I have no rockets this time, you're safe!

Also, checked train times and I will probably be cutting it fine for the first game at 10. Shouldn't be late for the start, but might be getting there around 9.55 or something...

Apologies in advance for some slapdash painting on my part. I may have been too ambitious about how much I could do with the busiest work week of the year and my brother's stag do last weekend. :-)

I've just been daubing some dwarf bronze onto a strike cruiser … no time for highlights here :spin

didn't take many pictures, but i think steve got shots of the armies.

Here's what i have:

Duncan's skitarii were probably my favourite of the event, great use of DiD conveyors

Kyuss' fists looking strong as always

Dave trying to generate additional thunderhawks game 1 (yes, it was played in this position)

Big thank you for running! I have some photos of my own which I'll upload tomorrow...ish.

Also thanks to my three opponents, I'll do a bit more battlereportey on them later but needless to say, activation advantage ftw. Recycling the Lord's Kabal worked great too.

Oh, I built the list to kind of spam the Vessels of Pain. Could people who faced them please stick a comment up about your thoughts on them after facing them down?

My feelings as the guy who used them is that they're good. But 4 is too many.

The list for those who forgot/didn't see it.

Thanks to the folks at the venue, Darren and Steve for organising and running, Steve for driving, and to Duncan, Tom and Richard for three excellent games!

Game 1 - Duncan (Skitarii)

Duncan had a crawler heavy list with a reaver BTS, which all came steaming towards me early on, my terminators had a field day, mangling the majoris before it could move, and I was able to out-activate him throughout and largely pick him apart, my scouts won the day by grabbing t&h and blocking off his last minorus unit scrambling back to his blitz, 2-0 to me

Game 2 - Consul Avenging Angel (codex marines)

I have never seen so many off-table assets between two armies before! This was a cagey affair, the turning point of which was probably when my nephilims critted the thunderhawk carrying his BTS out of the sky, then it was a case of nabbing objectives to take it 2-1

Game 3 - RichardL (AMTL)

Richard has given me a raking over the coals with this force twice before, but thanks to his planes refusing to activate twice in the game and my destroying one reaver on turn 1 and breaking a second on turn 2 gave me a huge activation advantage, while I couldnt stop him getting my BTS, the combination of scouts sitting on a T&H objective for 2 turns and my dropping half my army on his blitz guard reaver to break it gave me another 2-1 win in turn 3

Overall I managed to place second thanks to Tim crushing all in front of him, but I am more than happy with that result! :D

A great event and really good venue, I particularly enjoyed the orange and white bar cat. Also, some great looking armies on show. Thanks to Steve and Darren for running and thanks to Mike, Steve, and Tim for 3 brilliant games.

Game 1
Mike - Biel Tann
Eldar civil war! We'd both gone double vampire though Mike had a 2nd void spinner and a more mobility with his BTS aspects in wave serpents. I had better AA, more chaff, and a tougher bts with guardians with wraithguard and wraithlords. I tried to keep the objectives reasonably tight as I figured I had the edge in assaults. The first turn was a back and forth with Mike stripping out scouts and falcons on my left flank and me taking down his guardians (to derisk him gong 1st on turn 2 by killing the farseer) and falcons on my right. The game swung on my BTS catching 2 intermingled aspect units in close assault and utterly destroying them. Mike pushed back heavily cutting my BTS down to a wraithguard and a wraithlord but in the end one of my remounted aspects was able to take down Mike's BTS for a 2-0 (Blitz and BTS)

Game 2
Steve G - Death Guard
So this was a very intimidating match up. Steve had battered me the only previous time we played. My aim was to keep it tight, strip his more vulnerable activations where I could before trying to roll up a flank on turn 2 or 3 and using my superior mobility to pick up vulnerable objectives. Steve's dice were horrendous; highlights included shooting from a vampire causing 3 wounds on an unshielded plaguehound, Steve's zombies being broken when close assaulting a 4 man ranger, unit and plague marines generally swapping their armour for paper mache. Despite the dice Steve was able to push some pretty monstrous units into the centre of the board and once again it took a last minute aspect assault to break his BTS and give me the win. (3-0 turn 4, T&H, TSNP, DTF).

Game 3
Tim - Orks
Top table in game 3, I had vertigo! :spin This was an absolute brute of game against a very powerful Ork list. Turns 1 & 2 swung back and forward with Tim quickly picking off some of my smaller units and me taking down some blitz brigades and skorchas. I broke my golden rule of trying to keep the webway gate central (I should have made it my blitz) which meant the guardians ended up a bit isolated on the right flank while Tim battered my left. In the end he maintained his air assets better than me and a last ditch air assault (after my grav tanks and prisms had failed to rally leaving me only 1 aa unit) gave him the win and 1st place and putting me into 4th. (0-2 turn 4, DTF, T&H). Still if you're gonna lose, top table on turn 4 suits me fine!

Very pleased with 4th especially given the fact my opponents had about 600 tournament games more experience than me combined. Also, great to be voted best sport (especially when playing as dirty Eldar!)

Regarding the list I was a bit worried that it was a case of pulling up a blanket to cover my chin and leaving my feet exposed (tough BTS but only 1 void spinner and by Eldar standards a bit slow) but it worked pretty well. The fire prisms might have been a fragile unit in a list with a number of small vulnerable units but they were invaluable in game 2 for repelling Steve's bombers.

Game1: Dptdexys – Marines
Dave got the drop and my BTS tacticals were dead by the third activation – the rest of the game consisted in my army being taken apart in a fairly thorough manner. I had almost no units left by the end of t3, but Dave had some bad rolls in the last turn resulting in 'only' a 2–0 win to him. I'd had my share of bad rolls at the start though, including my terminator air assault bouncing off a scout formation!

Game 2: Duncan – Skitarii
Second game in a row against air marines for Duncan and his impressive skitarii war engine horde. My orbital barrage didn't do much physical damage (hit 3–4 formation but only 1 void shield removed), but the blast markers it placed stuck for the rest of the game in places as Duncan had terrible luck with activation rolls throughout. This ended t3 as a 4–0 win to me, with my terminators finally getting stuck in. Great to face an army i'd not played against before and a new opponent.

Game 3: Nat – Steel Legion
A destructive game on both sides this – after an aggressive first turn for marines most of the game was played close up in the SL table half. Marines assaulted and guard fired with all guns (i'd forgotten chimera and russ had heavy bolters … many dice were rolled!). After three meat-grinder turns we were on 0–0 and the game was called to points due to time, only to reveal that we both had identical points in kills.

I ended in a comfortably middling position from a loss, a win, and a draw and enjoyed a good set of games against 3 sporting opponents. I'd not used codex marines in a competitive context before and games against three very different styles of armies was good experience.

My 'man of the match'/day model was undoubtedly the dreadnaught. Having podded in at the start of turn 1 game 3, it made a frankly embarrassing number of armour saves to end the game effectively unmoved, standing alone in the middle of the SL table half surrounded by a tank and infantry company … just wish i'd thought to try and claim cross-fire from him!
