Something I've been toying with....

I have all the Epic armies except Tau. Most of it is painted and I'm likely to keep that (e.g. stuff in my sig).
However I still have vast piles of Chaos, Squats, Human and Eldar Knights, rare old Titan bits and variant vehicles and so on. Much of it hunted down on e-bay and even paid some stupid prices sometimes to get the last few bits to complete forces.

Still I've been looking at it and wondering, should I really keep all this unpainted stuff?

Things is, I could also spend time painting and playing with figures from companies like Dark Realm, Exodus Wars, Onslaught, Troublemaker and so on, and thus supporting those companies. Realistically there is only so much time to spend on this hobby, and this old epic stuff would consume a lot of it. I've already kind of done this with BFG - switching to Dark Realm ships rather than tracking down GW ones on e-bay. A couple of Behemoths arrived from Exodus Wars yesterday (thanks for the bonus Tom!), and they seem nicer to work with than the old GW pieces.

Being in a state of cognitive dissonance here... I wondered if anyone else would like to offer an opinion?

A little of both to be had I expect. I took huge piles of extra half collected armies and extra fleets and started trading and selling myself. The idea would be that I could focus on finishing off a small core set of armies and fleets and simply letting the other stuff go. The funds I've gained there will pay for a large amount of stuff from Onslaught and TMG (EW already has bought my soul for my guard long ago). The time I've freed up on all that stuff will allow me to focus on the new stuff coming. Its been rather liberating actually :)

That's what's working for me but do what feels right. Peeping your Nu-Tau fleet was really awesome and I hope to see more coming that way from you. :)

PS dibs on your Chaos ;)

If it was me, I'd keep it. I have an ever increasing pile of components for "when i have free time" (basically, i assume that as my life progresses i will have less money to buy new stuff, or more time to work on projects, or both. so stockpiling makes sense to me)

Hi!

I have thought of this as well Markconz. A lot actually. While the abnormal size of my collection poses a realistic barrier to getting rid of it all, my purchase for the last several years have been solely with the model lines you mentioned plus Evil and Chaos recent stuff (and soon I will add Deacon's stuff as well).

GW 6mm is no more. At least for me it has been that way for over a decade. I always wished for alternatives and it seems that that has finally been made a reality. We have a veritable wealth of people making 6mm figures now. People that actually make great stuff that we like.

I say support them fully. While I may still hold on to GW epic stuff, its purely sentimental for me at this point. I now look forward to building armies from companies that actually care to support their minis line.

Perhaps my only criticism would be that said companies really need to develop some rules for their lines. I know some have them in the works, so that's good. But that's the only thing keeping me from permanently mothballing my epic stuff in pro of their lines - some kick ass rules!

So, your not alone in these thoughts. As you say hobby time is precious, especially when your getting older and time for it is less. I definitely would agree that the time is better spent in people and lines really invested in 6mm.

maybe sort it into 6 lots? hold on to it for now but when you have a hobby urge that needs funds take the next priority lot, check it out and if you don't still want to keep it sell it?

I'm largely in the same boat here. I have a painted Eldar army and enough bits to make an Iyanden one, but I think it should all go really. I've never really got on with the Eldar so hoarding them doesn't make much sense. The same goes for the ork army I started. I have nid's for the hoard feel and that's painted!

So time to cull a bit I think, still leaves me 2 IG and a Titan army to paint so not as if I'm lacking options... then there is Onslaught mini's to consider too...

Nooo... don't sell your Epic! I need opponents when I come to New Zealand (got my visa sorted to stay 23 months from late Dec) and I'll probably settle in Christchurch for some time.

You have a great selection of beautifully painted armies! Having already invested so much time and effort you should definitely keep them. It could be nice to carry on and paint up other armies with different playstyles in future, when you feel like it. I've invested heavily in in the game and have a similarly large collection and intend to still be collecting, painting and playing for decades into the future. GW may not sell epic any more but who cares, it's a great game and there are more alternative suppliers and models available and coming out than ever, if you know where to look. If you have some particularly rare pricey stuff you're not that bothered about sell it though, I sold some unreleased titan weapons and my FW Tau for a load and replaced them with an army of Tav.

I'll be selling some of my GW spares to fund purchases from other companies, but would not consider just selling 'non-spare' parts from GW armies i've yet to get round to. I don't see supporting new companies and keeping my old GW as incompatible. For instance, I have a mostly complete set of minis for a tau airforce from FW, and i will buy rigs and APCs from Onslaught miniatures to complement my FW minis and use both together, nothing about that situation makes me feel I should sell the FW airforce. Especially with minis like GW chaos and the eldar knights, as they have some fun sculpts in themselves which are out of keeping with the current CAD-dominated trend of miniature design. Some of the minis have an aesthetic value in themselves to me which remains whatever GW stops making and whatever new companies start making.

Whatever you do, be sure to keep extra vehicle hulls. that way you can convert them later if new variants come out, or some enterprising individual starts selling aftermarket conversion kits.

if you're not realistically going to paint and use it, and don't feel immediate panic when you consider flogging it, I'd suggest sitting on it for a few months, perhaps lay the force out and see whether it inspires you or not, and if you don't feel any different after that time, sell it and buy new stuff! or pay the bills or whatever :)

I know exactly how you feel, Mark. A couple of years ago I sold my entire Tyranid army (except for two Dominatrixes which are still looking for a good home) after coming to the conclusion that I would never get around to painting it or even finish collecting minis for it. I had never gotten around to buying any Bio-Titans and given how much they go for on ebay, I realized I probably never would.

Now I'm at the point where I'm considering unloading another entire army. While my armies are nowhere near Primarch-sized, I do have a substantial armies, being able to field at least 20k points per SM/TL TO&E for all the main races. I'm just not sure which to get rid of. Getting rid of my Tyranids was easy, except when I play against Dave since he bought a good chunk of my stuff. But getting rid of something else will be a difficult decision.

Instead of unloading entire armies, I am giving serious consideration to reducing the size of my armies. How likely am I to have an opportunity to field all six of my Phantom/Warlock Titans? Or my four Great Gargants? Also, I know I will never paint everything I own.

Some good thoughts guys - thanks for all the feedback! For now I think I will keep the lot in fact, and reconsider as time progresses... And don't worry Glyn whatever happens I will definitely still have plenty of epic for when people come visiting!
