Umm, naive Q here, but how hard is it to learn the bass? Bearing in mind I have no rhythm as Doug can vouch from my 'dancing'.

I think it's not hard, it just takes time. My dad got one around Christmas and he's still on chapter one in the book he got...

So the question is do you have the patience to learn?

Ah ha. Another bass player in the making. I have been playing the bass guitar for about six years now, although I have not had the time to pick it up recently.

Like anything, it is fairly easy to get a feel for the instrument, but it takes a while to master, in some ways longer than the guitar.

If you just want to stand at the back of a band, then a cheap bass guitar and the occasional root note will get you there, and take about four weeks to master.

If you want to slap, pop, solo and play harmonics, it will take a lot longer. Still, it is a fantastic, and much under-rated instrument.

The biggest problem is getting the enthusiasm up to practise. Can you hum any three bass lines without the rest of the music present?

I've heard plenty of hummable bass lines in Stanley Clarke's music, and in the Dog Faced Hermans.
If you have no rhythm, it could be pretty hard to play any instrument!

Second hand, you can get a semi-decent one for under ?100, an Aria or Squire or similar. You can even get a new one for around ?150, just something to learn on.

If you want any buying advice, just let me know.
