Hi,

Some of you may remember my efforts last year with some Brigade Model's Marmot tanks which were supposed to go into my IG regiment but being "true" 1:300 they looked a little titchy alongside GW minis. Not to be perturbed i decided to use them in an all proxi Ad Mech force which i plan to use as a repository for any any other "strange" looking minis i like and can't find a place for.

I recently noticed AngelBarracks is now selling the Plazma Blast range in the UK (in nice inflation resistant £s :-) ) and with the Skittarii list being firmed up I've been thinking about adding to the army (when my heads out of Eldar mode.) Unfortunately it looks like the Chimedons are now flavour of the day so i don't think the Brigade Lisas will cut it as APCs anymore (no cannon) but here are some of the thoughts i've been having :

Chimedons : DRM Ramjack, Exodus Achilles, GZG phallanx or paladin (6mm), Microworld Komodo.

Ordinatus Minoris - DRM Castillian / Brigade Franz Joseph / Ral pather : morrigu-fire-support / GZG phallanx or paladin (15mm), Microworld Infurnus.

Ordinatus Major - Plazma B Tiger claw, DRM Trident (base) or Spartan Large Landships (esp jap)

Rapiers - Plazma Blast wolf bite trike or Spider blade with missiles (thinking more like tracked robots)

Hydra - DR Firewall, Microworld Warthog

Colossus Robots - DRM - Verger or DRM - Velite

Knights - DRM - Vorace or Critical Mass - Ayame Battlesuit

Macharius tanks - DRM Bastion, Microworld Infurnus

Thunder bolts - Plazma - Shadowasp, Exodus Harpy or Valkyrie or DRM Lance or Piranhas

Praetorians - Brigade power armour or Plasma Drazzar (Thinking more like exploritor suits upgraded with weapons.)

My plan is basically a relatively high tech (for 40k) forgeworld. Quite like the idea of multi-tracked/wheeled vehicles that might have been retrofitted from mining/exploratory/industrial vehicles. Any one got any more suggestions ?

And most importantly, having been burnt before with scale i'd like to get it right this time. Any one got scale pics for any of the units above (pref to GW as that's most of what i have currently) ? Particularly the Plazma Blast, GZG (!) Microworld and Critical Mass minis?

I had those Imperial Robots and remember you had to give them commands or something?
Or did they roll on a chart?

Anyway, I do have a small selection of various 6mm vehicles and a while back did a comparison exercise that includes a few of what you mentioned.

They have all been put on a plastic base so that they are starting at roughly the same height as the Plasma Blast Games 6mm sci-fi troopers, hopefully this will give you an idea of their size.

1 Brigade Models – Hippo Heavy Truck – Flat Bed Version
2 Brigade Models – Hippo Heavy Truck – Bowser Version
3 Brigade Models – Hippo Heavy Truck – Office Body Version
4 Xmarx Tanker Truck*
5 Xmarx Supply Truck*
6 Steel Crown Productions – Guild Enforcer Urban Pacification Squadron MKII
7 Plasma Blast Games – Hammerhead Heavy Tank
8 Reiver Castings – Heavy Tank – Tracked
9 Adler Miniatures – Kh'Erian Main Battle Tank (East Wind)
10 Adler Miniatures – Python Main Battle Tank
11 Dark Realm Miniatures – Pax Arcadian – Chasseur
12 Dark Realm Miniatures – Pax Arcadian – Castellian
13 Dark Realm Miniatures – Pax Arcadian – Ramjack Armoured Personal Carrier
14 Ground Zero Games – Paladin heavy hi-mobility wheeled battle tank
15 Adler Miniatures – Scorpion Armoured Personal Carrier
16 Ground Zero Games – Phalanx heavy hi-mobility wheeled APC

* both of these are their 8mm version, I did get the 6mm versions but thought them too small compared to a 6mm figure.

Whilst we are talking about 6mm and the various companies not being as compatible as others here are my thoughts why and how basing vehicles can make a big difference.

In this scale when troops are on a 2mm thick base not basing vehicles can result in 'people' standing taller than a tank.
So by basing vehicles you increase them by the same thickness as the infantry and maintain the illusion of scale.

Not basing just makes vehicles look shorter than they should be.

This disparity is furthered by the fact that miniatures of infantry in 6mm are not right anyway.
Let us assume that 1mm = 1 foot.

On this basis it is fairly easy to get a vehicle to be the right size.

However infantry can be the right height but not the right width.
6mm infantry always look too big when placed next to a proper scale vehicle.
I have just measured my forearm and it is just over 4" wide.
Which is 1/3rd of a foot.
Sooo using the assumption that 1mm = 1 foot the arms on a 6mm figure should be about 0.33mm wide.
This is simply not possible.
I have just measured some of my 6mm troops and they are about 3mm wide at the shoulders.
I am not aware of many people that are 3 foot wide.

So we have the situation where in order to make 1/300th figures robust they must be bigger in 'chunkiness' than their vehicle counterparts which can be the right size as they are essentially just chunks of lead and be 0.33mm smaller without compromising sturdiness.

As such infantry already look bigger than they should next to a vehicle so basing the vehicles helps to redress the balance a bit.

That was a bit of a waffle, but hopefully you get what I am trying to say

By the way - If anyone wants to post me a GW rhino and or Infantry figure I will be happy to do comparison shots next to any of the stuff I stock if you need it.

Michael.

Great stuff Angel Barracks - some stuff in there i didn't even know about ! I'll see if i can find an old rhino to post over.

Must admit, i'd had much the same thought on basing when i got those brigade minis - i tried them on a 2mm base and they look fine next to infantry - even GW - might get round to do the tanks for this army (alternatively a friend suggested i used them for squats ! :-p

I remember the 1:300 WWII micro armour i used to play with some old school wargamers and brigade's are obviously in the same vane. GW gets a lot of flak for their scales but i think they understand their market - generally people want minis which "look" right together on the table top and when it's sci-fi mostly its not as important if its exactly scales with its 40k equivalent. The invention of hi-res digi cameras and forums on the internet have changed things slightly (but that's a different argument and applies to painting styles too.)

That said, the efforts on these forums do blow me away sometimes ! :-)

That would be great, it will enable me to do some comparison shots that people can get some use from.

Do you ever go to any of the wargames shows in Plymouth or Exeter Blip?

No, haven't been to any of the shows. To be honest i've been out of wargaming for about 15 years. Had a couple of operations on my knee last year and i got back into painting to pass the time when on crutches. Since then i've painted mainly for fun and had the odd game of EA with some old wargaming buddies. Thinking of joining the local Truro club to pick up a few more games, but not sure if anyone plays 6mm sci-fi down here? Anyone in Cornwall ?

Annoyingly i used to live in Bristol for a couple of years but knew nothing of the scene up there back then... :-(

there are a few players in cornwall if memory serves... not sure who though.

Brilliant comparison photos, I'm scribbling notes now.
