Hey everyone!

Trying to get into the hobby again, I was last active several years ago but want to kind of start again... I just wonder a little what's the best way to do that.

I have a bunch of painted 'Nids and Black Templars, which I guess could both be an army of some kind or would be if I painted a little more. I have a bunch of unpainted Eldar and Necrons, which I want to paint. I have the printed E:A rulebook and the Swordwind expansion. In order to catch up with everything I started looking around on the net, but I basically have some questions which I thought I might just as here.

  • I see that E:A is now also NetEA, NetArmageddon, Net Epic:Armageddon or whatever you call it. I thought that was great, but I would have assumed that there's some kind of github repo where development is actually taking place or something. There isn't, though. How is development actually done?
  • I'd like to have small-ish (maybe 1k) lists for my armies in order to have be able to just play a game with a friend or two. There's a thread that started collecting beginner's list that has a messed up formatting. Is there a collection of those lists somewhere? Would it be reasonable to start one?
  • Any Germans here? From the North, preferably?
  • What's the "general state" of Epic? Is it still as active? Threads seem to be rather old with not much activity :-/
  • I remember reading something about GW planning to re-release Epic, then no longer planning to, then some 8mm Epic being in the works... what's the state there?

Hello and Welcome!

The different versions you mention are confusing at first. One of the other guys will probably explain that easier than I will. Basically, the Forum thread your in is the E:A book you have.

If your looking for 1K games, and to introduce new players google "minigeddon" rules. Its a "lite" version of what you have and makes for fast, easier games to assist in learning the basics

If your looking for players try http://miniwars.co.uk/ you can enter your address to find the closest players to you.

Its still very much alive and active. The tournament scene is good, and they develop lists all the time. These development lists can be found at the bottom of the "home" thread split into the various forces.

New epic thread here viewtopic.php?f=43&t=31259

Howdy do!

lots to reply with so i'll attempt to balance detail and succinctness:

EA is the game. Everyone playing 4th edition is playing EA. NetEA is a group that produces additional supplements and trounament ready lists and maintains an FAQ integrated version of the original rulebook content. It is one of man groups that continue to produce content for EA (other big ones are the EpickUK group and the EpicAU group). You can get to everything that the NetEA group has at the website http://www.net-armageddon.org/

basically fee free to mix and match from wherever as they all work well together and the most important rule is to have fun. Don't get too caught up with the idea of "approved" lists. Do what works for you + Don't be a D!ck and you'll be in great shape :)

That's not really a system conducive to list play reporting. It is used to maintain the completed content used to generate Tournement Pack however.

So in short the process is roughly:
Each list has one or more people responsible for testing and designing the list (we call this a listAC or subAC for Army Champion). They take feedback, help provide guidance to the community looking for things to test involving both theme, playability, and gamey/unintentional power combos, etc. Each list has a single thread in the NetEA development section here clearly labled. It will be placed into the appropriate area based on faction (GUard, Marines, Chaos, etc). Some of these faction sections have an index thread stickied to sort out who and what is going on (see this example here for marines for what I mean). The ultimate goal it to produce a thematic list that is balanced for general tournament play using the GT Scenario from the EA rule book. The points target is to make them usable from 2k-5k with 3k being the "sweet spot". Once the list settles down from wild speculation and changes (what we call Experimental) a faction AC (they're responsible for all the lists for a faction, not just one) can choose in consultation with the listAC to classify it as Developmental. Basically that's an indicator to the community that this list structure and concepts are generally fixed and working and we're more in a matter of validating her. Once they feel it's right, they need to collect 18 details battle reports with the proposed final version of the list from at least 3 separate groups. This data is used by the Rules Committee to confirm that we've done our job in making sure we've not gone off the rockers. If good, it is "Approved" and it goes into the TP.

The approach is used to organically grow and use a "genetic" system for development. Basically if people want xyz, they'll help develop it. If it's too niche or the approach is "wrong" or disliked, it goes nowhere (by design).

Basically the best thing to do is jump in somewhere that interests you and get up to speed with the current discussion and play away!

More tournaments now than ever before. The UK and AU especially seem active.

Depends on the thread. A hobby thread is only going to be active hen that person produces something. A list development thread is as active as the community is interested.

The TP is maintained in GitHub:

https://github.com/dsusco/tp.net-armageddon.org

The development itself is all within the forums.

Wow, thanks for the long answers!

Okay, found it... I'm just wondering why I couldn't just pick a 1000 pts army with basic rules only instead. Will read some more.

Okay, so I guess my major mistake was that I didn't see the sticky posts for what they were. If you just enter a forum and there's a lot of threads that are extremely old, it just kind of looks inactive. For epic, nearly the whole first page is just sticky posts, which just gave me a wrong impression.

I see, thanks for the info. I'll head over to the forums that focus on development then.

I may head over there for a game... as a "returning player" that didn't touch the game for years I'll need to read the rules first - and you'd be stuck with a novice player.
