I didn’t stay in Wakefield on the Saturday night so missed out on the social side of things, but the drive home allowed me to think about where I was going wrong and what I needed to do to try and bring some pride back to my orks. I decided to do an un-orky thing and play the patient game with them and not try to be so aggressive in the first two turns, also I had been placing my objectives wide apart against my opponents in the first three games and then not getting forces to them at the end of the games. I had originally thought of copying the Marine tactic of picking up previously used formations and redistributing them. Having lost so many landas on the first day, I changed my mind.

First game of the second day was against Kev and his Eldar. We have had some titanic battles in the past and this promised to be just as difficult, Kev was playing with a Warlock and two formations of Falcons with Firestorms as his air cover so if I could whittle these down I was confident that things would go my way. Following the ‘Rug Eldar Set Up Protocol ™’, Kev found a piece of terraine and set up most of his army behind it. To prevent me from moving all of my fast units up to support my air assaults he also strung two formations of scouts across the mid-line of the table.

The new cautious me, then spent the first turn ground attacking the scouts, well away from the eldar air cover and then pocking shots at the Falcons. One blitz-brigade  managed to break a formation of Falcons, but were left exposed for the start of the second turn. Kev preceded to win the roll off and then to both of our surprises had to expend three activations breaking them. This left me with the idea opportunity to air assault a mounted guardian formation intermingled with the broken falcons. Guardians stuck in Wave Serpents and orks shouting at them destroyed the falcons and left the farseer and a guardian stand remaining. I still couldn’t land a killer blow, but things were in the ascendency for once. End of turn three I still had one of my landas loaded and ready to assault. The only real target to try and win the game was the Aspect Warhost (7 Dark Reapers & Shining Spear Autarch) that was sat on overwatch by his blitz. After much goading and almost falling for the green mist, I pulled back from assaulting and fired at a another unit instead. Fourth turn allowed me to concentrate on the Aspects and suppress them before throwing in the air assault to win the game 2-0.

Final game of the tournament was against MarkH and Eldar again. Being buoyed from my last result I dived in again. I felt that I had to be a bit more aggressive from the start in this battle than against Kev’s Eldar as Mark was playing with two Aspect Warhosts (Warp Spiders & Swooping Hawks) both of which have large zones of engagement and could wreck my smaller ground formations. Plus I was facing two Void Spinners. Mark will have to comment on his placement, but they were placed on opposite flanks. I felt that I had to neutralize these to protect my small formations and allow me to group closer together in mutual support. One Spinner was air assaulted whilst the other was taken out by a lucky ground attack and critical. We both knocked formations off each other with Mark taking out two landas by breaking them when they were on the ground within 15cm of his forces. The game was stopped at the end of the third turn with time running out, although we would both have had chance to win the game in the fourth we would have probably end up drawing. Victory points were +125 to me so under our scoring system a complete draw.

Thanks again to all my opponents and with one win, one draw & three loses, I ended up bottom of the pile for the first time in a tournament. A great couple of days and a ‘must try harder for myself’. I’m already plotting my revenge for open war.

Thanks to everyone for a great weekend and 5 fun games :agree:

@ Dave B.
I was actually starting to feel a little sorry for you with the amount of poor rolls you made through out the game.
Just not quite sorry enough to let you re-roll them though :Ikonforums:

Yep, only one of the 3 assaults that really hurt was a long shot. It wasn't as though your dice were stellar either, just your normal above average  :p
