These infantry are being done fast and so are not particularly neat... |
Yeah, go on. Hit me harder.  When I do minis slowly and carefully they don't look half as good.  OTOH you are not quite able to beat me in grumbling...

Very nice TS. Are those infantry base coated and then a single drybrush? How many layers to you add to 'standard infatry'?
Good luck with the health issues, keep me informed.

The darker ones are:
black undercoat.
Drybrush graveyard earth
elf flesh for flesh
Codex grey helmet
Snot green gun
Catachan green kit with camo green highlight.
The Lighter ones followed the same system but got a second drybrush of dessert yellow.
How many layers for my standard infantry? Well, if you dont mean these IG (in which case I guess I just answered above!), it varies greatly.
My SM force for E:A is the simplest army I've painted. White undercoat, Blue wash mix, white & metals.
My Ork test pieces ready for my E:A force are spray white, spray yellow, thinned orange/brown wash, dark green wash for skin & a few details.

So that means that the little guys great coats have a black undercoat with a single drybrushed layer on top only? I only ask because I am particularly impressed with this, and it makes the unit for me (along with the green guns).

Yup, one drybrush straight over the black undercoat. 
I found that drybrushing _up_ the model gave the best result & was still fast. I could drybrush against the grain on all areas for best effect, but that takes 3 times as long & upwards gave almost the same result!.
As for green guns - I dont rememer ever painting a IG trooper that didnt have a green gun. Any ideas on how to use this method to make good looking Steel Legion troopers? Have you been painting any Steel Legion, other than the tanks, for Fanatic Tuff?

A week or so ago I was having a think about doing some of my IG sprues up as Steel Legion, and was thinking about colour schemes.. I decided that if I did, for the basic troopers I would undercoat black, paint them Bestial Brown and then give them a fairly heavy brush over with Bubonic brown for that nice yellowy colour.. then a light highlight with a little Bleached bone, paint details and your done...

Nice idea, and it fits well with the troops from the Armageddon Codex, and from the other places Steel Legionaire turn up! (Seems to be everywhere nowadays, IG Codex, WD's etc.)

Just finished reading thru this long thread... great stuff Tuffskull. I'd like to see these guys in a battlereport at some stage too.
For my Imperial guard I wanted something very quick as well, and decided on the following:
1. Codex grey whole model.
2. Drybrush fortress grey.
3. Drybrush space wolves grey lightly.
4. Black in bits.
5. Bestial Brown drybrushed snakebite, for stowage.
6. Drybrush metallics over tracks weapons etc.
Worked fairly well, I'll try to get some pics up at some stage. Annoyingly I need lots of individual vehicles to bring the force up to EA specs. I will have to do a big order soonish.

I'd go Undercoat black, Snakebite basecoat, bubonic drybrush.
I'm actually very intruiged by the variety one can achieve at such a pace of painting & am tempted to spend some time today trying different schemes. Day 21, Monday 10th November
Well lads, its not been a good few days for the project I'm afraid.
My doc's have had a field day with tests over the weekend - as mentioned simple colds can trigger big trouble with me & they wanted to track everything in case something does go wrong. So that was fun.
However, Saturday night did hail one of the best Nights in the Venture Scout Calender. 60-80 of us (varying throughout the night) going to a firework show, then on to a one night camp with more drinking, singing, joking, laughter & lack of sleep than should really be allowed outside a University Freshers Ball. Old members come back from uni's around the country for it. I Couldnt miss that now could I ? ?
Combined with a couple of trips down the pub with various people & lots of Rugby to watch, a bad weekend for painting.
A quick update on what has been done:
Last 3 Manticores, 3 Heavy trucks (GZG) & second Lightning have all had the brown stages done.
Finished off my first platoon of Infantry, bases need highlights, I'll post pictures when they're 100% done.
I've cleaned up all the infantry for the force now & re-based them (they were blu-tac'd in place, they're now glued) which took a suprising amount of time.
I've also trimmed all the stuff I got from FW with te exception of the Stormblades (missing parts, might be replaced) & have cleaned them up for painting.
Well, thats it. I must be off to work, but hopefully I'll get something more productive done tonight and at least finish off the bases on the infantry & get some pics up!

Day 22, Tuesday 11th November
Well, I'm afraid the least happened once again.
I got the bases finished on the infantry platoon & added the highlights to their green kit (which I'd forgotten previously!), but that was all.
However, I do have some pics this time around so slightly more interesting for the general viewers ?

Those are F/W's, Chris, got'em in my War Room ! And T/S the Desert color scheme is the way to go. Most of my IG are Gray, but I decided long ago that all my F/W IG are Desert Troopers ... whoever said the media has no influence over the masses !  I can say that because, I've run Infantry Ops in jungle, desert, temperate and winter conditions and know what Grunts & AFVs look like "for real" in those environments ...
