Quote (Mojarn Piett @ 27 2004 Jan.,07:15) | Looks good at a glance save for the battlesuits having reinforced armor. This combined with the ubiquitous 4+ save makes them as durable as a Leman Russ or a Land Raider, which really isn't the case in 40k. | Yeah, but thats 4+ against AP fire. AP fire doesnt even effect a land raider, but in 40K, a (very) lucky glancing hit from a bolter could still do damage (if im not mistaken - I've only played 40K once....)

Yeah, but thats 4+ against AP fire. AP fire doesnt even effect a land raider, |
That's true, but since a battlesuit is classified as infantry you can't shoot it with AT weapons, so the battlesuits are immune to heavy weapons. And then there are the small arms used in firefight that DO affect Land Raiders, although these may well be said to include meltaguns in abstracted form so the point is kind of moot.
but in 40K, a (very) lucky glancing hit from a bolter could still do damage (if im not mistaken - I've only played 40K once....)
|
Nope, a bolter has a strength of 4. When shooting at vehicles you roll a d6 and add the weapon's strength. The maximum result a bolter can have is 10, which is well short of the 14 required to get a glancing hit on a Land Raider.

They could only glance vehicles with armour 10 if they rolled a 6, and 10 is the lowest armour value in WH40K.
However the majority of WH40K vehicles do have a rear armour value of 10, so if you can flank enemy vehciles you could potentially destroy them with bolters.
The land raider is one of the few vehicles that doesn't have a rear armour of 10 (LR is armour 14 all round).
In E:A the bolters (small arms) can still destroy land raiders in firefights.

Hi guys, new to the board, glad i found it really! I am (was) an old epic vet from the early days of the plastic "Beetle" warlord titan when it was new! lol but how gutted am I after amassing the following :
2 Imperator titans 12 Plastic warlords 16 Warhounds 9 Reavers 3 Artillery companies 2 of each super heavy tank company etc etc etc etc etc etc absolutley flippin hundreds of thousands of points over 5 years of fanatical collecting...... i sold the lot, and embraced 3rd edition 40k....... How the dumb ass i feel now after looking at the Armageddon prices!
The prices reflect (in general) the average GW price climbs (cue the misty eyed looks at two plastic landraiders for ?12, a Wraithlord for ?6 etc etc) but im still not impressed! I certainly dont think that much of the new models either and will probably buy the forge world models (which incidently work out cheaper by the way.........) as i certainly cant justify paying double the cost of a Reaver titan to what i used to pay for them! Especially when its an old model re-boxed which didnt look too hot anyways!
I had decided to put my 40K stuff aside after nearly 10 successuful career years at no less then 4 grand tournaments (including qualifying for two finals!) and about a dozen campaign weekends (Armaggeddon, Eye of Terror, Total War, All out war etc etc) and pick Epic up again. I ignored the last system becuase........... well basically i thought it was pants! Dilema I am now faced with is will the high prices force Epic:Armaggeddon into Man'O'War obscurity? Man'O'War was (still is) an immensley playable game and great fun! Problem was that a lack of any real support from GW and a pricing structure that was a little heavy for what you where getting for your money ment it only lasted a few years before being recalled and replaced with yet more stuff for 40k and Warhammer.
On the other hand it could go the other way...... Under the fanatic banner, Necromunda, Inquisitor, Mordheim etc are still going strong so maybe epic could be on the eve of a big come back? maybe........
Ive played some of the new rules (picking the main book up this weekend) and i dont mind it too much. Still getting the hang of working out the initiative order and blast markers but generally it seems to be quite good fun and ive been looking for an excuse to rebuild my tank companies for years!
I'll finish rambling with a few thoughts of my own on the price of the models....
" If i like the system and it works for me then I will buy the models with little thought to the cost....Why? Because ?20 investment in a tank company gets me countless future hours of fun gaming with my mates, or about an hour in the pub......."

Welcome to the boards!
Very true especially the last bit, Pity about the sold army, lucky I kept my epic even when I was going through my 'e-baying' stage. I'm pretty enthusiastic about the new version personally, being very fond of the ruleset and the way the armies are playtested 'by the people for the people'.
All I can say is it will be as sucessful as you and we can make it really, try the system for a bit and if you come to like it introduce your gaming friends to it, run demo games, raise interest, etc...

Welcome Turbodave,
Well I've just played 4 games of EA this week, which is some kind of record... small games with the same forces and rather than getting bored we just keep seeing possibilites... this is a great system... I just wish I could buy the rulebook here rather than having to put up with these annoying print-outs.
I play 40k occasionally also, and IMO epic is a much better system, with far more scope for different strategies and tactics with each army.
In my local area I have seen old epic players come back into the fold with EA... and new players starting to come on board, including historical gamers. Most of the people are starting with second hand stuff, as the price of the new figures with postage, to New Zealand from the UK is a killer.
I'm already planning the expansion to take my orks to a solid 15,000 points plus options (thats 3 max sized tourney armies). I will wait until the end of the year when more models are released and do an order with other people tho.
Personally I think that in spite of the prices of the new stuff, this system will continue to grow and develop. Like you say, compare it to a night out, or computer gaming, and it is not that terrible. The money I spent on alcohol and two restaurant meals last week would could have been a new army for EA!!

That said, E:A and 40k are on very different levels and E:A is definitely more tactical.

Quote (Turbodave @ 06 2004 Feb.,00:26) | | Hey turbodave, welcome. Always nice to meet another Man O' War fan! I have a section for Man O' War on my site you might be interested in:
http://www.knowltonsworld.com
Look under games. If you have anything you want to add just email it to me and I will post it.
Anyway, I think Epic A will be more successful than I thought. I thought the release schedule was stupid, but now I am realizing making everyone wait will just extend the life of the game. I certainly would wait a few years for new fleets or ships for Man O' War today!
BTW, have you been paying attention to the auctions for Man O' War goods on ebay since GW stopped selling their archive Man O' War minis? Luckily, I just got the entire Elf fleet I was looking for (which was the last fleet I didn't have), but man, a 1000 point fleet can cost you $90-110! Sometimes without the masts and sails!
