Thanks for the comments!

Not much activity today. I undercoated the green stuffed chaos vehicles and cut some models into pieces for Obliterator conversions. The lack of painting opportunities for chaos (green stuff drying, conversion in progress, Otterware in the mail) has "forced" me to start painting Tyranids for a bit (who are "ready to go" in large quantities). Here is the test colour scheme. It looks better at a distance. For text schemes I deliberately paint somewhat "sloppy" to get an idea how the last model in a batch will look like. If that looks good at tabletop distance then it will only get better from there :)

I only painted a single critter to see how the scheme works on infantry.

The highlights on the green carapace are fairly visible in real life but the photo blends them out a bit. I think I am happy with the scheme both in terms of look and "painting speed/mass producability". Comments/suggestions?

My Nid army is relatively modest in size so hopefully I can maintain this style across all models:

Small Critters:
7 Genestealers (+ 1 Broodlord inbound)
8 Gargoyles
7 Hormagants
12 Termagants

Medium Critters:
10 Hive Tyrants
12 Tyranid Warriors
13 Lictors
6 Carnifex
8 Zoanthropes
8 Ravener

Big Critters:
6 Haruspex
9 Exocrine
2 Trygon
9 Malefactors
6 Dactylis

Huge Critters:
2 Dominatrix
2 Hierophants
1 Hydraphant

Other stuff:
2 Synapse Nodes
6 Lesser Nodes
10 Spores

I also have an inbound "tool kit" for a Harridan conversion and some biovores. The force is very light on small critters judging by the battle reports that I read on this forum where "vehicle-Nids" don't seem to appear very often at all.

This is actually one of the two major gripes I have for the EA system, based purely on my "visual" inspection (i.e. not having played a game and just look at batreps): Why are there no tanks in the game? Other than transports, nobody seems to have any vehicles. Here we are in a game system of mighty warmachines, large battles, etc and the kings of the battlefield are individual dudes with lasguns... That just doesn't feel right. Its made even more perverse by the fact that 40k battlefields are (absurdly) choked with tanks (and flyers... on the equivalent patch of a firefight engagement in EA).
My other gripe is the "sideward shuffle assault" that seems to dominate the batrep photos. You know, those assaults where a huge titan is assaulted by infantry on rectangular bases SIDEWAYS. I understand the game benefit of getting more combatants in touch but this just looks dumb. All those guys with lasguns, who shouldn't be able to do f#$k-all to a towering titan in the first place, running in clockwise circles around it until it dies - from overheating of its traverse gyros I guess... I love the basing freedom in EA but the rule designers made a real mistake (in my opinion) when they effectively gave different base choices different impacts on the game. Why not just have a simple definition of how many "engagement points" each level of model has (infantry & vehicles = up to 4 models, war engines = up to XX models)? Wargaming is about suspending disbelief with pretty visuals and this stuff brings it crashing down.

Sorry for the rant... I will focus on painting now :)

The dearth of tanks is caused by a simple fact. Tanks are units that specialize in shooting. Their main focus is to tear the enemy apart at long range. While it is possible to break a unit by shooting alone, it usually takes several units to do so.

E:A is won and lost in assault. Regardless of casualties, regardless of blast markers before the assault, if you lose an assault, you are broken. It takes only one unit to do so. In addition, a unit can assault, then lend supporting fire to potentially multiple additional assaults in the same turn. It can only shoot once. This [supporting fire] is a huge force multiplier that cannot be underestimated.

Tanks therefore are often up close (<30cm) lending supporting fire or prepping with blast markers; therefore they are within engage range of Infantry. Unfortunately, many infantry formations are statistically as good as tanks in FF, and stand a good chance of beating them, regardless of whether they could harm them in shooting.

The sideways shuffle: I have a freind who has modelled his IG in line formation so when they dismount from their Chimaeras, they stand on either side, thus gaining the cover modifier for contacting an AV. While not strictly relevent, it is an example of how to avoud this embarrasing problem. More to the point, a War Engine may only be contacted by 2 units per starting DC. However, with 40mm wide stands, it is virtually impossible to get the 16 stands allowed to contact a Warlord or Great Gargant to fit. Thus the sideways shuffle. The silly look is an unfortunate side effect.

As for paints... awesome as always. Those bugs will look sweet en masse scuttling across the field.

Wow Great stuff.
I like the natural subdued look of the bugs.
I dont understand the 40k Tyranids - Deadliest organisms in the universe - IN PINK! ??
Speaking of Pink. Your chaos look great! How have you painted the pink?
Cheers,
Jim

Would it be possible to use some of your images for the World Eater's supplement modeling guide?

Specifically the berserkers, flesh hounds, terminators and land raider pics?  if you had higher resolution versions that would be great.

Hello

Pink colour: It's two layers of Tentacle Pink (old GW colour) over a black basecoat. Then Leviathan Purple wash (new GW) and finally a very dry drybrush of Tentacle Pink (for the vehicles only). The blue pieces are Ultramarine blue, Leviathan Purple wash and then UM blue drybrush or highlight for larger surfaces. Red claws and such are Mechrite Red, Devlan Mud wash and Blood Red drybrush/highlight.

Photos: Certainly, feel free to use the pics. If you go to my photobucket account you can find larger resolution version of the images. After cropping they are roughly 1000 pixel across. I can't really achieve much more with my 10Mpix camera and still get a good depth of field. Alternatively I could take some really close up macro shots which will be higher resolution but probably won't have enough depth of field to show more than one infantry base in focus. Let me know what you would prefer and I will give it a try.

Painting progress: I have started on the Nurgle Land Raiders and Deathwheel. Finished the Iron Warrior Predators and undercoated the Man-o-War airforce (the ships are done but I have the flyers for each of the fleets left - not really EA but also in my "small scale" bucket).

...Tzeentchian Deathwheel...

That is really cool. Some ideas there I may have to adapt when I get around to doing my own.

Some very nice armies, these.

Quick update:

- finished the Nurgle Deathwheel and Land Raider. Pics later.
- finished the stripes and thus the models for the IW Predator. Pics later.
- assembled a few IW defiler and more green stuff work on bikers, obliterators and dreadnaughts

Progress is a bit sluggish on the EA front because I promised myself to finish up a few half-finished projects on my table first (BFG Eldar fleet, MoW Khorne fleet, MoW Bret & DE flyers to finish those fleets, BB Orc team, Mordheim Orc warband and a few personas). If (IF) I finish those I will allow myself to continue with the latest EA distraction: cityfight terrain. That will be on the priority list after finishing BL, Nids, Eldar and LatD  :_( ... But of course that doesn't stop me from "just laying it out already...":

I don't quite have enough raw material yet so I bought a pile more xmarc and snapdragon buildings. Does anybody have a source of Epic style gothic buildings that are NOT ruined?

cheers
Helge

SO BEAUTIFUL...

Reminds me of the table we built for Games Day a few years ago, but mre fully realized. That one was straight ruins sprues, at least in the city sections.

I know there's been a lot of chatter, on and off, about CADed buildings from various sources. Don't know if any reached fruition. I think Otterman was one of said sources. You could try shooting him a PM.

The bases are 8"x"8", 8"x16", "8"x4" and 4"x4" pieces of MDF (3mm thickness). I cut them myself though you can probably get a lumber store to cut them for you. The "edging" is plastic card with a square "tile" pattern. I am trying to give the impression of a sidewalk made out of slabs. That way I can place the pieces anywhere on a "asphalt grey" background and create instant roads. That's the idea anyhow. We will see how it goes.
