Quote (iblisdrax @ 07 2004 April,21:51) | Okay, what if an infantry unit with no ranged weapons (small arms only), goes into overwatch? ?How do you handle it when this detachment gets assaulted? ?Do they get a FF Overwatch attack before the enemy gets into base to base? ?Or what? ?I can't find anything in the rules on this.
my 2 cents,
iblisdrax |
Infantry units on overwatch get a 5+ cover save. This helps everyone, even units with no ranged weapon attacks.
I like the idea of giving overwatching units First Strike.

Yes, that's the way it was in SM1, Infantry on First Fire orders, got a cover bonus ... Infantry lying down prone and/or in a hasty defensive posture under cover/concealment are harder to see, hence harder to hit ... rules like this adds a little "realism" to the game.

Where is that 5+ save for overwatch at in the rules? Because I've been looking in my rulebook and I can't find it. If it is in there somebody give me a section or page number and I'll slap myself upside the head again.

There is a mention of it (5+ save) in the q/a section under, COVER SAVES!! It also mentions infantry hiding 'as if in ambush' in this section. So I would agree that overwatch should give some bonus. Have faith, kill Orks!

Okay, I found it. It is on page 18, section 1.8.4 Special Rule Terrain Effects. Infantry in open ground get a 5+ cover save when on Overwatch. Interestingly, this could lead to different tactics for IG troops. Move them up and then go into overwatch just for the save. Not good for any kind of assault, but usefull as a blocking force for your artillery.

But, without cover, that is exactly what you get with an IG infantry company...lots of dead bodies.
Btw, I was simply exploring a tactic to protect your precious, expensive artillery company in a 3000-5000 point game. An infantry company on overwatch, with a RR formation and or a sentinel formation would do the trick very well, against most threats against your artillery. (Again, assuming no cover, of course.)

Well if you have not figured it out, yet ... I always try to use cover and concealment !

But what if you don't have any availible cover? Without cover, going into overwatch is an interesting option.

Hi!
The cover in open ground is suppose to represent infantry laying prone, using nooks and crannies in the terrain that are not apparent on a level gaming tabletop.

Well, back to the original thought of this post, if you give an infantry unit with no ranged weapons an additional First Strike attack, combined with the 5+save if they are in the open (course, if they are under cover, they more than likely have a save anyways) may very well prove to be too powerfull a rule. This one will have to be playtested, probably in the next Epic game we play.

Well let us know how it turns out I/drax. But we will continue to use infantry on Fire Fire orders get cover mod, as in SM1. For the reason Primarch and I stated earlier ...

Hi!
I always that that the SM1 rules worked best in that regard. I used a modification of that for heresy as well.
