I'm sure it is...but where do you find these guys? ?
Good one dafrca! | Good question. As we are all family here, I will share.
The main source is letting people at the local level know you would be interested in buying/owning Epic stuff. I have let the locals know and some of them have told friends. I have traded other stuff for Epic, bought Epic, and in a couple of cases had Epic handed to me. I had a few people ask me to sell off their stuff on ebay and my fee is I get to pick some to keep.
Next, I have watched Bartertown for people who are selling off whole collections or at least larger chunks. Sometimes that means paying a larger sum up front, but you are buying penny on the dollar. I just bought the Imperial Guard Army for less then the Reaver and one Company would have cost me on GWs Mail Order.
Last place is on ebay. Again, the small stuff can go too high, but the collections often sell for low per unit costs because the total goes outside the budget of most gamers. Now here is my trick, I will admit it has worked most of the time. Once or twice I have had to sell more then I thought, but here is the trick:
I often realize I will need to sell off some to finance the rest so I look at the collection or large lot and figure what it might sell for as ?small? lots. I calculate the smaller lots as full units or playable upgrades etc. Six stands of Marines and three Rhinos, or 10 Leman Russ Tanks, etc. I then look at what is left and see if it still looks good to me. Bout three of my four Reavers this way.
I bought one 40k scale collection for $250. I then put up about 12 or so ebay auctions with one Rhino and 10 Marines, or three bikes (for example). I sold about half of the collection for a net (after ebay fees and paypal fees) of about $30. I ended up with 2 Razerbacks, 10 Metal Termies, and 1 Attack Bike.
Yes, I had to pay out $250 first, and I had to move on the ebay auctions right away to minimize the impact of the $250 outlay on my budget, but it was worth it. I received for my time, a lot of Marine stuff for my own collection.
Next, a bit of advice, watch for odd mixes. Someone puts up 2 Leman Russ, 4 Rhinos, and 2 Ork Battlewagons, the total will sometimes stay low. No one wants to deal with the odd, non-formation sized lots.
But the fact is, I have bought five such auctions from the same seller for .99 each and ended up with a full EA Russ company and handed my Ork friend a handful of battlewagons, and still ended up with a handful of other junk for trade/bitz etc. for $5 plus $4.85 shipment.
Last, do not be afraid of getting junk to get what you want. I saw one auction that had 20 plastic Rhinos and one THawk. Starting bid? $1. Number of bids? None. Time left? 1 hour. I bought it.
I am sure that most people just kept saying, ?but I do not want 20 more Rhinos?. Fine, I tossed them in a box and over the last year I have handed a few to each person who has shown an interest and told them to buy a sprue of Marines to go with it. Cost me nothing and got people excited. Oh and I bought a THawk for $1.
OK, enough for now. I am rambling on.
