What is up people? In case anyone hasn't noticed the lack of arguing in many of the gaming forums, I kind of dipped off the radar screen. I had a feeling that the gaming bug in me might be going away for awhile now, and it looks like it was for real.

Last summer my girlfriend and I of four years broke up and there has no doubt been a huge change in my life since then. I wasn't too happy about it, but what the hell. Why waste anymore time with someone who obviously isn't THE one?

Anyway, about six years ago I had realized I just wasn't playing games anymore and sold most of it. I kept my most of my Epic stuff, but I even got rid of some of that stuff too. Yeah, I know, heretic.

Anyway, I guess around a year or so into my relationship with my ex, I had graduated from college and settled into adult life and one of my friends mentioned he was interested in 40k after seeing all the LOTR stuff coming out. So we got into it and I went way overboard buying back all the stuff I had sold previously and then some. I picked up unopened copies of all the Epic games, Man O' War, 40k, Necromunda, WFB, Warhammer Quest and so forth of Ebay (remember, these are already games I used to have ??? ) and the many many gaming stores I called around the country. It wasn't just gaming stuff, but also lots of Japanimation models from the series found on my website (all which have been oop for many years). I mean, I was on a shopping spree and the internet made everything accessible. That is how I get into something though, I want it all.

I actually have three groups of friends and only one of them was interested in the games. We as much as we could but I think I was just reliving the old days reading all the books on my own. I am a collector like many of you and I think that was the real thrill. Anyway, between a girlfriend, work, and not going out as much I set plenty of time aside for all that stuff. I actually enjoyed it. I built my website around it all.

Well, now most of the time I am single and I prefer to be out partying and socializing way too much. In some aspects the gaming hobby is dirt cheap compared to going out all the time. And geez, the chics in Tampa love Red Bull and Grey Goose. That's a freakin $12 drink! #%@*! Obviously I want to be where the hotties are, so I can't complain too much. There are a lot of hotties in Florida.

I also neglected many of my friends staying inside all the time, something which they have forgiven me for and a mistake I will never make again. My friends would rather have poker night, which I prefer now too. After that, I'd rather play online games.

To be honest something in me changed. I don't know what. My friends say I enjoyed the gaming stuff because it was my time during the relationship, and now I don't really have a need for that. Now I guess I am looking for something and it is not in my apartment. LOL.

I really can't believe how introverted gaming made me. I like to build Japanese robot and spaceship models too, and that is very solitary work. You spend far more time building gaming armies than you do playing, not that that is bad, but I just resent spending too much time over my desk. I am in IT too, so I spend much of my work day looking at a PC, so between all that I can see how I became anti-social. Not good.

Anyway, so I have decided to box up most of my stuff and put it away. I am not selling too much yet just incase I want it back in 6 years. I absolutely love my Epic and Man O' War stuff, so I will always keep those in easy reach, but the others, like WFB, while I like them I just can't believe I almost spent more money on it all. Just to sit there. Thank god.

Has anyone been in similar shoes? Maybe I am growing out of it, I don't know. I know I DON'T want to set time aside for it. Maybe you married guys can relate?

The best part is, I have almost ZERO interest in my website anymore, nor much of what is on it. Yet people keep sending me stuff to post. I knocked my laptop off my desk and broke it too, so I may have lost everything. . .

I have no idea what is going on in the playtesting forum. I hate that place now.

Hi. I dont think that it is unusual for anyone to experience dips and highs in anything, particularly wargaming which tends to inspire obsession on people. My highs and lows are generally less extreme, and when I would rather do something else then I do. I must admit that while my work eats up a load of my spare time, perhaps not having as much as I want actually keeps the interest going.

I wouldnt be surprised if you find a rekindled interest in the whole thing in a year or so. When major lifestyle changes occur, it really shakes up how you spend your time, and how you evaluate your passtimes and hobbies. You have to.

The important thing is that you enjoy what you do. I really enjoy certain things now, and maybe next year this will change. Who knows. There are times when the prospect of updating the web site becomes a chore (right now I am finding it difficult to get time for web updates, but that seems to be coming to an end at the moment), but there are somethings that I am determined not to let slip too much, as I know that I will want to keep it going. In the end, the things that I look back on and that have really mattered to me have been the ones that have taken time and which I have had to keep going.

Anyway, good luck with everything. When my life circumstances change I try to use the event to look at what really matters and is important to me, and where I really want to be in a couple of years. It helps to stay focussed, which I need to keep doing.

All the best.

You are right that this hobby can take up far too much time if you get too involved.  Which is why I try to include as many different things that i enjoy as I can.  That way I don't get fed up with any of the aspects of GW.

When I'm short of cash, the hobby keeps me occupied.  That way I don't think too much about all the fun I could be having down town of an evening.

When its hot, then my motorbike takes preferance, and again the hobby gets pushed aside.  However, as I live in England, there aren't too many days like that.  So I still get some days to fit it in.  And then after all the nagging from the missus to do DIY around the house, its sometimes good to have some time alone from her.

Basically, if you really want to keep it up, you'll fit it in somewhere. Even if it is another 6 years down the line.

Gandalf,

I'm glad to hear that you're back.

We all need a rabblerouser or two although it sounds like you might have changed your ways.

I don't blame you about the E-A Playtest forums although you might be surprised to find that some of the old faces have changed roles or moved on.

I find that gaming makes me more extroverted than introverted. It forces me to find opponents and het out of the house if I want to play. I also find that I'm more productive and happy when building and painting with a friend as well.

