I've got a job-lot of Space Marines very cheaply from eBay and I want to put them to the battlefield.

What I have at hand:
70x Rhinos (they were REAL cheap)
13x Land Raiders
7x Land Speeder Typhoons
5x Whirlwilnds
3x Hunters
5x Space Marine Commanders stands
4x Space Marine Chaplains stands
19x Space Marine Tactical stands
32x Space Marine Devastator stands

I want to build a force out of this with a few additional small purchases from either eBay or GW.

My tentative army list:

Incompertus, 3000 POINTS
Codex Astrates Space Marines
==================================================

SPACESHIP [200]
Strike Cruiser

THUNDERBOLTS [150]
2 Thunderbolt Fighters

TACTICAL COMMAND DETACHMENT [475]
6 Tactical, 3 Rhino, Supreme Commander, Hunter

TACTICAL DETACHMENT [450]
6 Tactical, 3 Rhino, 2 Dreadnoughts, Commander

LAND RAIDER DETACHMENT [475]
4 Land Raiders, Hunter

LAND SPEEDER DETACHMENT [325]
5 Land Speeders Typhoons

WHIRLWIND DETACHMENT [375]
4 Whirlwinds, Hunter

SCOUT DETACHMENT [225]
4 Scouts, 2 Rhinos, Chaplain, Sniper

TERMINATOR DETACHMENT [325]
4 Terminators

What do you think?

Hi, depending on how your opponents build up their armies you might want to try and squeeze another activation or two out of your army.

I would also recommend only having one most expensive formation (BTS) if you are going to play the GT scenario, maybe convert a Rhino into a Razorback and drop sniper from the scouts?

I don't think there's much wrong with the list, of course drop pods are hit and miss.

I'd avoid having two BTS formations, and I'd move the chaplain to the terminators.

Is this the rulebook list? Land raiders got a lot cheaper in NetEA, terminators a bit more expensive...

Rulebook list. I'll have to check with the locals if they allow NetEA as well.

Move the chaplain out of the scout unit, and in with the terminators. Your scouts aren't really about engaging the enemy, but using their ZoC to mess with your opponent's plans. You want your terminators to hit as hard as possible wherever they come in, and having that extra MW attack and +1 in combat resolution can be nasty.

If you are going to take a spaceship, then you should definitely deploy infantry with drop pods. Drop pods don't really play a part in the battle after you infantry deploy from them, so you don't actually need the models. Just use a coin or something to mark where they land and deploy from there. Also, deploying with drop pods is really the only logical reason to take dreadnaughts. Dreads can't move nearly as fast as rhinos and putting them in with transports will only slow the whole unit down.

If you drop in two tactical units with dreads along with a unit of devastators and a shooty dread, all close enough to support each other, then your orbital bombardment along with death wind attacks ought to do enough damage that the infantry can tough it out until you can move up more units to support them.

Sorry to say, I don't think land raiders are worth the points. I know you don't have predators, but if you get two packs then you should have enough to build a two units of predators.

Assault troops are really most effective when deployed from Thunderhawks.....which you don't have. I wouldn't worry about getting one if you can't get both.

If you can get your hands on one or two Thunderhawks along with some fighters and fighter-bombers, then you can REALLY mess with your opponent by building an army list that has nothing deployed on the table at start of the game, then come in quickly with drop pods and air attacks......it doesn't always work but it's fun!

I would suggest building a SM force to have 10 activations.

That's what I typically use with 3k points.

Tactical Detachment 400
Supreme Commander; 6xTactical; 3xRhino, Razorback

Assault Detachment 175
4xAssault

Scout Detachment 150
4xScout; 2xRhino

Land Speeder Detachment 200
5xLand Speeder

Land Speeder Detachment 200
5xLand Speeder

Predator Detachment 250
4xPredator Annihilator

Predator Detachment 250
4xPredator Annihilator

Predator Detachment 250
4xPredator Annihilator

Whirlwind Detachment 375
4xWhirlwind; Hunter

Whirlwind Detachment 375
4xWhirlwind; Hunter

Whirlwind Detachment 375
4xWhirlwind; Hunter

I also use variants in which I use 2 Warhounds or 2 Marauders replacing some Whirlwind, Scout and/or Predator, for the sake of variation.
My Space Marines win more often than they loose.

The following is my personal opinion and I understand that many players will not agree. I use a quite "frank" language. This isn't meant as disrespect or that I do not accept that other people have other opinions - it's only a rhetorical method to make my point clear.

I never use drop lists, because they are a PIA.
If you can't play and/or have the feeling you must win at all cost, than take a drop list.
Not setting anything up, dropping down on the enemy at your own whim, when and where you want, without your opponent having much chance to do something about it.
Using droppods, so you can be sure that your opponent will have blast markers, before you assault them.
Having two units with chaplain and commander who charge together,
intermingling enemy units, which very often can't be avoided by your opponent, if he plays a mass army or if you play 4k points on an ordinary table.
The Thunderhawks are for most armies difficult to shoot down and after dropping their cargo can still fly somewhere else to claim or deny objectives. You might be unlucky, because your opponent has just the anti-drop list or is real good or lucky, but in average this is not the case.
As you have the highest strategy rating your opponent can't go into overwatch in the first round, because you will strike before him.
In later rounds your opponent has most likely not enough units left, to have some in overwatch and still have some free to move and claim or deny objectives. (Which is still important even if you do not have any units on the aircraft, because the aircraft can still claim/deny objectives)

You might find it fun, but your opponent usually does not.

Winning with a drop list got nothing to do with a being a good player - just like winning against an blind folded man in the box ring, doesn't make you a good boxer.

If your down to "Space Marines can only win with a drop list", you should probably look for an other army.
