ACW is popular as one of the first 'modern' wars with mch better logistics and transports and improved rifle firepower; not to mention the techno- aspect of submarines, but I digress! That could be a reason; then again, why not the Prusso -Austrian war, which (had similar features (sans subs, though)? I'd even say ACW battles are better known than these late 19th century European wars.

'Splutter' People saying nasty things about Napoleonics!!

Why is it so popular? Because it looks fantastic, has great history, cavalry charges can work, infantry charges can work, lines of muskets and batteries of cannons can work.  Battles were fought in limited spaces with hundreds of thousands of men packed into only a few miles - so that a table packed with figures actually looks historical and fantastic (did I use that word again!). An almost limitless variety of colourful uniforms, big flags drums plumes swords lances. The classic paper/scissors/rock game of artillery/infantry/cavalry. Generals leaping around on horses with big plumed hats and sabres!

Spoken like a true rabid fanatic even if I haven't played it for years and don't currently have any napoleonic figures... ???

As for ACW - two dreary lines of infantry, one blue, one grey, blasting away at each other from behind fenceposts... cavalry not able to do anything but dismount and do the same, artillery that makes attacking suicidal... however, heaps of movies etc made about it...

WW2 yes lots of interesting tanks and tactics and stuff... fair enough that people play that too.

Yep....and millions of Yanks who are quite rightly interested and proud of their history puts some pressure on manufacturers to churn out the figs too!  :)

Yes, ACW is big in the US, the South is still fighting it in some ways ! :o  The appeal is obvious for Yanks !  However, many gamers have eclectic interests but find some eras more to their liking than others ... WWII and Sci-fi are mine ... for example.

At an old gaming club of mine there was a group of 6 guys who every two weeks played 25mm American War of Indepednace games.  They had a full campaign going with personality pofiles, fort construction, prisoner exchange programs, recruiting Indian tribes - the works!  It was great.

Of course, motivated people like that woul make ANY period game that much fun, but it was remarkable for its obscurity and how much stuff they had for it!

Uh huh. That's how the party line goes.  :p   However, I've heard that in certain states calling people "yanks" gets about the same response as calling airborne troopers marines. And having also witnessed several online discussions in certain forums & newsgroups I've started to believe it.  :;):

No doubts !   :;):  Our differences is our strength ... in some ways.  Guys from farms, the street, reservations, etc. as a Grunts ... we all did/do our jobs. And let there be no doubt, after being home for 15 years, some of the people I met I know I wasn't defending their freedom ... I would'nt show them the latrine ... :;):

I've always been fascinated by how the definition of "Yank"  changes depending on the speaker. To the rest of the world, A "Yank" is anyone from the US. To Southerners, "Yank" or more commonly Yankeee (often preceded by the word damn when a Southerner is being particularly derogatory), is, of course, someone from north of the Mason-Dixon Line. For Northerns, Yankee usually refers to people, like me, who live in New England. But, I suppose the same happens to others words used to categorize a group of people.

And what to you call a Cuban from Maimi?

I'm south of the Mason Dixon line so I guess I'm not a Yankee but I know I'm not a Southerner... :D

If I knew you well enough to know you wouldn't take offense, that would be a sure cue to unleash the racial epithets in full gale force... :D

But to the question of Yanks, yes, most Southern boys I know would take at least mild offense.  Believe it or not, I know people who will call non-southern people exhibiting rude behavior Yankee or Carpetbagger as a term of derision.

I didn't know "carpetbagger" was still used. That is DEFINITELY a term of derision.

This thread got me to thinking about what I have gamed, and what I would like to game at some point.

I have played:

Ancients - Roman type era (naval and land)
Medieval - Feudal & Hundred Years War eras
Napoleonic (naval and land)
Franco-Prussian War
Colonial
WW1 (naval, air and land)
WW2 (naval, air and land)
Modern (naval and land)
SciFi (naval, space and land)

I would be interested in playing

War of the Roses
English Civil War
Korea
Vietnam

I find uninteresting or only vaguely interesting:

Japanese Samurai/Feudal Period
ACW
