Yup, charging in WFB is now basic move speed + 2D6 inches.

So for infantry it's 4"+2d6", craziness.

And it's not alone. That level of randomness has made it into most aspects of the game system.

Heck, the magic phase has been turned into something even more random than the above, if you can believe it. 1st turn magical nuke bombs are not uncommon, but neither are full game magical fizzles uncommon.

WFB is very much a "game" now, not a "wargame".

Agricola, Power Grid and other good games takes exception to your description.

You....think Agricola and Power Grid are wargames?

Sad to hear as I have been looking to give WFB another whirl. 2nd & 3rd ed. were tons of fun!

I'm trying out Mantic Games' Kings of War as a WFB analogue.

It seems to be a WFB type game written more in the style of Epic (Simple rules, fairly predictable mechanics, more interested in tactical complexity than wacky special rules).

The WFB charge doesn't bother me that much in comparison with Warmaster (which I think is a pretty cool game).

It would seem that the randomized charge mechanic just encourages players to use an ablative shield in front of their main line... something to tempt the opponent into an ill-advised charge.

The magi nukes seem more problematic.

I, for one, would appreciate a review once you've had a chance to digest.

Another big change to WFB is that the break test used to rule the game. Basically everything revolved around setting things up so you won combat and the opponent got a very large minus to their break test. Do enough of those and you win the game, even if the enemy doesn't break (due to being undead or daemons). Now, w/ the new rule which I can't recall the name but which says that if you outnumber your opponent significantly you test for break on an unmodified leadership (re-rolling w/ battle standard nearby or using high general's ld if nearby too), you can basically forget about any clever maneuvering and charging. It's all about the big blocks of troops so you are never too outnumbered or never too far from outnumbering your opponent. Add to that the rule about forming 10 wide and fighting w/ all your ranks (or up to 4 ranks perhaps?) and players have lots of reasons to field ever larger armies. Larger armies = more sales. See what GW did there?

I think most people are agreeing it's 15mins actually, think it might be in stated in the rulebook somewhere.

Agreed it says in the rulebook an epic turn is 15 minutes.

And a 40k turn is 5 to 10 seconds.

ahh yes, it dose say - " about 15 min..." and it interestingly also says " 30cm equals about 1km " tho it says the ground scale is "out of kilter" with the scale of the model." kilter? wtf? is that some british term for - not right - or some thing?

its in the blue section of the rule book under movement and terrain.

tho I still firmly disagree that 40k is 5-10 seconds. just dosnt make common sense... but we are talking about Grandma wendy here ::)
