My nick is German/English for "TheCheapAlien". When i was akid playing the game Marathon i needed a nick for multiplaergaming. Because the aliens in that game sounded weired/cheap I chose the name "DasBilligeAlien". Its my nickname for nearly everything and necer taken. :)

My avatar is an artwork of my own commander design for the game Planetary Annihilation. Maybe i should make a 3D variant.

I created my avatar in MS Word using the drawing tools. I basically adapted the Saim Hann cosmic serpent symbol into both an infinity symbol and an oroboros. Back when I played 40k, Saim Hann was my army, which was back in 3rd edition days when jetbikes sucked, so it shows that I am a glutton for punishment.

Anyway, I claim that it is the symbol used by the various corsair bands and exodite worlds that fall along the galactic orbit of the Saim Hann craftworld to show their affinity to Saim Hann. I use it as an excuse to use corsair BFG ships in Saim Hann livery, and also shows how much I wish there had been an official line of exodite minis.

Oddly enough, sometime after I started using it as my avatar, a very similar symbol (without the eldar stylization) was created by a video game maker (Cryptic or Paragon Studios) as a logo for a faction in the MMO (video game) City of Heroes. That still annoys me, because I played that game, and it irked me each time that symbol popped up.

As for my user name, it is my name (sort of). Another odd aside, there is currently a US college basketball player who's actual first name is Semaj. That just looks backwards to me.

I took my user name from one of my favorite minor characters from Star Wars, captain (then admiral) Piett. I really liked that he survived most of two movies in a command structure that included darth vader. Sure he bought it in the last movie, but who's going to survive an A-wing to the face?

My previous avatar was from team America world police, which seemed appropriate since I have found myself in the service of NATO on three separate occasions :) once I took stewardship of the emperors children list, I switched it to hedonism-bot from Futurama. There seems to be a bit of synergy between the two SF worlds there.

Guess I'll chime in here too.

My handle is a corruption of my legal name and has been my alternate personality / persona for 2 decades now. Used from the days of being a b-boy, DJ, BBS handle up to modern days running around doing solutions architecture. Ever since I was a kid my Mom would say, "Your Jim is showing..." whenever I'd act like a stinker or troublemaker, referring to my Uncle and his charms. I guess this is the logical extension. Zimms is also a shortening of Zimmy which is what my name sounded like with the rebbe at yeshiva would say my name (accent was strongeith him). The run-on spelling is a typo during registration that I didn't notice forever. Avatar is from Ren and Stimpy, Space Madness. Everyone seems to have static images so I figured I'd add something seizure inducing. Yeah...my Jim is showing...

As an aside, I had to use adblock plus to block your avatar some time ago (and still have it blocked), because it was actually giving me very bad headaches, so this is not as wide of the mark as you may think.

Mark and initials of my next two names and country (NZ). Hard to spell and pronounce, and sounds like I'm trying to con people or something. Really should have thought about it more, but now stuck with it... unless I get CS to change it I suppose...!
Avatar because we are space apes... with a bit more frontal cortex, opposable thumbs, and delusions of grandeur. :)

At the danger of being really boring, my handle is the same on every forum I'm on... my last name :D
I'm trying hard to build a brand around my name, so using anything else would be rather counter productive. Besides, all this anonymity online actually annoys me a little. Personally I'd rather know people by their real names, but that's just me.

The avatar is a very old semi-self-portrait. These days I've got hair, though... and I'm not as angry anymore ;)

@ Markconz: Where in NZ are you? And what version of Epic do you play?

Cheers,
Christian

Hi Christian, I'm in Christchurch, and play Epic Armageddon. There are some guys in Auckland who play Netepic I think.
Love your work by the way, and great to have you here! My partner is also from Germany, Leipzig.
I tend to agree on lack of anonymity being preferable, though for work reasons some of us have to keep as private as possible online for safety reasons (e.g. if working in criminal justice).

Mine was a character name I made up for a MUD (http://www.retromud.org/) back in the early 2000s. I honestly can't remember where it came from, I probably just looked around the room, saw a Nirvana CD and tweaked the spelling a bit. I did have an image for that character but I don't bother to use it as an avatar because the name isn't really connected to it any more.

I have a few different handles I use on the interwebs. I'd like to think there is a logic for which one I pick when I register on a forum but not sure how much that is true. It's no doubt possible if you dig to connect these together, and to my "real" (i.e. work) persona anyway.

Thanks! Trying to place that picture has really been making my brain itchy.

Handle is a portmanteau of Todd and "-man". Plus it resembles "Otterman".

My avatar is Chester A Lampwick, a Simpsons character. He is no longer interested in creating things, because he has a million dollars, a solid gold house, and a rocket car.

I've been using "Jodrell" as my handle online for about 20 years. When I invented it I was a first-year physics undergrad, and Jodrell Bank is a fairly-famous radio telescope centre in the UK. Plus it sounded cool.

My avatar is a joke: if you know any programming you know that it tells the computer to just kill forever; which seemed appropriate for Necrons.
