I'm currently into NetEpic Gold but considering the switch to Armageddon (reading up on the rules and comparing as I write). One area which may put the proverbial spanner in the works is basing. Generally the rules on this don't look too stringent however, where I would make changes is in the number of minis on a base. For example, I prefer to base bikes, Tau battle suits and others one to a base. Though this won't be an issue locally would it cause concern if I ever entered a competition setting?

I doubt you'll ever find this a problem, from my point of view.
Especially if you put work and creativity into your basing, i wouldn't have a problem at all for our event.

Can only speak for myself and our club though! :)

Here is an extract from the rulebook on basing (stands)
Quote:
1.1.2 Stands
  • A stand may be no more than 40mm and no less than 5mm across in any direction.
  • A stand must be at least 20mm across in one direction (ie, a 5mm by 5mm stand is not allowed, but a 5mm by 20mm stand would be okay).
  • Stands representing infantry units must have at least three infantry models and may not have more than seven.
  • Infantry mounted on bikes or horses must have between two and four models mounted on each base.
  • Stands representing artillery must have between one and two artillery pieces and up to six crew models.

That said, the rules are intended to be reasonably flexible including the use of proxies etc. So as long as you and you opponent are clear on what each stand actually is and you are not using the same model to proxy different units (covered in the 5 min warm up), I am sure there should not be any real issues.

Note:- For preference Units (especially infantry) should be easily distinguishable for those among us with poor eyesight in dim conditions :)

Note that the Tau list has some explicit notes about basing:

Basing Tau Units: Although infantry Crisis Battlesuits and Krootox should be mounted 2-4 to a base. Fire Warriors, Pathfinders, Stealth, Gun Drones, Kroot, Kroot Hounds, Kroot Master Shapers are based as regular infantry. All other units are based individually. Feel free to add a Drone to infantry and Battlesuit stands, as well as light vehicle bases and armoured vehicles, if you wish. The Broadside unit assumes a single battlesuit accompanied by controlled shield drones.

However, like others have said, in the tournaments I have been to I have not heard anybody have a problem with the number of units used on a base. There is a lot of variation. Everybody knows that lots of models are not easy to come by and need to be spread out.

If your crisis suits are based on 20x20mm bases why not just stick two to a warmaster size base with magnets or even a small dab of blue tac? Problem solved!! :)
