Last day of school... thank goodness! :)

I'm really burnt out... of the hopelessness... of children at the bottom abusing each other... of parents abusing their children... of calling CPS (Child Protective Services)... of working with a lame boss... :(

I ordered pizza for the last day...

The next job will be better.

Hi Guys,

The new Pendraken "War Of the Worlds" film is out on VHS and DVD...

I picked up a copy at Walmart and intend to watch it tonight.

It was only $8.00 USD too! :;):

Shabbat Shalom,

Pendragon's "War Of the Worlds" Film...

Hi Everyone,

I'm watching Pendragon's "War Of the Worlds" film right now and am amazed at all that the studio accomplished with a small budget and limited means. There is a lot of CGI animation and the actors are ones I've never heard of. However, the film better captures the original flavor of the H.G. Wells novel than any other I've ever seen. Victorian England is very well captured and the Victorian
mindset is very well conveyed. So far I'm very pleased with it... especially since it only cost me $8.00 USD at Walmart!

The bad notes are that there is no insert in my DVD package and very little in the way of bonus features. No subtitles either... No audio options either...

There is a trailer, an H.G. Wells biography feature and a gallery of images for bonus features.

Overall, I'm very happy with the film and am taking a bathroom break (For the girlfriend... ) at the moment.

Shabbat Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Hi Dafrca,

*** Dafrca: Do you have toys on your table? ***

Yes, I think that toys and miniatures go together very well assuming you check that the toys have a look compatible with your miniatures.

Most of my 6mm naval collection is composed of toy boats that were in a good scale compared to my GHQ Vietnam Riverine models. Add a few ventilators and weapons and... Voila = instant navy!

*** Dafrca: Did you repaint them or just use them as is? ***

It depends on the toy. I paint many of them, but leave others in stock form.

Most of my Micro Machines Star Wars fighters will never see paint!

*** Dafrca: If you repainted, did you do anything "special" before painting or just primer and paint? ***

I often modify toys by adding detail elements from my bitz box. A few BFG plastic turrets and 28mm 40k exhaust pipes can really spruce up a basic toy.

*** Dafrca: Did you change them in any way to make them less "toy" like? ***

Sometimes, I'll add detail elements to tie in the toy with the setting I want it for.

For instance, I recently found what I think is a Micro Machines army base piece for $0.49 USD in a Good Will toy bin and have plans to add a 28mm plastic 40k eagle accessory to make it into an IG base.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Hi Dafrca,

Dafrca: However, if they did not pull you into this hobby, I would say tell us not your first, but the game that started you down the path to Darkness, um, I mean becoming a War Gamer.

The games that dragged me into the hobby would be:

Battletech (The early version called Battledroids) was the game that got me into 6mm sci-fi miniatures.

Chainmail and D&D got me into fantasy roleplaying and fantasy miniatures.

Many different Avalon Hill games got me into board gaming in a serious sense. I loved strategy board games before I discovered Avalon Hill, but Avalon Hill games were the mark of a wargamer, not low-level "kid" games like Stratego, Pente or Go.

Stratego, Chess, Pente, Go, etc. are all wonderful games, but they lack the visual and organizational elements that those other games have. They are games with simplistic but complex and rich strategies... if that makes sense.  :D

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Hi Primarch,

Primarch: I want to see that!

*** At Walmart you say? ***

Got to check Pendragon's "War Of the Worlds" out.

We finally went to bed yesterday without finishing the film. It's about THREE hours long!

And much of film is a very faithful adaptation of the novel... meaning that it is VERY slow!

There must be dozens of scenes of pointless running throw the woods.

Or meaningless dialogue between two Victorian characters pointing out the PAINFULLY obvious...

The special effects are also rather comical in areas...

I sort of like the funny special effects though... they have the feel of an early sci-fi film, which gave Diana and I a few good chuckles.

I still haven't gotten to the big Thunderbird scene (Martian Tripods versus a pre-WWI naval dreadnought), but I've heard that the scene is like watching a tennis match:

- Pan to characters' faces with incredulous looks...
- Pan to CGI special effect's clip...
- Pan to characters' faces with incredulous looks...
- Pan to CGI special effect's clip...
- Pan to characters' faces with incredulous looks...
- Pan to CGI special effect's clip...
- On and on, etc., etc. :p

I still think that ti's a good value for $8.00 USD, but I doubt that I'll ever watch the ENTIRE film again... I'll just use the scene selector to see my favorite clips to get in the mood for a "War Of the Worlds" miniatures game.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.
