So after several weeks I have finally managed to paint ...

1 Squad :eh

Okay, so not the most impressive amount of painting done ;D , but I decided to fully paint 1 squad and rhino to make sure I was happy with the look. Then I should be able to production line the rest.

Overall I am pretty happy with the result after not painting much for several decades and I am sure things will get neater.
Scheme wise, I basically followed the normal Dark Angel/Salamander scheme that GW use, so:

Base: Caliban Green
Shade: Biel-tan Green
Layer: Warpstone Glow
Highlight/Drybrush: Moot Green

I then went over the shoulder pads and metal items with black before painting them Leadbelcher.

The only thing that I don't like is the sergeant is very black/dark due to the shading, shoulder pads and face, so I am tempted to break away from the norm (Salamanders are supposed to have dark or ebony skin) and give him a normal flesh tone face to help break up the miniature. I tried giving him dark brown skin, but you can't really see much difference.

Obviously the bases haven't been painted yet, but I plan on doing them a typical grey.
Also haven't done any squad/company markings yet as I need to decide whether I will follow the older ones from back in the day (the colours for the standard codex 10 companies) or follow the current Sally 7 company set up (which isn't used in NetEpic).

Comments?

Matt

It has been a little while coming, but finally, I have painted a detachment.
Here is 2nd Company Assault Detachment in all their glory.

And a close up of one of the squads.

I choose the assault marines as I thought they would be a good test to see if I could paint a round the chainswords, jump packs and bolt pistols without mispainting bits and I think they turned out alright. They did take me a little while, but hoepfully the tacticals and devs while be easier now I have done these.
I quite like just having the coloured stripes on the rhino hatch showing the company colour rather than painting the whole hatch.
The only thing I might add is a small number or letter to the rhinos to show they are the assault detachment as I don't think I would be able to manage painting the proper assault symbol on the hatch itself.

So what do people think?

Matt

I like the color combinations. Since theres a lot of drybrushing I might wash the minis with thinned green wash to bind the colors and minimize the possible graininess ( is that a word) from the drybrushing.

The stripes on the rhinos work well. I wouldnt paint the whole hatches either. Will follow this project!

Hmmm, never used washes before, may have to do a test stand and see how they turn out.

I like the yellow pads for this company, not sure how the ones for 7th (purple), and 9th (blue) will look, but those are the colours they are supposed to be. Well technically Salamanders don't follow the codex structure, but I am using it for the company colours as it is easier than what they are supposed to be.

I noticed the raised strips on the edge of the hatches and thought just painting them would be enough to differentiate between companies without having a big blob of colour in the middle of the rhino from if you painted the hatch fully.

Missed the first painted squad but both look like a promising start!

Furthermore, I think the assault marines show improvement in your painting already so keep going!
Also like the added yellow on the second Rhinos, helps giving them more detail.
The round bases are still very cool! 8)

Only thing that makes me wonder is why they need Rhinos with their jump packs?

Yeah, the first squad was just to see what I could do and didn't really have as much detail.

Back in the Space Marine days (and now NetEpic), jump packs didn't provide much extra movement, just the ability to get over terrain. Still needed transports as there wasn't much in terms of flyers. Was a throw back to the days of rogue trader when assault marines sometimes didn't even have jump packs and needed to get about.

Lovely firebreathing amphibians :D. I agree with everyone else that the little stripes on the Rhinos really help.