Again, welcome back! :)

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

As a married man, father of 3 (all girls :p ), and a Postal employee who works 55+ hours a week (midnight shift, even!), I struggle to find time to do anything with my gaming stuff.  A hour here , a hour there, a game once or twice a month (if I'm lucky!) is pretty much all I get, between family, work, and playing on my computer.  I finally got around to building my gaming table, and someday will have pics of my army on it to show off(reminder to self: get new digital camera  )  So, I guess all I can say is to let it sit for a while, then pick it back up slowly.  Moderation is the key, to all things in life.  And that is all the philosophy from me for today. :D

my 2cents,

Hi!

I find that all gamers, as people, go through a sort of "evolution". I remember when I would by everything I laid my eyes on just to hardly play more than one game.

As time went by, I learned to stick with one or two things that I really liked and ignore the rest. I also am less interested in "crusading" getting people interested in my hobby. Now, I just like playing with one or two people that mesh well with my personality and gaming is a more private personal affair.

The only constant is change.....

hi Gandalf,
with me it's my postgrad work that's eaten a lot of gaming/modelling time - I only play tournament games, currently, because it's more time-economic to play 4 games in one tournament day than play one every few months... a sad state of affairs, granted to get me nowhere near first in a tourney (that I made 6th in WH40K is one of the major unsolved mysteries in Maltese wargaming history).
My marriage actually saw the start of wargaming - I'd been longing to get into it for years, then bought my first copy of White Dwarf during our honeymoon! The wife says our marriage isn't legal, because I hadn't told her about my relationship with 'orks' (our generic term for WH models) before our wedding!!  :p
I've had ups and downs with buying, painting, playing and modelling, but now I'm settling gracefully (as graceful as a gargant, as they say...) into wargaming old age (at 36+), buying less stuff and trying to complete armies rather than odds and ends, something I don't always manage. Onre reason why I buy less models is bec. my wife buys a good deal of stuff for me!   :D
But to get back to the point, the hobby has its crests and troughs, with, for example, the social aspect of the game losing out at times (esp without opposite sex gamers when you're single!), the solitary aspect becoming oppressive at others. I only sold very few models (some WH40K stuff and a Leviathan I sorely miss) very early in my 'career', and refuse to do so again. My advice is to keep the stuff for a rainy day, it can only be more expensive to buy back. I still get out my Lego sets when the fancy takes me...

As one grows older, your priorities change.  Especially, younger males.  Bio-chemical reactions to females and male bonding rituals take precedent over playing with Toys ... However, at 47 years old, I find no time for gaming, some time for collecting Epic and a little time for going to my favorite local Brew Haus and flirting with females half my age or younger !  Also for years I modeled and collected WWII-Modern AFVs, infantry etc.  Now I out grew that and I am in the process of selling the 100s of those models, I had stored away.  Some of the $$$ will go to E:A, some will go to my investments.  As we grow we evolve ... hopefully ! :;):

Hi!

I think its best described as the love of gaming going from "passion" to "just something fun to do".

Life has many other things that require attention, especially work, without which there would be no money to buy epic stuff!  :D

Be careful with the drugs this week, then. cheap and sad joke, I know, but I couldn't resist!  :p

In any case we are going out of the thematic of the post (once again, bleh). My 2 cents worth is that I started collecting WHFB a few years ago when the 4th edition of the game was released. I was young and had loads of free time so I played quite a bit with friends. Then adfter a while started to get *really* interested in females of our own species so I more or less displaced my gaming sessions to a second term. Later I kept interested in females and entered university. Gaming sessions down the sink: maybe 2-3 games per year in the summer. After that (last year of uni and first MA year) I reconnected with the hobby. How? I got interested in BFG and found a group of enthusiastic players of BFG _and_ WHFB. The BFG players are right here, in the UK at the university of essex wheere I am studying, so I could reconnect with regular gamins sessions (several times per month). Needless to say I keep interested in females of our own species but I left other activities instead.

In general: you evolve as others have said, and hopefully IMPROVE as well during the process, but you should not fear the downside of losing interest from time to time. It happened to me several times during all those years and I have always recovered. I have bought and sold a lot of styfff (including my wonderful collection of 1200 (one thousand and 2 hundred, yup) spearelves and my high elf 800 archers as well as most of my other armies that are not HE. I try to keep my HE army "complete" (all 0-1 units at 25 minature strength including command and 60 miniatures of the no 0-1 sinfantry as well as 40 minis of the cavalry miniatures) and has been ages since I bought stuff for them. It keeps the size of the storage space within certain limits (one third of the space under my bed) and leaves my with a hefty reserve of models (I could easily field 3 competent armies at once with those). Other small contingents are *very* carefully planned and playtested BEFORE I buy any models. Only 2 of them for WHFB so far: dark elves and stunties; 1500 points of each and the list is fixed, meaning I will NO change them. Again, keeps storage within limits and has the advantage of knowing exactly what my army list is going to do on the battlefield.

If I lose interest for a while is not a problem for the aforementioned reasons since I can deal with what I have, but I also have a hiuge and diverse reserve of models and armies for the case of me regaining the interest in the game. I would recommend a similar approach even if this doesn't work for everyone.

Obviously I have my quirks like my obsession of collecting dragon and great eagle minis (14 dragons, 4 griffons and 9 eagles so far, all different). But again, they simply hold some space in ONE shelf.

And over all, remember to be loyal to whatever power you serve (in my case, sex and love, not necessarily in that order) and to HAVE FUN!! in whatever way of life you have engaged :D

*rant mode:OFF*

health and sixes,

Xavi
