I agree ... they are assault guns or to go a little further the Nashorn may be considered a Self-Propelled Anti-Tank Gun ... The discussion continues on TMP - http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=289400

But Wikipedia thinks they are tanks ;)

What about a Land Raider - TPC ('Tank Personnel Carrier')?

edit: those TMP guys... ;D

edit2: i used to work with NATO's ADat-Px standards, seem to recall they just defined stuff as a collection of fairly unambiguous attributes rather than having a 'tank' category per se.

I would consider the Raider to be an IFV. In it's most common pattern, its primary role is the transport and support of infantry, and it carries both anti-infantry and anti-armor weapons. It does not have a turreted main gun, and it's primary role is not to engage other armor, so it does not fit the modern definition of a tank. It would be an extrordinarily heavily armed and armored IFV, but an IFV nonetheless.

Wouldn't this qualify as a tank?

I remember reading about these when I was a teenager. No turret, but still called a tank...

That's not a tank, THIS is a tank!

Apparently the Germans actually tried to build this monster, mounting a naval heavy cruiser's gun turret onto an armoured chassis.

It would have weighed 1000 tons, traveled at 3 miles an hour, destroyed any bridge it tried to use, and been one hell of a magnet for artillery & aircraft strikes... which is why they only got as far as building the turret.

It (the S-103) is an assault gun, though (like the StuG) its employment is similar to an MBT. Turrets are expensive in production and maintenance, and using assault guns is a sensiblw move for cash strapped militaries.

Just sayin', Wiki calls it a tank. I still have the giant, old World Military Power book somewhere in my basement which featured it as a tank.

"A rose by any other name would smell as sweet..."

Reminds me of the skit from Mad About You, oddly enough...
"You can Chinos that are Khaki, but not all things Khaki are Chinos. Hell, you can have khaki and not even have them be pants!"
"What the hell is she talking about?"

It's another tank armored vehicle that doesn't fit a neat category.

Cladistically it is not a tank. It does not posses the neccessary features to be a tank. Functionally it is a tank. It is used operationally in a manner consistent with other countries MBTs.

I tend to go by the cladistic definition, while being aware that it is used in the MBT role. This is similar to my reference to the Merkava earlier. I'd consider it (the Merkava) an IFV, an armored troop carrier with the ability to engage both soft and hard targets. Functionally it is at least as much an MBT as an IFV though.

Even though the "Swedish S" is called an MBT is really is more of an assault gun, IMO ...

I like the "RATTE", in concept, but yes, not very practical for the reasons already mention as well as others .... 8)

And not just cheaper to produce, but from a tactical standpoint, it has a much lower signature ...
