2 hammerhead formations, 2 recons, pathfinders, crisis suits and broadsides

I tried to hit his stuff with markerlights as hard as I could, while keeping my infantry companies out of range of his fire warriors and warhounds away from the hammerheads, I had deployed a shadowsword in the right corner of the table, out of range of his broadside garrison, but within volcano cannon range, by sniping them with shadowswords I managed to keep them broken for the whole game, I engaged his pathfinders with my RegHQ when they moved up shining their markerlights around, although I won, my HQ was broken and then strafed by barracudas, being reduced to six stands, I fortunately rallied them and hid them in a wood, which kept them alive, things looked bad when PAR moved his large firewarrior formation up to mop up my other mech infantry company, but my manticores then rained death on them, killing seven stands of infantry and 4 devilfish, he withdrew near my warhound who managed to wipe them out despite rolling a double 1 for his plasma! I managed a 2-0 win (BTS, DTF) on turn 3

Game 2 - RichardL (AMTL)

I faced this list at the last tournament and knew that running away was my best option, unfortunately I didn't do it at the right time with my BTS who ended up mauled, then wiped out, I tried to break his blitz guard and grab a sneaky win but just couldn't get enough units to co-operate and follow instructions! I dragged it out to 4 turns but richard defeated me 3-0 (BTS, Blitz, T&H)

Game 3 - Monkeyboy (Biel-Tan)

Rob had bought a warlock list.... my last experience of one of those was a 4-0 kicking from Tiny-Tim, so I was nervous as we set up, fortunately between that and the two void spinners, he only had ten activations, pretty low for an eldar list with two formations in the webway. I resigned myself to the manticores being silenced by a void spinner early on, and tried to cut his activations down, Rob had some abysmal luck with activations from the get-go, compounded by his shining spear autarch being off-table, when the spears eventually did manage to engage my sentinels(!) one died to dangerous terrain, and the sentinels got lucky and scored three hits, none of which were saved! Rob still won the combat by a large margin and wiped them out of course... I had doubled up my shadowswords to have a pop at the warlock and hope for a lucky crit, but the holofield defeated them, the warlock mauled my mech infantry in an engagement, but suffered two points of damage (alas no crits...) also they kept enough tanks alive to drive around in so sped away to rally, on the other side, my mech infantry and warhound were stellar, the infantry marching up to some falcons, the warhound engaging and the support fire finishing the falcons off, the reg HQ then engaged and destroyed the void spinner, and plonked themselves down on rob's blitz with nothing within 4 feet to shift them!
Rob managed to get his warlock to my blitz, wading through my infantry company, but the surviving mech infantry were able to march around him and contest, with the hydras grabbing a T&H objective, I managed to win 2-0 (Blitz, T&H) in turn 3

I finished 6/18 overall, which is my highest placing do date, and two wins and a loss is my best result at a tournament, pretty pleased with myself, especially as I've not used guard since last April!

Time to get painting my titans and emperor's children for Oxford in April!!

So a quick set of reports from Sunday’s tournament. With real life taking up too much time at the moment I fell back on an old favourite and dug out my Speed Freaks. This army has served me well over the years although this was their first outing to a tournament in three years as I’ve previously been showcasing the Ferals. However enough navel gazing and onto the reports.

Game 1 vs Space Marines (Charles)
This was potentially a difficult game for me as the Marines could group and launch lighting strikes on my main formations which could have been devastating. Charles had two thunderhawks loaded with terminators and a Chaplin which I had to constantly bear in mind with my actions. The game started off poorly for both of us as out of the initial 10 dice rolls between us we only had one which was over 3. This was particularly disappointing for me as my first activation was to send in 4 Fighta-Bombers attacking a formation of Whirlwinds and a Hunter. Hunter missed, FB’s missed. My next activation was to send in 3 Fighta-Bombers attacking a formation of Whirlwinds and a Hunter. Hunter missed, FB’s missed. My third activation was to repeat the second activation with the same result. The game calmed down after this with normal activations and the orks pushing forward. The Thunderhawks stayed in the sky and only shot at my Kults of Speed. This was repeated in the second turn, which I think was Charles’ main mistake as it allowed me to concentrate my attacks on the remaining ground activations breaking the BTS tacticals. I followed up with my Landa and Bikes only for them to score a total of three hits which were all saved allowing the Supreme Commander to survive for another turn. Turn three saw the terminators finally come down, but it was too late as I was able to surround and destroy them whilst following up on the BTS and claim a 4-0 victory.

