Robots aren't banned in the Imperium as such, it's artificial intelligence that's banned, as in the distant past during the height of humanity's technological prowess the AIs rebelled and terrible wars raged across the galaxy, nearly wiping humanity out.
Isn't that the Terminator and Skynet?
Its also inspired by the Dune background - where following an AI vs human war all computers are banned and replace by perfectly bred and trained human mutants (including space navigators, telepathic messengers and super soldiers) following strict religious rules set down by a number of urber powerful medieval-style sects waiting for the return of the perfect human messiah - sound familiar * ?
Its also a good argument to use when sniffy historical wargamers complain that why would anyone be using tanks/swords/shotguns etc in the future
* Don't get me wrong - I'm all for the inspiration/cross pollination of sci-fi ideas. Just gets my goat when GW try to claim it's their original IP in court...
