Maksim
You do not need to change, you do not need to alter your behaviour.
I am also entitled to my opinions
The three main things I object to are:
The editing of thread titles, I find this very confusing (though I know the point is to make it less so).
The deletion of OT posts, I agree offensive posts should be deleted, but if a discussion goes OT then fair enough.
The editing of posts (even if it is for grammar and spelling) but once you start with one thing where do you draw the line... imagine saying GW is a grate (sic) company and coming back to find out someone had changed it to GW is an okay company. I am not saying that anyone would do that, but I do ask where do you draw the line in the editing of posts?
I also moderate these boards and I have never ever edited or deleted a post because there hasn't been a need.
These are my opinions and as I have said, I don't demand things change (I don't have the right or authority to do so) but if it continues I will consider my position.
For me a moderator moderates.
I would also go with netepic that a PM is a good place to start rather than wholesale editing and deletion.
Some people may consider this petty, but if I don't enjoy hanging around then there is no point hanging around. You will have noticed the fact that I rarely participate in the EA forums - but I don't want to drag parallels with the EA board into this discussion.

Just to add my opinions here...
Maksim, there is absolutely no need (from my perspective) for you to step down in any way. You asked if people would mind a few deleted posts, the response was 'please dont', you didnt.
As for other issues here, we have already discussed this at length. If there is only a minority who find this confusing or difficult then maybe it should be restricted or stopped. I would rather live with bad spelling than bad feeling. ?
For the most part, these boards are extremely successfully self-moderated. If people have problems or issues, they are more than welcomed to chat with me on PM about them. Similarly, if the mods (or anyone) has issues that can be PM'ed then this can be considered (as long as it is friendly).
EDIT: I should also have added that there are no 'petty' issues. If someone has problems or is not happy here, then I would like to hear about it. I appeciate every visit we get here, and if anyone feels that there is something that they are not happy about then they should let me know. I cant promise to sort everything out to your complete satisfaction, but I want this to be a place that we all enjoy visiting.

Jimbo,

Thanks for writing back. I really appreciate it.
I have PM'ed you regarding the message and look forward to hearing from you again. I responded with greater length on the PM.
where do you draw the line in the editing of posts? |
For me, I use the guidelines of editing/moderating format, but not content. I use an overriding factor that I don't edit/moderate people's messages who have asked me not to like yourself and I didn't until I made a mistake. I respect the wishes of the posters here.
Having worked as an editor (translator/interpreter/etc.) for several years, I can do this in my sleep (about as quickly as I read the posts).
For some users like Legion-4, since he uses WebTV, he has little control over how his messages appear. I have customarily edited his to make them clealer. He has indicated to me that he has been happy with the results.
For other users like Gandalf (a great guy), I edit out his profane language. He has E-mailed me before indicating that he's OK with that. In fact, he's really toned down (but not too much, Gandalf!

?) and I rarely catch him writing "choice words" anymore.
For a couple of the non-native English speakers, I edit their messages for clarity so that others can more easily understand them. I can really sympathize here since my English was very weak for years. I spent a lot of time studying English and working on my accent so I can be clearly and easily understood. Sometimes I still lapse and have difficulty thinking in English. During those times, my language and speaking voice lapse. I try to give those sorts of posters the same sort of aid I would have wanted at those times.
In the case of new users, I let them know that I am one of the moderators and let them know that I respond to requests and am happy to help in any way possible. I spoke with Xavi this way. He has indicated so far that he's happy with the results. So has ATHMOS.
Of course, I can only rely and act on what people tell me. If there is resentment that hasn't been communicated, I can do nothing about it.
I would also go with netepic that a PM is a good place to start rather than wholesale editing and deletion.
I do communicate with members about any "moderation" I'm responsible for. Before deleting OT posts in another thread, I asked the posters if they were OK with that. They were except for one member so, in order to respect his opinions/requests, I desisted from deleting those OT posts.
I'm also against wholesale editing/deletion without reason/good will. I generally consider permission from the posters to do those things to be a good enough reason.
I'm sure that we can find ourselves in a situation in which you'd like to remain here at Epicomms. I'd certainly prefer that and would be very willing to make changes to provide for you and the other posters/members here.
Best regards, cheers and Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.
I'll just profit of that post to mention as disgusted I also was to see that GW dared to use such name as Torquemada for a "hero" in their range. Most people wont even know what it mean, but I certainly agree with you that it's purely bad taste.
I still find that in extremely bad taste. Anyone for tennis with Pol Pot?
They like to borrow most names here and there, why not, but even if this one come to mind when thinking about Inquisition, I think they should have look for something else.
I wish they'd be a little more creative and make up their own names rather than borrowing so liberally from history.
I don't think it will ever happen though.
Maksim-Smelchak.
