WH40k's force to space ratios are ridiculous.  Given that GW wants to keep miniature sales up, I'd make sure to push Stalingrad-style (or Guadalcanal style) games, where limited sight ranges tend to minimize units ability to control space.

Cellars, multi-level buildings, rooftops... etc.  Cool stuff.

... But I guess that means Necromunda?

I'm pretty much with E&C on this one. Business-wise it makes sense for GW to have it's most immediately visually appealing game as one that kids will enjoy. Kids like removing half and army in a turn. The only changes I would make would be to simplify the frankly bafflingly overcomplicated rules, to make it even more kid friendly.

The people I feel sorry for are those who still think 40k is a serious game for adults, and so write tactica and go to 40k tournaments etc. I really can't understand them at all.

What annoys me, however, is how over the last couple of years GW has been steadily ruining warhammer fantasy. A few years ago this was a really good game, and was even pretty balanced between most armies (as long as you didn't try to break them TRC style). It was a game of manouver, flanking, baiting and fleeing, i.e. a tactical challenge. Unfortunately someone decided that it wasn't selling well enough so they started ramping up the power of the armies, particularly the heroes, to a daft degree. Now there are so many characters that can just charge in and win against anything that the tactical manouver side of the game is largely gone.

Heh.  Sounds like the old "wizardhammer" days when I first started playing WHFB - whoever has the highest level wizard wins; if both sides have level 4 wizards, the one who dies first loses.

I sold all my stuff and didn't look at it again for 10 years (at which point I acquired 2 1/2 armies which have seen exactly 3 games between them... :sulk: )

THe biggest problem I've found with 40k isn't the characters. Most of them can be dealt with in one way or another. THe biggest issue I've found is the ranges of weapons and movement speed of models.

I guess movement speed I can handle, but having weapons that can shoot from one board edge to the other on turn one or move 12 inches and be in range of the entire board is rediculous. It means you have no tactical options other than sit and shoot or ocassionally move to take an objective, though since those can be deployed in your own deployment zone with half your army sitting on them, it really only amounts to needing to take a single other objective to win.

Prep-painted models is the way to go then I imagine?

Nah, GW has to keep the hobby side of things to make GW gaming acceptable to parents.

Otherwise their kids are just paying hundreds of pounds on a game of toy soldiers.

I'd bet GW makes solid money on hobby supplies & there are plenty of players who are myopically stuck on GW products.  The whole idea that you can personalize a standard model is definitely a core part of GW's games.

That being said, there is certainly room for a line of pre-painted pre-assembled models for those players who are not inclined to work with paints & hobby tools.

Pre painted models? That would be commision work then ;-) DOn't go making GW steal my contracts!!!

A little while ago EdgarSan showed me some calculations based upon 40K's ground scale, the maximun movement rate of a rhino and the speed of a modern AFV over rough ground:
A game of 40k takes place on a piece of ground roughly the size of a a football pitch and - based upon how quickly a rhino can cross the length of the board - is over in approximately 5.5 seconds. Infantry can run at speeds approaching 25mph.

I would leave Wh40k as is and would produce a supplement for "Advanced Warhammer 40.000" which would be basically a whole new game with mature rules.

40K has ceased being a skirmish game but IMHO should return to skirmish level and get rid of IgoYouGo in favor of Epic style order counters.  We have actually played this way before and it vastly improved play and changed the style of play.  But I really don't care what they do with 40K now because I am done with GW core games.

I tend to look at W40k as having a few cool models but playing wise I like it only as skirmish element of Epic/BFG campaign.

Definitely a light hearted "lets put some cool models on the table and roll some dice" sort of game. Would have no interest in playing it as a more serious competition styel game.

Cheers

James

I have to agree. The rules are also needlessly ambiguous (when a power gamer reads them), and caused so many arguments that we spent 6 hours on our first game of it. Realism is not 40Ks specialty, and it has been loosing a what little it had ever since 4th edition rolled around. The reintroduction of movement values for everything would go a long way towards fixing this, along with fixing LoS, what weapons can hurt what, etc.

I stopped playing 40k after 4ed hit the shelves. IMO, the whole thing should be scrapped and rebuilt from scratch - it's a 70's era game engine with tons of crap tacked and spot-welded on, with parts falling off and being re-tacked with every new issue of WD. It's no longer a game - it's just a marketing engine to sell models - and certainly not good for a competition-oriented game.

Best bet would be to use another system (FAD, Chain Reaction/5150, Forge of War) with your GW models, since the only future changes to 40k are going to be ones that affect your purchasing habits (in their favor) or burn you out of the game completely.
