I just made it up.
The scenario was a historical refight between Eldar and Imperial forces, so I figured there needed to be some background stuff to go with it.

Ebay is a curse and is to be avoided at all costs.
Repeat after me....

Well it looks like I am now collecting a new army for Epic. I am sure some of you are by now groaning at my butterfly like inability to choose an army and stick with it until finished. Bit it's OK- I am restricting myself to only buying off ebay.

Those that have read my previous contributions to ebay threads will know my inability to exercise any form of restraint and will probably be holding heads in hands.

But its OK- I have set myself the criteria that I can only bid minimum amounts on any auctions.

The good news is that should limit the financial damage caused to may wallet. The bad news is that means my army buying will be totally chaotic as I will have little control over what I eventually end up with. The even gooder news is that I can claim that this idea was blessed by Gork & Mork as being suitably Orky!!!  :D

Flicking through the Ork army list in Epic A rulebook it seems that this will fit in with Ork list fairly well. Any vehicle with guns and troop capacity can be called a battlewagon as even can Squiggoths. Anything with a bigger gun can be called a gunwagon. Anthing even bigger can be either a battlefortress or gunfortress. How cool is that!!

So flicking through my initial purchases I have 4 buggies, 4 scorchas, 2 bonecrunchas, 1 skullhamma, 1 magna cannon, 3 squig catapults and 3 flakwagons.

So it looks like I have minimum size small kult of speed, and am just some infantry short of my first small warband. Squig catapults will be put too one side until I have enough to make a small Snakebite contingent.

One question though - what would I classify the magna cannon as? Its the only one I can't see in collectors section of OOP models.

Cheers

James

Hi WI - in epic 40K and previous terms, it was an anti-aircraft vehicle - the magnet was used to bring the Imperial flyboys down to earth.... I guess using it as a Flakwagon (useful!) wouldn't hurt one bit.
Cheers,
John
PS - congrats on your new found Orky Cultishness. I love Moonz, but Sunz come a very close second. ?:D

Ah we have someone doing something I was planning on after I picked up  3 blisters of Skorcha's and 1 blister of Pulsa Rokkits for ?1 each :D

I'm planning on setting myself a total, and seeing what size force I can get within that total - could be an interesting force :)

-Just spotted Magna-Kannon in the list- down as Soopagun. Down know why I did n't spot it first time- maybe because seller mis-spelled it with a very un-orky c instead of k. Your suggestion of using it as some sort of flak weapon sounds cool though.

Dysartes
-Sounds like a cool idea. Normally I plan every army in infinite detail, working out full size- say 6,000 points for Epic or 4,000 points for BFG. And then go out and buy all the minatures in one go, only to spend the next few months staring with dread at the new mountain of lead/plastic/resin.

This way I keep the number of unpainted figures low as I will never be buying that many as invariably someone will bid more than minimum and thus outbid me. And unlike the more regimented IG/SM that I usually collect when I get any new figures I can usually just chuck it into existing warband/kult of speed because of the amazingly chaotic way that you choose the army. Already I am just a few infantry short of 2 legal formations.

All-
What colour scheme do you use for your Orks? Do you go for neutral scheme or one specific to one of the 6 main clanz?

I have been checking out Carl's excellent stuff on Dropship site. I quite like his mixture of reds, black and rusry metals. That appeals to me as a starting point. Maybe accentuate the reds on the Kult of Speed and conversely accentuate the blacks on Warband. How does that sound?

Cheers

James

Sounds ok - one scheme I plan to try is black undercoat with topical drybrush colours for all clans - yellow for moons, red for suns, with brighter-coloured Kult of speed, blue for blood axes etc (which means I havn't worked out the Goffs etc. yet! :p )

Hi!

I use the strict color for each clan as laid down in the old fluff. Of course under Netepic each clan has different abilities, so I dont know if its worth the extra trouble under Epic A.

I built a core army of Bad Moons, going with the yellow/black flames scheme and occasional blue and red details.  For this, I stuck with the Bad Moon concept - lots of nobz and shooty things and (per old school) wyrdboyz.

Then I built an Evil Sunz Speed Freeks army, but it has enough units to field it as a "regular" ork army.  Obviously, it's mostly red, with some black, yellow, and white.

I have assorted random-colored stuff and looted imperial stuff that I lump together as Deth Skullz.

And I've got the models for a Feral ork army that will be entirely Snakebites with tan and grey dominating.

