I'm stuck in my ways of basing 6mm minis the same way I do 28mm, assemble stands of minis, glue sand to base, water down pva and add detergent to seal the sand down once dry, undercoat model, paint base before anything else (all that drybrushing is messy as hell) then paint the models afterwards...

...I've seen pics of people gluing models to lollipop sticks so I'm interested in finding out how other people base (and to a degree, paint) their 6mm models, do you paint on the sprue and base afterwards? what basing materials do you use? If you use something like sand, how do you go about painting it without ruining the paint job on the models themselves? Do you just use flock / static grass and if so, what brands / colours? How do you avoid making your minis look like they're knee deep in basing materials?

And most important of all... do you have example pics of your methods? :)

edit: not to mention how limiting my current methods are, I like to undercoat in black with all that basing material already glued down... who wants to re-paint basing material over a white undercoat? eurgh!

Answers from my personal experience on 6mm infantry:

- I place some double side tape on ice cream wood stick. I remove minis from sprue (when on sprue) and after cleaning flash/mold lines, and place them on the stick:

I undercoat and then I paint them:

Once painted, I glue them on bases (bases have been spray undercoat back before):

As each mini base is to high, I place some wall gap filler on the base with a sculpting tool and a wet brush (wet brush to gently remove gap filler from minis feets):

Then I mix fine sand, wood glue, water and color to add texture to the bases and I apply with a brush (use a wet brush to remove mix from minis). Once dried, I dry brushed the bases:

You can place a few drop of Devlan Mud, Gryphon Sepia or Babad Black GW washes here and there to add more colors on the bases.

For my necrons, I used a different way. I bought some Woodland Scenics fine and medium colored ballast (Thanks to Onyx to share this tip). I mixed some fine one with medium and after applying some wood glue on the bases, I directly added the ballast mix:

Tufts are made by Mininatur/Silflor (short tufts range is great for Epic). They are sold ready to be used, just pick them and glue them on the stands. Different colors are available:

Quite expensive but very very easy to use.

For green flock, after long time search, I finally found the brand GW was using in the past old day to base their epic minis, it's some Javis Premier Range Turf Mid Green or Light Green:

It's some very nice basing material. Just add here and there some small tufts and you'll have a nice base ;)

I usually base my infantry before painting them. It does make them harder to paint, but I can at least use them in a game before they're painted.

Yes, there are mostly EW jump troops but also some DRM ones and few were converted with some SM commanders bitz (bolter, sword and banner)

Which ones were the DRM? I didn't notice them. The commanders?

Sweet paint job by the way...nice work!

yep, commanders are from DRM (I glued a EW jet pack on their back IIRC) and spotters too (there's one spotter per command stand) :)
