looking at the GW sprues, they look more like valhallans than steel legion troops.... so out of all the possible IG troop proxies out there, which ones are the best?

I'm liking the blue werewolf frenchmen with a nice brown scheme (they already have the gas masks) as well as the EW Royal empire dudes, however I'm planning a krieg army and they are a better fit for those guys (I want my many IG armies to be quite distinct...)

does anyone have any suggestions?

As well as the options you listed you also have the GW Siegemasters infnatry, although these are too pricey for my tastes.

Personally for mine I am going to wimp out and simply use the GW plastic infantry. I have already used them in my Valhallan army, but I figured a different paint scheme will be enough to differentiate them. I am going to try a brown scheme trying to paint on gas masks. My eyesight is not yet strong enough post eye op to do anything too fancy.

Plus I already have them assembled, based and undercoated, so it's path of least resistance for me.

Hmm, but they look more like Cadians and Catachans... They aren't SL in my opinion.

personally, i think steel legion and krieg look similar enough to be much of a muchness. one has greatcoats, the other doesnt.

that being said, the DRM empire conscripts have gas masks, they'd do well

You could try sculpting rebreathers on the plastic IG. Aside from what you already mentioned there's nothing else I know of that's close.

Beyond that you could pick another mechanized infantry regiment: Cadian, Jouran, Methuselan and Mordian all have them.

Exodus Wars Empire Conscripts have gas masks ... DRM's Industrial Infantry have gas masks ... http://www.darkrealmminiatures.co.uk/st ... t=2&page=1 As far as SL ... they wear WWII Style German Para Helmets, gas masks ... and a short overcoat ... so Exodus Wars Empire Conscripts may be your best choice ... And use E&C and/or G/W for DKoK ... A differerent paint job makes a big difference ...

Baran Siegemasters look the most like proper Steel Legion Infantry.

After a few test paintjobs, I reckon my blue werewolf cadians make half-decent steel legion troops, they've got the coats and helmets which at this scale I can say just about pass for gas masks....