In smaller games, I usually field all one clan's color scheme.  In larger games, I put formations from different clans in the mix but I wouldn't break it down farther than that, i.e. each formation should be a single clan imho.

Hi Primarch. How do you get your forces looking consistent? Or do you have a large enough selection that you can field a balanced army for any clan?

I would like to do Goths but won't have the patience to do checked. My next thought was then to do dull browns, but that would be too Snakebite-y.

So I want something I can mix elements of 2-3 different clans in so that they still look OK together. Thus my thoughts were say a Goth warband and Evil Sunz Kult of Speed. For the Goths mix in some red to offset the black. For the Evil Sunz add some black to tone down the red vehicles.

It would be a blatant copy of Carl Woodrow's Ork force on Dropship. But they say imitattion is the sincerest form of flattery. I am sure Carl won't mind.

Cheers

James

Hi!

When I painted my orks so long ago, I used the color schemes that where presented in the books. For example the Goffs are basically black and red, with some black and white checks on models big enough to sport them. So you can tell what units belong to whom just by looking at the main colors they have.

Also I constructed each clan back then on a target number. As many units (support, line and special cards) up to that number (it was 6000 points back then). This way each clan can be fielded as a whole army without mixing it with other clans and they all have enough basic units to make the clan played in varied manners.

So for an Epic A army for example if most people play 3000 points or so, make the target number 4 or 5k for each clan you favor and thus you could potentially play each clan on its own.

Under netepic each clan had specific units used by that clan so it made clans pretty distinctive. I would achieve this same effect under Epic A by making certain units unique to the clan you plan to build or include more or a particular unit to make that clan distinct. For example if you wanted to make a evil sunz clan include more bikes, wartracks and such or if you wanted a bad moonz clan include more heavy tanks and wierdboy towers.

Wahey!  The waagh gathers momentum.
More minimum bids on ebay snaffled me some bowelburnas and battlewagons with tower (not wierdboy battletower but some sort of gun tower- never seen them before), plus some old Skorchas.

Now definitely have enough models to do 2 legal formations- minimum sized Kult of Speed (only 1 warbike/buggie/skorcha shrt of big formation) and minimum sized Blitz Brigade (2 battlewagons + 2 bonecrunchas plus some bous Flakwagons).

I may need some more red paint to get me started. :)

Cheers

Well I am still waiting for some of my initial purchases (hopefully currently winging their way across Atlantic) but th first few bitz of my Waaagh have arrived.

So far I have the following:
2 stompas
approx 5 sprues infantry
2 wierdboy battletowers
5 battlewagons with gun tower
3 gutrippas
3 bowel burnas
3 mekboy dragsters with no bubble chucka
1 squig catapult
5 big gun chassis with no guns
1 pulsa rocket
3 flakwagons with no weapons
5 new battlewagons
6 buggies
10 scorchas

Bit of a random mixture and I need to build up my bitz box so that I can add weapons to those weaponless vehicles. No dreads or killer kans, which I wanted to do Goff mob with stompas. No warbikes or dethkoptas which I wanted for the near obligatory cult of speed.

Where to start......

I reckon a 12 strong Kult of Speed with a 50-50 mix of buggies and scorchas (I can add some warbikes or wartraks to take it up to the 16 needed for big Kult of Speed later).

Plus normal sized warband with 4 battlewagons, couple of gunwagons and some more scorchas (again will be reinforced later up to big warband with some flakwagons and oddboy zzap gun).

Right where's me soopaglue?

Cheers

James

Right- konverted the weapon-less flak wagons into battlewagons by simple expedient of milliput to fill in the hole in which flak gun mount fits in- mix and match with some of the new battlewagons for variety. Dug out the warmaster based ready for applying basing texture later in week.

Tried to glue togther some of new buggies- got more glue on hands and guns would n't stick- grrr. Switch to infantry whilst light is still good.

Start small with just 1 sprue. Put the stormboyz and Kommandos to 1 side for future formations. Really like poses and variety of gretchin models- so far my favourite- very characterful. By using a couple of the shoota boyz I can put together 6 boyz stands from single sprue- enough for my first normal sized warband.

Then realised there were only 5 Nobz figures per sprue. Thats enough for only 1 stand and I need 2 stands for normal sized warband. I know I can take some from next sprue, but sooner or later I am going to be short of nobz.  :(

Have quick glance at both Dropship and Warmaster Nice's Epic Lounge to check I am not overdoing nobz per sprue- no they both use 5 Nobz per stand too.

Darn!!

What about everyone else? What do you use for your Ork Nobz?

Cheers

James
