It seems the central arguments are:
FOR:
Protects model; Can (if you do it right) look good; Helps with defining the model size on the table.
AGAINST:
Extra work; Can look a little odd depending on the table surface (but you already have this issue with infantry, walkers etc); and one of my own I noticed: often means your army takes up more room on the table. For something like a guard army this can make deployment very difficult.
Let me know if I've missed anything important. I think I'm still sat of the fence on this one for now.
By not basing, your Vehicle's "not-base" always matches the terrain board ... If you know what I mean ...

I've seen some nice "snow" covered bases, for example, but if you're gaming on green or tan terrain ... well you get the idea ...
