I had envisaged my defences as being for a planet which hadn't seen much conflict and the trenches aren't that muddy because they haven't really been used. With hindsight, maybe I should muck them up more! Love the standing water idea, wish I'd thought of that at the time! So far as the width goes, I was always worried about this because I knew they would look to be very much on the wide side. The big problem is that I use the old style 20mm x 20mm stands, so factoring in the ladders being placed in the trenches I couldn't really make them any narrower.

I had thought about this as well, but what was in my mind was that under the NetEpic rules the trenches offer a lot of protection. Because of that I felt that the trenches would have to be much more concrete finish. I do think that you're right that I should glue some sand and add some more texture (and repaint) but probably wouldn't add grass because I'm wanting to emphasise the concrete look and feel.
I've got quite a few Epic projects on the go at the moment, but when I get the chance I'm sure I will go back and implement a few of your excellent ideas!

They... have provided some inspiration for me to have a go.
Wow! I'm delighted to hear that my ramblings have inspired you to give it a go! If you do give it a shot, I'd be delighted to see how you got on, would you mind sharing your pics? I'd love to see how your modifications improve my basic idea!
Cheers!
