So knighthood might be the way to go for these too then?

Only problem, as I see it, is the size available minis, most suitable proxies will be far smaller than their Imperial counterparts. But that might not be a showstopper?

Other than that, survivability seems to be key.

As for the nova reactor, This might be difficuklt to implement on this scale. In WH40K these guys are single monsterous creatures, here they will come in a detachment of 3 or 4 knights/Walkers. If we where to follow fluff and add som nova reactor effects, then those effects should problably have to apply for all stands in a detachment. So that you don't have one stand firing its secondary twice, another going AWOL gunning his jetpac for adidtional 30cm cuising into the sunset and the third shielding up? It would lead to excessive bookkeeping, or so i think...

Weapons wise, one could certainly do 2 setups, but would we then have 2 different battlefield roles? Is it perhaps not better to identify any holes in the current lits and tailor the Riptide to meet those requirements thus leaving us with one setup?

N

Hi!

Given there is no designated proxy, whose to say an appropriately sized model can not be selected?

I'd say make it a knight and use something suitable. :)

I agree identifying any holes in the current list and plug them with this unit is the way to go. A knight with shields and some heavy hitting weapon sounds attractive.

Yeah, the reactor is tricky. Don't know what to do there.

As for proxies, I haven't seen anything that I thought made a good looking riptide. Most that I have found are way too battletech-ish. (although Deacon at Onslaught Miniatures has said he intends to do an OTC mega-rig at some point and my guess is that will end up being a decent proxy)

I was contemplating how to make the nova reactor work. How about giving the Riptide Knights detachment a pool of extra dice that they can spend on rerolling failed saves or missed shots, or to add to CAF or add some cm to their move. You may not reroll any rerolls or spend more than2 extra dice on caf or movement. The pool should probably not be to big. Perhaps 6 dice for a detachment of 3 knights.

Well, just an idea...

Hi!

Funny thing is the alternate plasma rules for titans we have been testing would cover this beautifully.

Since not everyone would use them, we need to come up with a "neutral" means to do it.

I have several ideas, some from back in the day. Hopefully we can craft something useable.

Best one I have seen so far, but still looks pretty battletech-y to me. With a little conversion to change the weapon and add a shield I think it might work well.

How tall is that figure, do you know?

Hi!

That's pretty cool!

If you want something "tau" looking why not these...

http://www.hawkwargames.com/collections ... d-vehicles

Look at this thread were I review some and there are size comparisons...

viewtopic.php?f=57&t=25584&hilit=dropzone+commander

I could see some of those as a viable alternative without a BT look.

I love the DZC figs (and those size comparisons really help) but I don't like those walkers for Tau. They have the Tau curvy-ness to them but they are all hunched over. To my eye they look more like tanks with legs than battlesuits. To be honest, they most remind me of warhounds and imperial knights rather than Tau.

To me, one of the distinguishing things about Tau suits is that they are upright and humanoid, they have definite torso, arms and legs, as well as the smooth lines.

BTW, my figuring has the Riptide standing around 1"-1.5", does that seem right to anyone?

Hi!

I originally got them for prospective "titans" for either Tau or a future Slann force, so I agree they remind you more of warhounds than nights.

Since battletech stuff is not favored and dropzone commander is more scout titan like, I would recommend Heavy Gear.

The models are between 1inch and a half to two inches, humanoid and upright and they use weapons like a tau would use.

Here's some links, tell me what you think.

Actually there are quite a lot of interesting things in this line (i haven't looked at it in many years). Things that may fit in a probable slann list as well as a whole slew of probable Tau knights.

On this thread:

The velite or the verger I think. They look quite nice on the table...

If I remember correctly, all the heavy gear models come with a selection of weapons, and they might fit some of the smaller 40k Tau weapons.

As an aside, I have always liked the heavy gear models and always thought about picking up the game.

Hi!

I believe you are correct and the model kit comes with a weapons selection to customize the model. They have done this for a long time.

I have followed the game since its beginning back in the 90's. I even have the mammoth in the original larger scale!

The models are very nice. They have gotten a lot better. Not too thrilled that some (or all?) kits are resin now, but that is the way of things now.

But the models are sweet! Some of the walker models give me a lot of conversion ideas. :)

Sweet, just about covers it yes :)

I was not aware of these. They have quite an extensive range too. Not to happy about the hand weapons though, but apart from that, they would fit nicely indeed.

And I think the warhammer is somwere between 3 and 5 cm tall. However, they are almost out of stock at Iron Wind models. Originally, I was thinking about using som 15mm GZG battlearmours I have lying around. I still do, but it is mighty temting ro ordere some of those Gears...

All these different proxie ideas seem to have a common feature in the form of a shouldemounted missile pod. That is probably something we should take into consideration when developing stats for the Riptide TAU knight.

I was thinking that we should consider making these a special card. That would give us som leverage if we should want to cheese up the stats a bit...