Game 2 vs Tyranids (Mike T)
Mike and I seem to be becoming regular opponents at tournaments and this was another tough game. An engage orientated army against an engage orientated army, it was always going to be bloody. I started off cautiously again sending my Fighta-Bombers against one of Mike’s Harridans. This started to feel a repeat of the first game as after some initial success, two wounds my further shots, over the next two turns, at the Harridans all bounced off. Mike marched forward setting up his forces for the start of turn two whilst I wheeled my right flank into the right centre of the table and held back my left flank activations as much as possible. Finally, with Mike out of activations my cunning plan fly’s into action. Mike had marched two basic infantry formations up and to a set of woods in front of my Blitz and close to a further objective. I engaged the far left formation with a Big Warband planning on winning the engagement and being within supporting distance for my normal Warband to follow up and engage the second formation. Problem came when I failed to kill any of the Warriors leaving the synapse rule in effect and meaning that the dead gaunts counted for nothing and my dead boys and trucks did. So even without numbering, I still lost the combat severely denting my combat ability and defence of my Blitz on the left flank.
We then spent two tactical turns taking activations off each other as much as possible before Mike’s final activation saw him double/march his second Harridan forward into my half of the table. This caught me off guard as it allowed me to double my second Big Warband and conga out to claim the Blitz and TnH giving me a shock 2-0 victory in turn 3. (I’m sure Mike will come along and explain what he was thinking.

This kept me on the top table to play my old nemesis, Dave T and his Chaos Space Marines. Dave has the ability to do two things, firstly take what looks like an ordinary list and make it seem super strong and seemingly roll that six just at the right time.
Once more we divided in at each other with my SC Big Warband being hit by a spacecraft craft barrage and then mauled by Khorne Chosen (Scouts) dropping in with five daemons. Aircraft were again taking off without their rockets we closed in on each other. As with the game against Mike we both concentrated on taking activations off each other where there was the opportunity. My big mistake in this game came when I prepared for a clipping engagement and left a single unit within counter charge of a rhino. (Was sure that it was out, but when push came to shove I made a mistake.) I engaged a retinue with blast markers only to suddenly be down on BM after the charge a swing of +3 on the resolution which resulted in one warband broken and the too close Kult destroyed. A sneaky critical on a Feral titan was not enough to make this back up and I went down 2-1 in the third turn. Again, I’m not sure if my final turn activations were targeted at the correct formations and Dave might be able to comment on this.

But picking up 9 points in the loss meant that I was able to hold on to 2nd place behind Dave T who was a deserved winner. My thanks to Steve for arranging and running the tournament it was another brilliant success and to everyone that turned up the mix of armies is so varied now that you could just about play anything.

A quick report from me too,
game 1 versus Man of Kent with DK of Krieg
Turn 1 saw my Orbital barrage and Pin Point attack do a little damage to Ryans 2 Gorgon mounted infantry formations and put a BM on a Flak formation and the Khorne chosen wipe out another Flak formation. Ryan with a few activations whittled down the chosen then wiped them out. A few pot shots from both sides and a failed activation or 2 meant turn 2 would start close to Ryans deployment zone .

Turn 2 and the DP led terminators teleported in ready to attack the RHQ (Ryan had left the infantry mounted in both gorgons) and a combined assault with a nearby retinue and a few summoned Daemons pinned both Gorgons and finished with just 2 stands from the RHQ running for cover (later destroyed by shooting). An attempt at a clipping assault by Ryans Warhounds went wrong after the second Krieg Infantry Co was dragged in. A Feral managed to break the Krieg Rough riders after some poor armour save rolls by Ryan. Most of Ryans broken formations had fallen back to protect his blitz.

Turn 3 was a case of re-breaking formations and blocking of paths to objectives. game finished as a 2-0 win (BTS and DTF) as Ryan managed to rally a Warhound in my half.

Game 2 versus Nat (Horatio)
Turn 1 was mainly positioning by both sides with the pinpoint attack taking out a shadowsword due to a critical ( cannot remember what the Barrage or chosen attacked, hopefully Nat may be able to shed some light on this).

