Guys, this isn't even (necessarily) incompatible with previous fluff. Some Necrons were completely and totally mindless and dedicated to the C'Tan. Turns out there were others we didn't know about. Big deal.
Some aspects of it could be very crappy (if past codices are any indication, many will be), but this is hardly the end of the world.
I took about a 15 year hiatus from gaming, until starting up last fall, and I had (have) a hard time getting my mind around Tau and Necrons. From my 'throw back' perspective Tau are Eldar that aren't elves and Necrons are Tyranids that are robots. I have some acceptance of them, but tend to dismiss them from my view of the 'Imperium'.
The Necron rumors, if true, fill out the Necron fluff a little and make them a little less like Tyranids and more like a ancient race of (somewhat) sentient beings. The older fluff seems to be worked in, still allowing for the mindless evil Necron. While the new fluff allows for diverse factions of Necrons with different traits and gaming styles (which I could see bringing about some interesting possibilities) so really whats all the angst about?
I understand everything GW does needs to be mandatorily flogged because GW is great to hate (hate and love are close right?) but if all GW would have done is released some floating obelisk and a sphinx land hulk with everything else just recycled models cast in resin I'm sure the howling would be universal rather than primarily confined to the old schools.
Things that aren't dead grow and change, including people and storylines. Sometimes what we hold dear due to nostaliga the younger generation thinks is stale and lame. They enjoy having stuff they can call their own, sometimes I think most of us forget we were young once to and wanted stuff to call our own.
By still allowing the old fluff to have some validity while introducing new aspects I think GW did an admirable job in attempting to grow the Necrons as a 40k faction.
