Can it be done? Possibly.

Should it be done? Definitely not. Sometimes 40k is all we have to go on. It shouldn't be the be all and end all, but it should guide our hand in the right direction.

Ultimately, I've talked to 40k players who've been interested in Epic, but have read this forum and seen very eliteist talk about how "we don't want their sort messing around in our game system" and it's put them off playing Epic.

Which ain't cool.

Haven't you referred to 40K as a kid's game about a hundred times?   :p

I have... but in doing so I imply that kids grow up, and when they grow up they should be welcomed into playing the adults' game, not turned away by reading open hostility.

I call it a kids' game (because it is), not a stupid badly designed game (which it isn't, but which some forum members often imply it to be).

What bothers me most though is if people use 40k to LIMIT what can be done in Epic, saying we can't do this or that because 40k doesn't mention it. I think this really limits creativity both in terms of developing sensible rules and units, but even more so if someone wants to create something a bit unusual like an all ogryn army or whatever. Keeping within the spirit of the universe is one thing, Fluff-lawyering another. It IS a bit universe after all.

Very good point, Warmaster. I hadn't thought about it that way, but I definitely agree.

I made my initial comment tongue in cheek, but just to follow up, calling it a "kid's game" IMO sounds more elitist than a "poorly designed game".  The former implies that when they grow up to be big people they can play a real game, whereas the latter is simply more critical.

But, hey!  I'm on your side.  I don't like 40K and it holds ZERO appeal to me mechanically.

A lot of the new stuff in 40k is rubbish, some of its good, and the redesigned models are often interesting, we dont need to 'chase' 40k but neither should we hide from its changes.

I also agree with the above comments on micro management: the new Trygon varient (Magnoc?) is interesting but probably only warrants a few tweaks if it needs including at all.  The Lictor variant can probably be ignored as well.

I like the idea of an Epic unit being the 'average' of a 40k one: most Space Marine Tactical squads include missile launchers, so that's what is represented in Epic, many Space Marine characters have power weapons, so that's what they have in Epic.  Having separate rules for all the different chimera turrets seems a bit OTT.  I'm pretty sure this is what Jervis says in the rulebook FAQ? I don't have it to hand, but I think it's a good ethos.

Mawloc, is close enough in play style to the Trygon to effectively *be* a Trygon at Epic scale.

The Death Leaper is a Special Character, AFAIK.

My bad, I meant the Venomthrope.  I took one look at the picture and assumed it was a Lictor variant.  The clue's in the name really, Venomthrope.

I claim mercy on the fact people are throwing nasty stuff at me at work, and that it's friday.

The Venomthrope is the smaller, more family friendly version of the Malanthrope... it has very similar game rules, a similar design aesthetic, but doesn't have the lumpy shapes of devourerd people pressing against its external guts. It's definitely a relative, anyway. :)

All the better for the Malanthrope to eat you with, clearly!

actually i started playing epic because i liked the 40k universe and figs., but not the 40k game. so reading coments that were critical of 40k on these boards actually got me interested in playing epic. That said i really enjoy when new models become available in 6mm based on whats new in 40k and am very glad we have a common background to draw ideas from.

The Malanthrope is extremely venomous, it has a special rule for the toxins it produces.