Turn 2, the main action again saw the terminators position for an attack on the RHQ which they did after a retinue took out the stormtroopers first and re-positioning for support. The RHQ was wiped out after combat resolution but were helped by Nats poor cover saves from the support fire hits. Ferals were used as sacrifices to try and break formations and provide targets to keep Nat away from objectives.

Turn 3 was again about trying to break formations and blocking paths to objectives.
Game finished as a 3-0 win ( BTS, which Nat kindly reminded me of as I'd forgot, DTF and I think TnH but it ould have been HtL).

Game 3, versus Tiny-Tim
Tim's report,
Quote:

With the counter charge assault, I wonder if you either measured model to model and forgot about the bases or did what a lot of us do and positioned the models then went on to tidy up the formation into a nice and neat straight line as though they are on parade.
As for the game, it felt very back and forth, almost with every activation the game swung and went down to the last activation or 2.
I was only surprised at the landa coming on so early in turn 3 as I thought you may have saved it to the end and landed it to contest although if it had done enough damage when it did come on it would have probably stopped me from having any chance of winning.

Thanks to everybody who came along to this hastily reorganised event - particularily Reedar who had organised the cancelled Bristol event and then dragged 5 players up from the South West. Also thanks to Evil&Chaos for providing great prizes at short notice.

Full result are up on the EpicUK website http://epic-uk.co.uk/ukepicachampionship/t3x.php?tid=70

Congratulations to Dptdexys for winning the tournament with his Black Legion ahead of Tiny-Tim(Speed Freeks), Steve54(Tau) and RichardL(AMTL). Also well done to Reedar (Orks) and Kev101 (Dark Angels) who took the best army awards (special mention to Man of Kents lovely DKOK who just missed out) and Nat (Steel Legion) who won the Most Sporting prize with a full house of 3 nominations from 3 games.

Game 1 vs Reedar
He took Orks Stompa Mob with S/Stompa, landa, fightas, big warband, warband, 3 KoS and 4 blitz brigades of varying size.

I've played Darren a few times and its always been a fun game - helped by his Orks being stunning, I deployed everything behind cover and towards my baseline, Darren put his Warband in a building on his blitz and the big warband in woods on another objective with the potential to move forward towards my blitz. I decided not to move forward too much but lie in wait for targets to present themselves with an eye on stripping the s/stompa shields to hit it with the Hero pinpoints.

Turn 1
Darren rolled 1 for the S/Stompa shields so I decided to go for it and hit with both pinpoint causing maximum 6 points of damage - dead s/stompa and broken BTS. Darren kept his infantry on OW and advanced his Kults and brigades killing a few recon units. One of my hammerhead formations and a guided missile attack from the big FW broke one of the brigades and the other hhead formation finished off the broken stompas with markerlight help. Most of the blitzb and KoS were now up close so I doubled my last recon formation to block them with scout ZoC to ensure they would need to be shifted before he could assault or use his zzaps/soopas

turn2
Darren went first and assaulted the recon with a KoS wiping them out and removing the speed bump, unfortunately those were his last decent dice of the game. He retained and assaulted a hhead formation with a KoS who made all their saves (4) and killed 3 skorchas for a rare Tau assault victory. I then sustained with the other hhead formation breaking a bbrigade. Darren then assaulted the same hhead formation again with a blitz brigade who were again beaten in the assault. I concentrated on picking off broken units while the Orks lost another assault - a KoS against 4 pathfinders and a devilfish.
The Orks miserable turn was completed when they failed to rally any of their 7 broken formation except for a sole Skorcha.

turn3
The Skorcha broke itself when it failed to activate and the Tau with large activation advantage surrounded the big warband with both fire warrior formations and wiped it out with ML shooting. With nothing rallying there wasn't much Darren could do except protect his blitz
3-0 to Tau (BTS, Defend the flag, they shall not pass). I've never seen worse dice than Darrens - losing 3 assaults where he had advantage of numbers, better FF units and BM advantages and rallying 1 formation out of 11 through 3 turns

Great reports. Wish I could have been there. Whilst I've only made it to 3 Epic UK tournaments before, two of these were Counterattack (2012 and 2013). Hope to make it next year (either in Bristol or Nottingham).
