Is there a text-only version of the game rules floating around somewhere? Kindles don't handle pdfs very well, and even an Ipad struggles with the full pdf. I've copied the text from the pdf, but it loses all formatting, so requires a bit of work be readable, wondered if anybody had already done that work.

Or doesn't GW like it if people post the rules on places other than their own site?

GW gets upset. I've not sent the epic rules to my kindle yet but the other ones I've sent look ok.

You could always use the 'handbook' which was text only and essentially the same rules (though I think it is missing the 2008 amendments and the army lists will have some differences)

It's pdf. Though I've actually been updating it to 2010 NetEA erratas etc and doing a word version, so probably could supply text version soonish. Rules done, but stalled on army lists at present due to real life demands, and because my group will be using NetEA armylist docs more which are still in process.

On this topic though, I'm interested in when some kindle type device for myself, but one which can actually handle pdf's annotations etc. Anyone know of such a thing?

I was looking at the Nook from Barnes and Noble....Looks to handle PDF wells. I really wanna know which one will work the best with the Black Library E-Book Formats the best.

So Markconz, you plan on updating the Handbook eh? I like how the Rulebook section has the footnoted FAQ's. Maybe NetERC will do that with the NetEA Docs.

Does Adobe Digital Editions work on that hardware? I've never handled a kindle or whatever myself, but apparently it can be used on most, and reads pdfs as normal.

The black library digital books gives you the file in two formats and they look fine on both Kindle and iPad (ibooks or kindle for ipad).

I'll get the Epic A rules on both platforms and post comments later.

The big problem with pdfs on a normal kindle is the screen size. When you read on a Kindle it usually breaks up lines and paragraphs so the text flows smoothly in whatever font size you want. However, pdfs usually have a 'fixed' page layout. This means you can't break up the text and have to choose between seeing the entire page on the screen at a time (with tiny text) or zooming in and scrolling (which I don't like).

Just tried it as-is on the kindle, and sorta-kinda works if I put the screen in landscape mode. It splits each page into three, two with text and one with the bottom margin with maybe one line of text. It also slows the kindle down to a crawl, but that happened when I opened it on an Ipad on sunday, so I suspect that's more an issue with the pdf than the reader. The Kindle can't read the pdf bookmarks either, so I'm stuck with (sloooooooow) search to find stuff in the rules.

The NetEA SM pdf works a lot better, although the small font is hard to read even in landscape. Not impossible though, but these lists work better if I print out the unit summaries I need anyway. Useful to have if I need to look up something I didn't think I'd need.

I'd say that if you want a Kindle that reads PDFs, the DX version should work. It has a bigger screen, and the software should be optimized for reading PDFs (as opposed to the normal kindle which has a tacked-on pdf reader).

Has anybody else had experience with the GW rule PDFs being unusually heavy on reader hardware?

Huh, my Android phone reads them all fine. The screens to small to usefully read a pdf without hella scrolling, but its responsive, with no jitters or lag.

Right, as others have said the kindle is kinda small for viewing the rules. Sure you can zoom but it's not the most intuitive. Searching wasn't that slow really.

On the iPad I opened it in both ibooks and goodreader. In both its readable without zooming, but with the easy method of zooming its fine.

Of the two the ipad is better, but then its twice as big and more than twice as heavy as the kindle. iPhone is probably the best of both worlds when you need the rules on the move and want to search for items.

I've also got the rules on my windows phone and that works fine for tournament lookups when required.
