Thanks for all the big thumbs up guys! :)

Regarding the scariness of Nids - they are one of the hardest races to paint, I am trying to get their 'feel' down, trying to work out the best way to paint them. Still practicing on those guys!

Do you paint using layers, such that the problematic carnifex could be revised? I think he's the only thing keeping this "very good" artwork from the "mind staggeringly great" category.

I painted this pic to celebrate 40,000 pageviews on my DeviantArt account! :D

Desecration
Image
They arrived too late. Already the pall of smoke up ahead was under-lit by flames.

De-bussing from their Rhino, they were met by withering fire from the shrine and it's surrounding statues. Muzzle flash flickered up ahead and solid rounds ricocheted off the vehicle's armour. The sister superior led sisters Gwendolyn and Berenice towards the gardens surrounding the shrine, clearing the unholy as they went.

All three were bought down by a cultist who ran at them from behind a shattered statue; detonating a bag of tube charges.

Sister Ophelia worked her way up the road with sisters Jerusha and Selah in support. The cultists had set up a stubber in the ruins of the shrine. Just as Jerusha and Selah had cut down a frantic counter-charge by a dozen cultists, they were mown down.

Ophelia desperately threw a frag grenade into the ruins, putting the gun out of action.

Sister Ophelia charged up the steps, gunning down the last of the cultists. Tears stung her eyes as she saw the ruin before her.

It was too late; already the shrine was in flames.

Already it had been desecrated.

Very nice. Now that is a nice picture.

For some reason, I really like how well you have done the hair - strange I know, but it is well done.

wow! Awesomely atmospheric picture and cool story too.

As for my usual armchair criticism - the light play on her left forearm (on the right in the pic) and bolt pistol makes it look like her arm is pivoted back from her elbow even though her body motion should have it swinging forward. The angle of her wrist and the shape of the armour at the wrist junction also contributes. Given that her arm isn't likely to be pointing straight down, perhaps some angling of the light (and shadow on the opposite side) would help? It just struck me as odd and a little jarring until I figured out what was going on. As always, easier to criticise than do, but hopefully it's helpful :)

Frogbear - Thanks. I wanted her hair to look a mess after being in combat. A lot of GW art shows Sisters with perfect hair!?

mattthemuppet - Cheers. And thanks for the con crit too mate. :)

TuffSkull - Thanks mate. The tabard says something along the lines of "The Emperor gave thanks for 40,000 pageviews".

CaptainSenioris - Cheers sir, I'm pretty chuffed with it too! :D

madd0ct0r - I enjoy it too! :)

As always a pleasure to look at this work.

A lot of the other critiques on the 'nids made sense to me -- some are a bit to cartoonish, some work well. In general, I think the ones that work well are less distinctly outlined, which leads me to wonder if the trick with them is to make sure they are a bit fuzzier and more indistinct. Technically, they might demand a kind of pencil-shading to avoid the sharp lines.
