Both have the ability to get 'lost'. Actually, throwing a middleman in there adds another step for it to get 'lost'. it might confirm to ebay that a package was sent to them, but it doesnt mean its any safer from not making it to the buyer had it been sent straight thru the USPS.

It also no doubt increases the cost of the shipment to the buyer, as well as delays the arrival time..

It's not meant to make it safer for the buyer, it's meant to protect the seller from international buyers claiming they never received a package. Yes, it delays arrival time and costs the buyer more. But they're aware of the price before they bid and if they weren't aware of the delay the first time, they will be the second. And yes, it's another way for eBay to make a buck but a company doing that shouldn't surprise anyone.

There's plenty to be annoyed at eBay about from the seller's point of view (fee increases with no noticable service increase, final value fees now including shipping, etc) but this isn't one of them.

Sorry typed too fast and didnt catch my error. Not making it to the buyer meant not making it to the seller.

Regardless, it's still protecting the seller where as sending it straight via USPS would not. You can't prove that a package arrived with the buyer that way, which means you can be out of your item and your money.

and Ebay can't prove the box actually contained the contents won in the auction.

I can see you are a big fan of the option, I am not. If I wanted to scam the process, I still could.

And I've looked up tracking numbers from the UK on the USPS site. I am sure I can look up USPS tracking numbers on the Royal Mail site if I was sending a package there too.

OK, yes you as the seller can still do something dishonest. But that's not what this is protecting against. It's protecting the seller from being scammed by the buyer.

He can do the same thing. "Hey I got my package and its missing this and that when its supposed to be this"

All ebay knows is that a package was sent. They cant prove it contained everything.

Well just because something isn't perfect doesn't mean it isn't better than the alternatives.

Personally I think it's not just about protection from scamming buyers, but underwriting the risk of international postage in general (things do get genuinely lost when shipping thousands of miles, far more so than domestic). It's hard or in some cases impossible to ship door to door with tracking, so the seller must assume a risk of lost packages if he wants to offer to post internationally. Not to mention that it ruins eBay for new sellers when this happens. eBay have identified that as a blocker, causing people to either not ship internationally or build up complex shipping rules ("I ship to Europe except Italy blah blah blah"), so have come up with a way for the seller to insure against that downside risk whilst still offering the item to the widest market.

Should it be the default? No.
