Block Mania was one of the best games made by GW. Miss the way the company worked back then to now.

Yes, some of them are appearing upside down in the small icon images.

I don't remember ever seeing this game, but i think I heard about it when I was first getting into the hobby. Where I played it was all about games with minis though.

Just thought this might be a nice opportunity to explain a bit of the background behind my hobby gaming.

The first "hobby" game I ever bought was Judge Dredd The Roleplaying Game by Games Workshop. As a massive 2000AD fan I was interested in seeing how you could play a game within the wonderful city of Mega-City One. I quickly became hooked on the JD RPG and bought all of the supplements as well as writing a number of games. Myself and a close group of friends all very much enjoyed it.

Block Mania was the first non-RPG that I bought from GW and enjoyed it greatly. I should mention that I had enjoyed playing Risk before this and had played GW's Risk clone Apocalypse at a relatives.

Warhammer 40,000 came out soon after and I dallied with that a little but was far more interested in Roleplaying at this point.

It was only when I took a chance on Adeptus Titanicus which was on sale for £10 one New Year that the Epic bug started to take a grip of me. When Space Marine was released I really got into it. It was the scale of the battles that really captured my imagination and thereafter I was completely hooked!

I really wish I had picked this game up when I was younger. I was bitten by the miniature bug and hardly ever gamed so I'd always spend my money on more minis rather than games. such a great looking game. I hope FFG one day take over more of GW old RPGs and start releasing some of the older games like this!

I agree, that would be nice! :)

I think there might be licensing problems though for Dredd related games. I'm assuming Mongoose have the licence for their system. It's the first 28mm game I've been tempted by for several decades but I'd like to know what people thought about it.

Mongoose is truly sucky. Slaughtered my old SF favourite. 2300AD in a new version. Inept beyond imagination. Dunno about their Dredd stuff though.

I've heard on the 2000AD forum that they're a mixed bag but I wanted to know what gamers (rather than comic fans) thought of them. Your opinion carries a lot of weight for this Nitpick, thanks for the heads-up!

The only other game I've been interested in is the Star Wars X-Wing game. I have more confidence in those minis although they are undoubtedly expensive.

Well, as I said, I have little experience outside their traveller stuff. Actually, for a laugh, take a look at this http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/15/15928.phtml. The graphics in particular are worth it.

Nice, not come across block mania before. Probably because the game is older than I am… . I've managed to pick up a few of GWs older boardgames on car bootsales, but not that one, thanks for sharing Bissler.

That article is marvellous and it gave me a damn good laugh! My favourite quote was "make a bunch of random rolls, add modifiers, and hope that the results are not insane"! :D

You're very welcome sir! I should mention if you are on the hunt for it that there is an expansion set called Mega-Mania. This allows the game to be played with 3 - 4 players and expands the mayhem, making it a longer and even more fun experience. I have it but not enough people to play... :(

Ive not bothered reading it but they used to offer out the rule book as a pdf for free. I flicked through it just to see what it looked like and the look of it is brilliant, really got that 2000ad vibe. There was a lot of parts missing though, a lot of pics were placeholders until they finished the rules. I have no idea about the rules, I had an attention span of a...oh, look a squirrel! ;D

Some of the minis dont look so great, but the newer ones have gotten me really tempted. No one I know would be interested in Dredd stuff, but they would be fun just to paint.

Do it. It is a great game. In fact I have played more X-wing than epic over the last few years ;D

Sure £10-15 for a ship might look expensive, but each ship comes with several pilot options and upgrade cards, so can be flown in several different configurations (not to mention mixing cards from other sets).
If you start looking at getting character models for any of the various skirmish games on the market, they will set you back close to a tenner each and you still have to paint them. Plus there is no scenery involved, all the basic games just use the asteroid tokens.

Many years ago when I was a teenager, I managed to pick up copies of Rogue Trooper and Judge Dredd board games at car boat sales. Played them loads. Rogue Trooper was just like a sci fi version of talisman, it was great.

Cheers Matt, I was beginning to think that X-Wing may be the way to go, mainly for the reason that I don't have 28mm scenery or the space for it. Great to get a recommendation from someone I trust on here also!

Once I'm back at work and I can get my finances sorted I'll definitely give this a serious look.

Cheers!
