Hi all.

Finally started painting epic minis! yay!
My first army is going to be Dark Angels, how original.

Anyway, got a couple of tactical stands and a rhino done, and I was about to base them in scorched brown/desert yellow sand, but I noticed that the figure tends to disappear in the dark base (I use a darker green than the usual Dark Angels Green).
I did a couple more tests with a lighter brown, but it's quite close to the bronze bits on the mini, and a grey base, which is the one I'm leaning to atm, although I fear Deathwing won't look too nice on grey.

What do you guys suggest?

Colours are a bit off in the first pic, it's the scorched brown/desert yellow one)

2 works best with the colors you have.

Snow might work quite well, or desert.

I agree with option 2. Snow could look nice as well.

Good basing is important to the look of an epic model as the base to model ratio is much higher than with 30mm. None of the three you have done is jumping out at me as looking right with the model somehow. I have a few alternative suggestions you might like to consider:

Graveyard Earth; it's my favoured choice for earth bases, particularly for dark coloured models where you need something to lighten up the overall look. It's gives a very neutral, natural, earthy look. I did my Raven Guard with a heavy drybrush of Graveyard Earth over black and then a very light drybrush of bleached bone on top.

Or possibly a light sandy desert base? I did this with desert yellow, heavy drybrushed with Rotting Flesh and the Rotting Flesh with a little white in.

Or a really left-field suggestion but possibly Martian style reddy-orangey dust could contrast well with the green? (though I may have gone a little OTT in the orange-ness on this one), this was made of a mix of 3 Mig rust weathering powders.

Thanks all!

I'm no sure about snow, as it's the one I plan to use for my IG, and I'd like for all armies to have different bases (it'll help tell them apart when playing, too).

Glyn, I'd give your suggestions a go as I think you're right, none of my options is optimal: the photos didn't come out too nice (all the drybrush on the tank has gone missing, for instance), but in real life colour number 2 is too close to the bronze one, so everything feels monochrome.

Of all problems I though I will face with 6mm, basing wasn't really one I was expecting!

With 6mm basing is key to making a standard paint job go BLAM!

@Glyn: Loving the mech titan/knight/whatever. Sweet!

Thanks! It's a Forge Knight (a construction/repair variant of a Knight-suit) and the first model of an Adeptus Mechanicus army I'm working on (which will have 6 of them). It won the conversion competition of this years EpiComp too, which I was pleased about.

My stupid brain is making me think about a metal accessory sprue with clamps and other such thingies for conversions like this.

P.S. - Sorry for the threadjack. I prefer a contrast between bases and the mini - go for either of the two on the right.

Consider that idea Warmaster Approved!

PS PS sorry about derailing the topic further
