Hiya guys we had a series of events in our game last night that left us both speechless so I just wanted to kind of document it somewhere and ask if anyone else has had similar débâcles?

My groundpounding Marines took on Steel Legion. His BTS Reg HQ was sat on Overwatch on his base edge with a barebones infantry company bubbling them against my 'Bus Terminators from some woods to their front.

I'd been aggressive with my garrisoned Scouts and Land Speeders and managed to ZOC the infantry before they could go onto Overwatch with the Scouts with Speeders in support (foolishly intermingled).

The infantry then assaulted my Scouts and Speeders, beating them convincingly without suffering any casualties. A minor spanner in my plan but nothing insurmountable. I then moved into the woods with 2 tactical formations (one with captain) and my other Scouts.

New plan was to assault the infantry with the Captained Tacticals and Scouts, clear them away and move into FF range of the Reg HQ with the consolidate. Then the second tactical would assault the HQ hopefully triggering his OW ready for my Terminators to finish the job.

Unfortunately the guard stood tall and beat off the Marines for very few casualties. The Marines and Scouts died in droves, the supporting Tacticals managed nothing and the while thing descended into a farce.

I could only imagine my Sup Com's thoughts sending unit after unit into those dark woods only for battered survivors to emerge fleeing with strange stories....

So 250 points of guard beat off 350 points the first time and 500 points next turn unbroken. The stuff of legends!

Anyone got any similar war stories?

How did the Reg HQ assault your intermixed Scouts/Speeders and then still go on overwatch? Was this over two turns? (wasn't clear)

Regardless that's a battle that I'm sure netting those guard extra rations that night!

Warmaster related story.

My Empire army facing Dark Elves. I had a lone unit of Empire Crossbows out on the flank (sole remainder of
a brigade). They were charged by a unit of Dark Elf Warriors and were expected to die to a man. To my great surprise, they beat the Elves w/o loss (dark muttering from the other player). The next turn, I tried to pull them out. They blundered and had to charge another unit of Dark Elf warriors, which they proceeded to slaughter (cue even more muttering from the opponent).

I was so amazed, I was inspired to write a short piece, celebrating their achievements and taking the mick out of the other player...

The following week, two units of dreaded Empire bowmen stood in line expecting annihilation - they were about to be charged by Chaos Knights.... Again, the mighty bowmen were victorious - the Knights bounced off, much to the annoyance of the opponent... Tee hee.

That is what you'll remember for years to come and this is why I wargame!!! GAME ON!!!!

WFB 3rd ed - in the first aggressive action of the game, some Skavenslaves get shot and flee. The unit next to them fails it's Cool test and also flees. Repeat down the entire Skaven line. We decided to just put the units back and start again.

40k 2nd ed - a Leman Russ tank gets shot. The turret blows off. And lands on the second Leman Russ. And blows the turret off that one. Which (you've guessed it already) lands on a third Leman Russ.

Space Hulk 1st ed - a lone Terminator on Overwatch is five squares down the corridor from a room full of blips. Thirteen dead Genestealers and the Terminator hasn't jammed on a double, across thirty shots...

Didn't happen to me but my fave WTF?! moment involved EUK AMTL vs EUK nids, a formation of 8 robots in cover engage a nearby genestealer formation in FF, 4 robots fail the difficult terrain test going in, the remaining robots score 0 hits in the combat and promptly lose the rolloff by 3, the lone surviving robot falls back into cover and promptly fails his difficult terrain test....

We had a cracker the other week - oddest game ever where Mark W's bezerker co having prepped assaults my thousand sons company. He's starting 4 up, and loses the whole unit. My undamaged thousand sons co then activates, summons 5 daemons, assaults a unit of light AA guns (which has a bm) and loses (I had 1 stand left after combat res). I had 26 4+ firefight attacks and 5 units with RA to take hits. He had 6 5+ attacks killed 3/4 TK sons.

Mark then failed 2/3 of his activations on a single turn. Not to be outdone I put 8 3+, 14 4+ (with 3 macros) shots into a bezerker co a killed a rhino

I had a really funny situation a few weeks ago. My DE list was meeting a Biel-Tan list with a warlock titan. My wych cult air assaulted the titan with my Incubi in support. The inital attacks didn't go as planned but i managed to do a crit. The Incubi was only i FF range and had to roll 6:es to hit so i thought the combat was lost. Imagine my (and my opponents surprise when i roll 5 sixes on 6 dice! And then he fails to save four of them and the titan is destroyed!

Very weird moment indeed!

In 2nd Ed 40k I had a Commissar that rolled hatred on the Tyranid attack table (or whatever it was called) every single game (at least 10 games..).

In one of my first games of 3rd ed 40k I was playing another Tyranid player who had a skirmish line of spore mines spread out in front of and intermingled with his whole army. When they die they explode so an opening Battlecannon shot and amusing chain reaction later later all he had left was a nearly dead Hive Tyrant and a Biovore.

I forget the edition (maybe 5th?), but in one 40k game my Tau opponent assaulted my Genestealers with his gun drones, hoping to hold them up for a turn. The gun drones won the combat and wiped out the Genestealers, taking maybe 1 or 2 casualties in return.

In one Fantasy game my Orcs were attacking a solid line of Dwarfs- shooting took out all but one unit of Orcs, which were promptly charged in both the front and flanks (damned animosity). The Orc unit won the combat, all 3 Dwarf units broke and ran, and the Orcs ran down the Dwarf General and Battle Standard.

There have been plenty of other WTF moments too in our games…

Like having 12 to 14 critical confirmed in a game, yep Knights game…12 to 14 DC been done by critical..

Then in another game (Big game) …ATML then rolls four critical, on the critical chart at the end of turn 4, they rolled 4 ones, so they lost the Imperator (bts)(1300 points) Warlord(1025) and warlord(900 points)

In another, we had the Imperator titan do a FF with formation infantry (I think might have been rangers) ...I though yep that formation gone, 14 dice 3+ plus, so should be a few hits….He manage to roll 1 hit (there was at least 7 1’s rolled) and I manage to save it….He wins the combat by 1, after rolling double 1’s. if I remember correctly he quickly change the dice after that…It was bloody funny since we could not believe he only got one hit and then have me save it..
