IMO, if they're a ridiculously expensive 0-1 choice melee unit without any unique abilities, there's no point to having them. Leaving aside the bit where they scream for abstraction in any case.

Equivalent to JumpPack quipped Terminators isn't unique?

It's not like Blood Angels have no other unit that is frenzied, tougher than normal and uses jump packs and swords.

Last time i checked Death Company are mandatory and limited to only one formation. With Sanguinary Guard you are able to field a second formation that is frenzied, tougher than normal and uses jump packs and swords.

Almost all of the arguments for and against Sanguinary Guard have been made here -

I'm going to remind people this really is a vote to see about doing a trial to see if we should even attempt to do this in the list in a controlled and tested manner. There's plenty of levels to batrep why or why not

I'm pretty close to on the fence and can see both sides and even slightly fall on the "no" for the BA list but not sure why a trial to see if we should even pursue it at all is that contentious. Meh what do I know anyways? [shrugs] ;D

I just think it's a waste of time. But that's just me, test away by all means.

Never! It's too dark and bleak up here. The dark future of the 41st millennium fits us perfectly.

They're trialing a new fluffy unit, which cost alot and forces the SC to be in an assault unit. Can't see what the problem is with that? It's not a gamebreaker in any way.

Progress before stagnation.

My point is that if you're trialing the unit you've already decided that it's ok to include it, if you can balance it. As far as I have understood the question this is not about balance, but about theme and abstraction level. I don't think that's something you can easily test, so I think that Dobbsy should make the call to either add it or not.

+1

You can balance pretty much any unit rules-wise, this issue for me is about adding the cool toys from 40k whether they're needed or not and how granular we're willing to go with the game, looking at the votes it's clear this is a divisive issue and really speaks about how different people view the game, for me, balance and gameplay trumps all, if it means I can't use the latest 'hyper muscled necrobutcher' in my army, I'm fine with that, I can either convert my own and count them as something else, or keep my hand in with the odd game of 40k

not including units for the sake of including them does not equal stagnation.... there has been a trend on these forums lately about pushing forwards and I agree with it, but blindly forging ahead without considering why we're making the changes is just as counter productive in my opinion, the discussion is the important thing to have, and we are doing that right now

The opinion and vote is split but Dobbsy has already made the call already to trial the SG - they're in the trial BA list put out some days ago.

Lets just agree to disagree as to whether they 'should' be in the list or not as I don't see either side persuading the other and the discussion is just going round in circles.
