Hello

Thanks for the kind words.

SG: The yellow for all the models (including Bad Moonz) is build up from Iyanden Darksun->Devlan Mud Wash -> Golden Yellow highlights -> Sunburst yellow edging. It would be easier to use a more yellow-ish wash such as Griffon Sephia but that would break the overall "workflow". I use the same three colour and methods for them across all models so that everything is still tied together visually even though each clan is distinct. That means black undercoat, Boltgun Metal drybrush over everything, foundation paint base (Iyanden Darksun, Mechrite Red, Ultramarine Blue), Devlan Mud across everything, highlight "big patches" (Golden Yellow, Blood Red, Ultramarine Blue) and finally highlight "edges/lines" (Sunburst Yellow, Blazing Orange, custom Ice Blue/Ultramarine Blue pot). Not at the level of some of the master painter here but it gives you nice visible highlights at good painting speed.

Holme: Sorry, I don't think I can make an effective army photo. My camera is having a hard time getting even individual clans into focus so the whole army could only be shot at a very long distance (at which point there wouldn't be enough pixel left to show models as more than small points of colour). I will give it a shot when I have completed the display bases for the Orks.

I took some shots of my current Black Legion progress and will post them soon.

cheers
Helge

Here are some progress shots for my emerging Black Legion army. Keep in mind that the models are not yet dullcoated. Basing is also incomplete. I still need to clean up some of the drybrush/wash spillage as well as add static grass. Vehicle bases are also missing. I usually do all these clean up steps at the end of painting an army, just before the final dullcoat. With that disclaimer, here is comes:

As explained earlier, I am building forces for each major god plus undivided Iron Warriors to provide "bulk". In most 3000 point games the force will likely be IW + one god so I am trying to give each god force a distinct "style" (consistent with their god theme).

World Eater (Khorne) Force:
The main retinue uses a mix of models from previous editions including some "modern" Bloodletters to highlight the Khornate nature of the warband. There are more than 8 bases to give me the freedom to pick different leaders. I still have a Daemonprince base to complete the character set (no sorceror for Khorne!). The Rhinos are "coded" to differentiate the special units/characters.

The retinue has 4 berzerker bases as support. I am still converting a Khornate defiler. The theme of the Khornate force is assault so I didn't include Obliterators or Havocs.

Khornate daemons include Bloodletter and Fleshhounds. Like the Daemonprince I am saving the Bloodthirster for last as a painting reward.

I am using Juggernaughts as "Biker" proxies. The lord is from the Warmaster range. A bit bigger but suitably daemonic.

The Terminator provide more assault power. I am still waiting for good Raptor proxies :)

Finally some Land Raider for a bit of armoured support with some simple chaotic conversions that hopefully don't disrupt the "martial" theme of the Khorne style.

Deathguard (Nurgle) Force:
The Nurgle theme is "slow and steady" so I tried for a corresponding mix of units. The core retinue is a mix of models with all character options (daemonprince saved for last). The Rhinos are coded.

I used Ork Stormboyz as proxy for Plague Marines, thinking that the rocket packs would look like gas tanks. Not too sure about this so I might have to go over them with green stuff a bit.

Nurgle daemons are just the Plaguebearer (GD still waiting for painjob as above).

Nurgle Terminators, Deathwheel, Decimator and some Land Raider are currently in the green stuffing stage. Some wip:

I will post Slaneesh and Tzeentch a bit later.
Note on the Nurgle Deathwheel, I ran out of "yellow" Green Stuff towards the end so the mix biased towards bluish :) Bought more GS today as well as what feels like a metric ton of fender washers (to base the remaining Eldar, LatD and Squat models as well as make more bases for the Chaos vehicles that don't have any yet).

These are a very cool idea.  :agree:

I hate to suggest it after painting, but maybe cut the tips of the rockets off the Plague Marines? That may make them look more like holding tanks. The bodies are spot on though. Good call.

SG: Cutting off the tips is a great idea. I will do that. Fixing the painjob is trivial.

Emperor's Children (Slaneesh) Force:
Unlike Khorne and Nurgle this is supposed to be more of a shooting force. The core retinue is the same mix (again, DP on hold). The Rhinos are supposed to have something resembling warp amplifiers on top. The "boss Rhino" has a bit from my 40k Eldar box.

Support comes from some Noise Marines with "big speaker Rhinos"

and some Havocs with daemonically possessed Rhinos (some old WFB bits). The Havoc base is a blend of Noise Marine, 1st ed Chaos Missile Launcher and new Chaos Heavy Bolter models.

Daemonettes (GD held back as reward)

Beast of Slaneesh are the riders with a (simple) converted lord. The retinue daemon prince from the Warmaster range came with a second Slaneesh model that I am going to paint up as a more chaotic leader for the riders.

I don't really have any dedicated Black Legion vehicles/warmachines for the Slaneesh force because I am sitting on a huge pile of Slaneesh Knights of all types. I guess those go into the LatD list but I can use them as proxies for Defiler/Feral Titans for this force as well.

Note for all chaos models: As with the Orks, I am planning to add decals to the little banners. I do all the decals for an army at the end so there are still missing.

Thousand Sons (Tzeentch) Force:
On the spectrum from assault to shooting Tzeentch will be on the extreme shooty end. The retinue is the same style as all the other god-focused retinues with a mix of models and "coded" Rhinos.

Thousand Sons are based on the old edition Thousand Sons models, though some of the head dresses have broken off. I might have to make plastic card head dresses at some point. For now this is good enough.

Tzeentchian havocs. The Rhino bits are WFB Tomb King banner pieces.

Flamers

Disc rider with converted lord

I have finished the green stuff work on a Tzeentchian Deathwheel and am currently processing a bunch of dreadnoughts/obliterators in Tzeentch style.

More pics to come when I make some painting progress. I will add pics of the Iron Warriors when I get (and paint) their Nashorns.

You have some awesome ideas

Consider your works of art as one of my main examples of what I aspire to paint and model my legions up as.
