Right, it's an early-ish Alan Moore comic in its original form. The main charactes are Evey, an orphaned girl without a job, family etc., and V, a masked person who hides out in London and carries out what would be called terrorist acts - very closely and carfeully targetted, though - against a fascist postwar (a nuclear one) government which condones racism, prison camps with experimentation on humans, etc. V wears a Guy Fawkes mask, hat and a long coat, and Evey literally has to grow up and mature after she is rescued by V - it won't be easy.
Howzat?

Pretty much sums it up. Moore is an excellent writer and gives deeper story lines than most (and often throws in a few 'hidden' references and gags as well). This should be good, as it is more gothic than the standard comic fare.

It's usually a bad sign when the author distances himself from a movie.

We shall see. I have seen it go both ways. I remember when Anne Rice railed against Interview. Then when dhe saw it, she loved it and so did the fan base.

It all depends.

FILLER IS EXPENSIVE, or WHERE IS DACIA ANYWAY?

Hi all, this morning I ran an errand for the parent and stopped close to a local model supplies shop. I needed to buy some filler (Tamiya blue), and it was 3 times the usual price - er - ok, that's not fair, I spent over 3 times the usual price - I also came away with 48 Dacians.....

These plastic guys come in 1/72 scale and are produced by a company which for some reason calls itself 'Hat' (well, the 'a' has an umlaut thingy too..)
My box contained 3 sprues of one type and a fourth different one. These bearded guys come with spearsand shields or bows or swords and shields or long double-handed swords. They're a bit undernourished, it seems, but quite nice otherwise, and well defined (too bad about the much-loathed flash-on-flesh though..
It's oe of those impulse buys which I'll regret, because (1) they'll spend their lives waiting to be painted ?or (2) I'll paint them, but buy loads of friends. A lose-lose situation. :p

Oh - Dacia was in modern day Romania, and these guys were contemporary to the Romans.
EDIT Try here for a list.

I am actually building a Dacian force for Vis Bellica. They are indeed the ancient Romanians. They occupied the banks of the Danube and were a real thorn in the side of the Roman Empire. Trajan launched two campaigns against them (101AD and 105AD), the first ended in tithes from the Dacians which didnt last long, and the second made them a principality of the Roman Empire. They are known for carrying the Falx, a curved sword which could cut off a limb with a single swing and forced the Romans to adjust their armour to protect themselves. They carried a wolf-head standard that howled as the wind blew through it and believed that any warrior that was killed in battle when right to the foot of their God, making them extremely fanatically. When Trajan finally was finally successful in 106AD, he built Trajans Column, which I will have to visit one day.

You have stumbled on another passion of mine... sorry.

Heh, no way, this is interesting. I was surprised that this cheap set (48 1/72 scale miniatures for 5.50GBP) included the standard you mentioned and some falx-armed types - I was impressed. Problem is that the removal of mould lines and flash is a pain, as it's very soft plastic.  :(

ATTENTION CS! Any idea what colours these types wear, or any site which shows painted troops (I didn't PM this as others might be intersted; and if anyone wants them, I can photo the sprues).    :)

Hi!

One of my long term projects (and to think I actually do think about other things than epic!), I wanted to do a couple of Republic and Imperial era Roman armies with their most common opponents. I like Baccus 6mm for this. I picked up a couple of bags of their Romans and Barbarians some years ago. Very nice minis.

Hi vanvlak. The Dacians were fairly close to the Celts in their dress style. They favoured earthy colours, and the leaders wore taller hats. The Bastarnae are an annexed population, generally with longer tunics, and the Dacians also employed Sarmation cavalry, since they had little of their own.

The shields are tall and oval, and oten had bold designs in black and white. I have seen pictures of Dacians in dull greens and light blues, but I think that this is mostly limited to the leaders.

Essex Miniatures have a few pictures.
