Let there be no doubt, we have to do it the hard way ... too many innocents on all sides are at stake. ?We were trained in what is and what is not a war crime, and what they now call a human rights violation. ?And it is going to be a long hard war ...

Yes, you're absolutely right. Terrorism and injustice would end the moment EACH AND EVERY COUNTRY IN THE FACE OF EARTH IS NUKED TO STONE AGE. Assuming not one human being survived.
For the record: I don't like at all the direction this discussion (and several others) are taking. Finger pointing and generalization are both easy. And each and every time either (or both!) have been used in large scale, things have soon become interesting.

Me either. I started this thread on a humour topic.
I choose to keep my thoughts , mostly based on a recent tour during this 'war', private in respect of others.

I take some responsibility for turning this topic and a few others in a direction it should not have gone. ?I'm too close to the topic so I should withhold any other private thoughts as Tas has done. ?I am watching the news as I'm on line so I get influenced by a lot of negative input. ?As I write this there are soldiers carrying a flag draped coffin on the screen. ? So I am ?sorry if I offended anyone ... that is not my intention.

Hi!
Geez, take it easy guys. I understand that most other forums this kind of stuff explodes like gunpowder, but I think we're all bigger than that here. I have never, no matter the topic have felt offended in any way, nor taken offense by anything said here. I think most here are pretty smart cookies and know how to satirize the mutlitude of serious topics of todays world, all in good fun.
I guess we can quit while we are ahead, but I dont think there was much danger to begin with. I have yet to see any poster on this board has too "thin" a skin.

Dont get me wroing, I'm not offended and by any standards this forum is populated by very reasonable and mature people- but some subjects and one's feelings on them stray toward the wrong side of the line for general good feelings
I mean if we can talk about dog poo, dildos and photos of colons then not too much is sacred is it!
I wonder why THIS topic wasnt closed by das Uber-moderator like the others...

I understood the idea of humor and the start of this thread was just that. However, IMO the way it continued started to border on, well, unpleasant. I was not aiming my little outburst at anyone personally.

Again, I have nothing against humor. But dog poo and dildos are so wacky topics everybody understands what's going on. OTOH political discussions have a nasty tendency to degenerate even in the most mature groups like this. And my personal alarms go off when the talk turns to "us" and "them" and the ones who should be eradicated from the face of earth. I am not a history major, or even a gifted amateur for that matter, but I have read about situations where the division got out of hand. And not in one case were the results positive. And please don't get me wrong; I have PERSONALLY fallen into that trap many enough times to be ashamed of myself.

My point exactly. What I meant is that the DIRECTION of the discussions started to worry me and I thought to speak up BEFORE any damage was done. I have seen threads about world politics turn into something unpleasant in enough forums. rec.games.miniatures.historical is one prime example of this as is soc.history.war.misc. And I don't even dare to mention rec.games.miniatures.warhammer.
Well, that was that. I hope I didn't offend anyone or sound too preachy. I can't claim moral high ground over anyone.

Quote (Legion 4 @ 25 2003 Nov.,05:32) | I can't vouch for the veracity of the story, buy I watch a lot of news and never heard anything about it. However, the easiest way to I.D. a unit is what type weapons the troops are carrying. Since most NATO uniforms look generally the same from a distance. The US uses the M-16/M-4, The UK the SA-80, the French the FAMAS, the Germans the G36. BUT, the UK and Aussie SAS use the M16 in the field and the MP5 in Urban enviroments. So I think this is just an amusing story and is in fact just that. US Delta Force and US Generals know the different between the M16 and SA80. I know ... I have worked with US Special Ops units ... | Although weapons do seem a good way to id a soldier, it doesn't always work that easily.
(although I don't think anyone but the Brits use the SA80)
SF units tend to use a wide mix of weapons (more so than regular army units) mainly because of their different role. Generally, being SF they also get to use whatever the hell they want..
Oz SAS were mentioned as using M-16's. They do and they also use AusSteyrs, and a wide range of weapons.
Reminds me of the story from the Falklands where a reporter & crew were filming A4 attacks on the troops dug in on the hills. They were firing blowpipes at the Skyhawks, which invariably couldn't catch them. Then this SAS bloke pops up on the top of the hill and fires a Stinger, bagging a Skyhawk. All this before the US were even issuing them to their own troops!
