Trying to gauge community opinion. How should EpiComp entries be handled:

  • The Older Way
You post on the appropriate thread with your image attached.
  • The Newer Way
You e-mail your image(s) along with what categories they go in to me.
  • The Apathetic Way
You don't really care and think I should decide.

I prefer anonymous submission, simply because in a community as tight as this one, it ensures the entries are judged as much as possible on quality rather than origin.

It's also fun to guess who entered what. :)

Hi,

with gothicomp so far both approaches worked. Anomynous has the problem that a lot people show models on forums/blogs because they are proud of the model.
I feel a tendency coming that this years GothiComp will be the last anomynous one.

However for GothiComp I won't go back to having the images posted in a threat. I think getting them in the mail and then pulling them all into a gallery at the start of the voting is the coolest impact.
With a submission per mail you also have a broader group of people entering. Not everyone takes time to register at a forum.
The key is advertising the competition on several forums (eg warseer/dakkadakka) and then it is better to have mail system then 'hey join my forum'. ;)

This seems to be two separate questions, i would vote for non-anonymous but with:

The Newer Way
You e-mail your image(s) along with what categories they go in to me.

I like seeing all of the images put up at once (as happens the last couple of years), not dribs and drabs in a thread by individuals. Anonymity and method of submission are not mutually exclusive.

I think anonymous submissions is the fairest way, this community whilst very very good, does have it's cliques and rivalries and I think an honest assessment is only possible when you remove possible prejudices..... having said that, some people would be recognisable to most of us anyway.....

Anonymous, but also agree as above, all images posted at once rather than dribs and drabs. It also means that if someone posts a really killer entry, it doesn't discourage the less skilled to enter,

The tighter the community, the less "anonymous" the entries will be regardless of if a name is plastered on them. All artists have their own styles and that makes them pretty easy to pick out. I'm fairly certain that most of us would easily recognize a pic submitted anonymously by Ghurda, Onyx, Apoc, Scream, or WMN. That kinda makes the point of having it anonymous a bit dubious if you aren't really preventing those subconscious biases from knowing who painted a piece :)

sure it does
for one, we cant be sure
for two, there will be ones we dont know
for three, people will make mistakes guessing

saying "several people will probably recognise several people" is not at all the same thing as "every person will recognise every person"

The anonymous thing last year made it much clunkier to enter, and led to people not bothering. I really think we're mature enough here that we don't need it to vote fairly.

Why clunkier?

You mail a picture at given email adress and done with it. What can be more easier than that?

You have more control over image size and making sure people follow the rules if it's through email. It also feels a lot more open to people who aren't on this forum.

I'm not dead-set on anonymity, though I prefer it. I really prefer email though, so it might as well be anonymous too.

The image restrictions on this board are more likely to enforce the image size than e-mail ever would. On your second point...

CS, to entrants have to be a forum account? I thought they did in previous years.

I've got a free prize offers, I'll be posting an update/category announcement sometime this week. Anyone know if Doug at DRM is busy? He hasn't gotten back to me.

I used to prefer and argue for anonymous entries, but I now think the older way was better - posting images in the threads as they were done maintained interest, discussions and awareness and inspired others to enter and I believe we got less entries last year than normal as a result of the anonymous system, therefore I think it should be abandoned.
