In response to Xavis post on his Marine background, I have the notes of a Chapter that I was working on. This is written in my own form of notes, which makes perfect sense to me. Let me know what you think. They will most likely be the Chapter if I ever played 40K.
Name: Angels of Wrath
Badge: Silhouette of hunting falcon in dive, in company colour
Armour: Primary ? Grey Secondary ? Dark Green ? Left shoulder plate (Sergeants and higher rank have both shoulder plates in dark green) and relief
Notes:
The Angels of Wrath are a Salamanders successor Chapter. Few Imperial records are kept of this Chapter as it was presumed lost ? a failed experiment which disappeared. The Chapter returned after an extended time and it is said that they travelled among many alien races and even within the Eye of Terror itself. There is considerable speculation as to what wonders exist on the Angels of Wrath Spacecraft home, but none have ever seen for themselves, and the Angels are not telling.
This travelling period has made the Angles of Wrath relatively open to other races and ideas. They have been known to ignore Eldar who are not a cause for battle, and while they would not ally with another race or force they have been known to take potential allies force distribution into their battle plan and even to protect those with a similar goal to their own.
The Chapters base is a large space craft, known as the Absolution. They travel and recruit from various worlds. The type of world produces a distinct recruit with strengths and weaknesses. The world type dictates which company the recruit is drafted into. Each company is a fully self-contained force with most troop types in each one. But, since each company has recruits from a specific world, it specialises in a specific task and has a higher percentage of certain troop types and a lower percentage of others. All have Dreadnoughts, Terminators, Medics, etc
Watchers are sent 10 ? 20 years ahead of the home craft. They visit planets and scout for regions and notable individuals for recruiting. As part of their task, they may have to infiltrate organisations, assassinate key individuals to allow others to rise or even start civil outbreaks or wars to observe individuals who respond to the climate. These Watchers are sent ahead where they wait for the Chapter Craft to catch them up. They then return to the Absolution, where they spend a few years as part of the Chapter Masters Company, before again being sent forward.
[Key: Number ? Name ? Company Badge ? Colour ? Recruiting World Type ? Battlefield Role ? Notes (More ? Less)]

1 Archangels Chapter Badge White Recruited from other companies Command Company
A small structure, of only the Force commander, his aides (tactical advisors), bodyguards (elite warriors) and transports as well as any Watchers which are currently not planet-side. This group may also include Dreadnoughts.
2 Soul Piercers - - Hive World Street Fighting
This company is equipped for fighting in enclosed spaces, and so includes a greater number of armoured and armed infantry units. They excel at street fighting and space boarding actions.
3 Arctic Tigers Blue/White with Black Tiger Stripes Light Blue Ice World Drop Company
The Ice Worlds provide a unique battlefield where mobility is limited and dangerous, and any terrain or cover is extremely valuable. This makes warriors from these worlds ideal drop troops, who can be deployed directly in the heart of the enemy and form a centre point which is reinforced. The Arctic Tigers are able to drop into a position, dig themselves in and hold out against greater numbers of enemies.
4 Earth Shakers - - Underground Caverns Siege Warfare
The hostile environment of some worlds drives inhabitants underground. These conditions require great stubbornness, with the inhabitants using huge equipment to construct their underground homes, and they are used to spending their entire lives in tunnels and trenches. This makes them ideal Siege soldiers, where similar conditions and huge destructive vehicles are essential.
5 Sea Dragons - Dark Blue Aqua World Assault Company
On worlds made of mostly water, land is sacred and fought over fiercely. Warriors from these worlds become adept and storming enemy fortresses and boats, and placing charges to sink or cripple the enemies floating strongholds.
6 Warhawks - - Ash/Poisonous Wastes Heavy Weapons
In the most hostile environments, any exposure to the elements is fatal, and so warriors from these worlds use a large number of heavy weapons, allowing them to crack open the enemies protection and force them to flee quickly. The fact that many of these worlds are also blasted smooth and devoid of cover or natural protection makes heavy weaponry even more valuable.
7 Desert Scorpions - Dark Sand Yellow Desert World Bikes and Fast Attack
This company is recruited from desert worlds, where the environment is harsh and sandstorms obscure vision. The warriors are adept at lightening raids. Where once they would ride mounts and use sandstorms as cover, now they use fast moving bikes and Land Speeders and the cover of night of support fire. The company is expert at riding fast attack vehicles.
8 Poisoned Devils - Green Death World Jungle
The inhabitants of Death Worlds are able to navigate and survive in jungles and tropical climates with an almost unnatural ability. This company uses a large number of flamers and melta weapons to scorch away enemies cover and set alight the area to drive opposition away.
9 Iron Hammers - - Factory World Vehicles and Equipment
Factory worlds are full of people who have been around equipment and technology for their entire existence and have an uncanny ability to use and understand even the most obscure of exotic of alien weapon. This company manufactures a large number of vehicles and equipment, and possess some of the more unusual wargear in the Chapter. They have less assault troops and light vehicles.
10 Blood Eagles Eagle talon with a blood drop Red Barbarian Worlds Berzerker
This company is recruited from barbarian worlds, where technology is rare and warriors are expected to be extremely fierce. It contains more assault troops and berzerker troops, but significantly less heavy weapons.
11 Preying Mantis Company - - Agricultural Worlds Tracking and Scouting
Warriors from agricultural worlds become expert trackers, snipers and saboteurs, able to locate their cattle and track almost anything. They are also experienced with fine shooting and hunting, skills which are very useful to a commander.
