Perhaps a better background could have been chosen

That's been said before.
Apparently it was the only place in his store without glare or a window.

I realise that this will sound very arrogant of me, but no, i don't think that this is a good – in-fact i stopped watching after 3 minutes. Why do people keep making hobby videos that are 10x longer than the time required to convey their content? More importantly, WHY is the camera-man in that video shaking the camera all over the place when filming a single, static, person in a controlled environment? His points may well be delivered in a measured and well spoken way, but i do not personally think that video is the medium to communicate them – unless everyone really has dissolved into a mush of web2.0-rea that cannot concentrate on anything that is not a poorly made video.

… sorry, my rage against most (ok, all, i have yet to see a good one, im not singling this guy out especially) hobby videos has been building for some time. Either that or make indexed/bookmarked videos that tell me what happens when so that i do not have to watch 5 minutes of inane badinage at the start of each clip to get to 2 minutes of actual content, which in a forum post i would have cntrl+f'd to in seconds.

What I watched of this was tacky in the extreme-this is not an ad, perhaps not a paid ad (due to the background).
Unfortunately, as with most of the videos from the mini games people featuring this particular individual, I found this to be unwatchable.

I fully understand GW's position on internet retailers. They pretty much are just middle man mooches, making money off someone elses innovation in product and manufacturing. As middle men their primary concern, naturally, is their own bottom lines (perhaps, thus the unpaid ad).
GW wants to promote it's own products and is choosing to do this through it's own retail network.
Can't really fault them there.
(however, GW didn't seem to mind independents until they decided to expand/rely on it's own retail network).

It's kinda hard for me to say that; considering due to GW policies of not stocking a 'full' back catalog of Epic, nor distributing it I ended up getting most of my miniatures via Ebay.
It really didn't end up saving me much money considering the time I spent bidding/looking, and the postage fees for one small lot after another, etc. I think when all would be added up I would have probably paid the same or less if GW would at least sell a FULL range of Epic. But that isn't the case is it?

What GW can't explain away is why is Australian retail pricing nowhere close to the currency exchange rates???? They have a legit desire to be the primary distributors of their own products in a market, but why soak the Australians so bad?

Does Australia have some excessive VAT/import/dock tax that accounts for this??

GW did explain this, and Romeo on 40K Radio also explains what the deal is, and I have heard a couple of Australian gamers also voice the same point. Apparently, the cost of running a store in Australia is considerable more expensive than running the same type of store in the US. If Australian retailers sold at equivalent US pricing, they wouldn't make enough profit on the product to stay in business. As much as we think GW is insane for doing things like this, the fact that Australians could buy models cheaper in the UK and have them shipped for less than buying in their own countries was killing brick and mortar game stores in Australia. This reasoning also explains the embargo.

Now, take that as you will. Could GW be doing it to give their own B&M stores equal footing in the local markets? Maybe. Whatever the case is, this is a hobby and we play with toys. If it is too expensive to continue, you will either quit, limit your purchases, or make the sacrifices necessary to continue playing.

That's complete bollocks -US stores costs (of running them) may be a lot less than Australian costs but US costs are also a lot less than UK costs which are comparable to australia. GW has just been taking advantage of historic exchange rates

There is a reason gw have been highlighting oz as theirmost profitable region for the last couple of years in their financial reports...

That's right E&C.
We are more profitable here because our dollar is MUCH stronger than it has historically been (and looks like it will stay high for a while yet). GW make more money even though their sales here might not have increased.

Mate,

Thats because their mark up is 250%. I had a mate who was a store manager, he used to buy stuff and use his staff discount, GW were still making 100% profit on the sale. There prices in Aus are rediculous. I dont buy at all in Aus, I buy all my gear overseas, with our dollar the way it is, it is far more cost effective, even with shipping costs. More often than not I will make a large order with friends to take advantage of group shipping or FW free over 250GBP orders.

Cheers
Aaron

Just a bit of thread necromancy to report on this:Games Workshop's Finecast Transition Nine Months On

Quote:
So going forward this resin will replace white metal won’t it?
Yes that’s right. We do have a backlog of things like Battle Fleet Gothic and Blood Bowl with metal miniatures that we still manufacture, that we still make available, that are made in metal. A lot of times those things don’t come in packaging now. We still make them, because we think they are cool, but they might come in a baggie or a plain white box.

Well then, is it safe to say that you are phasing those metal minis out?
Yeah, I think that Citadel Finecast is definitely the future of what we are doing with those special figures.

Presumably this means that anything that can't be cast in resin is going to be withdrawn.

Or Warmaster. I am probably due for a panicked "mass-buy-in-case-things-disappear" order, anyway.
