But that's my point; A Gryphonne IV nid list wouldn't be the main nid list, so it doesn't matter if it's finished, since it's not intended as the main list.
I personally much prefer the idea of varient lists in suppliments, with main lists developed outside of suppliments. This stops lists getting bogged down by being in suppliments, as arguably the raiders "main" lists (Necron and DE) have been. It doesn't matter if a varient list gets bogged down.
Not sure I agree. If Tyranids are released in a semi-official completed book, regardless of if you scream 'variant', it will be considered the first semi-offical Tyranid army list, it will be used as a baseline for future variants. When you release a product like a Supplement it's meant to be done, not a halfway house or beta test.
Additionally variants tend to maintain the unit types, pts costs and army special rules from the originals/first lists for obvious reasons- they both represent the same creatures/race traits.
Trying to release a 2nd Nid army list that is radically different from the already released Nid list is asking for supreme confusion.
I also don't agree that supplements like Swordwind and Raiders are a bad idea for 'serious' army release, nor would I treat armies released in this format as variants that don't matter.
It's a slap in the face of the supplement creators to basically say they're efforts don't count, and they don't have to produce a completed army list, as they'll be ignored anyway.
Do the Tyranids right, or not at all, basically. Supplements are completed products, ensure they include completed lists.
I don't see how two new armies in the book (AdMech and Tyranids) is detrimental as long as both armies are playtested thoroughly against existing armies. There is some potential for the playtesting to be halved on each rather than concentrated on one- but TBH the vast majority of players won't be trying to playtest both armies anyway. They'll playtest what they want to playtest.
You'd get the same amount of playtesting on each if they are done alone or at the same time- the player base on TacComms already playtests several different armies simultaneously depending on their preference.
