Hello all

Well, between moving to and back from France, having a baby, and moving twice in the space of a year, I've not been able to make an Epic tournament since 2006  :sigh:

It's great to see that there is an ever growing programme of Epic tourneys around the country though.  Unfortunately I can't make any this year - and due to family commitments I can't do two-day tournaments, and can't quite justify travelling a great distance to get to a trouney either.

So I must admit it is with a few selfish reasons  :;): I've been thinking about the possibility of another Epic tournament, a one-dayer, based somewhere in the East of England.  To that end, I just thought I'd put some feelers out regarding the following issues:

- Firstly - how many players would most likely attend?  If the event was held in, say, Cambridgeshire or Northants, it would be near enough to London and the Midlands for a great swathe of players to attend.  As I live in Suffolk, it wouldn't be all that far for me to travel, either  :p

- Secondly - when in the Epic UK calendar could such an event fit in?

- Finally - where would the tourney be held, and what venue?

I must admit I don't have many ideas for the latter two, hence I'm putting this idea forth here.

Anyway, just interested to see if other players here think such an event is viable, thanks for looking and for any suggestions!

Might be a little far from Cardiff but possibly.

I recommend going for one in any of the months that don't currently have an epic tournament - see the Epic-UK calender.

Maybe some one the Epic-uk chaps who organise their tournaments might be able to advise?

Good to see the UK tournament scene expanding

Interesting to realize that New England and the U.K. are roughly the same size geographically:  Glasgow>London=Bangor, Me. to New London, CT.

Of course we don't get many folks from Bangor for the Northeast tournaments.

At the moment the calendar for next year is-

January - Bristol Winter Warmer - 1 Day - Man of Kent+Bristol Vanguard
February - Full Scale Assault - 1 Day Mansfield - EPICUK
March
April
May - Open War - 1 Day Nottingham - EPICUK+1st Company Veterans
   - WPS Club Challenge - 2 Days Liverpool - EPICUK+WPS
June
July
August - Britcon -3 Days Manchester - EPICUK+BHGS
September
October - Open War - 1 Day Nottingham -EPICUK+1st Company Veterans
November - EPICUK GT - 2 Days Mansfield - EPICUK
December

The spring OW has unfortunately moved to May due to the dates GW could offer WHW so will probably be very close to the CC.

Other possible events are-
BOTC - Flame on have mentioned including epic
London - in June the last 2 years
Into the Breach - EPICUKs 3rd tourney - probably moving from wakefield

Would be great to have another tourney within easy reach of London. There's plenty of London based epic players who would probably attend.

Into the Breach will be in September next year.

If you are looking for a date which you can keep year on year out (to provide consistency) I would recommend March or July. Yeah I know July is right in the middle of school holidays but with:

Jan - Winter Warmer
Feb - Full Scale Assault
Mar -
Apr - Usually Open War
May - WPS CC
Jun - London
Jul -
Aug - Britcon
Sep - Into the Breach
Oct - Open War
Nov - EPIC UK GT
Dec - To close to Christmas

There isn't alot of space.

Also if you need any help with any questions:

- How much should I charge for a 1 day event?
- How much should I pay for the hall / trophies?
- Where should I hold the event? (though Northampton sounds like a good plan as it's close to the M1)

Please email EPIC UK and we will try to help as best we can (www.epic-uk.co.uk). Also we will be delighted to market your event through our mailing list, calendar and forum threads.

On our website (www.epic-uk.co.uk) we also have a tournament rules pack for a 3 game (1 day) tournament. Plus we have a link to all of the legal tournament army lists to date plus EPIC UK's tournament Space Marine army list (legal in all current UK tournaments) that you are free to use.

Seriously any questions at all please contact us.

Good luck

Thank you

Perhaps you might consider Milton Keynes as well as Northampton, because Mephiston and others may be able to scout out suitable locations. Best bet is usually church halls, community centres, possibly hotel function rooms. Remember you are going to need a lot of room - in London we have a space that is approximately 15' x 35', and are cramped getting 10 tables in.

Finally the major question is cost. Most people will have to travel to the venue, typically at least 75-150 miles each way and often by public transport (trains). This can add £20-£60 to an event on top of possible accomodation (£35-£55), all of which mean we need to keep the cost of the actual event to a minimum if possible. If you assume £10-£20 maximum per entrant and include the cost of trophies/prizes (£50+), you will quickly realise you need a minimum of 8-10 people, which still only allows you to pay the venue £50-£150 though this can be mitigated slightly if the place sells food and drink (and possibly accomodation) to a 'captive audience'.

All the best and good luck with the planning.

Cambs or Northants would be fine with me!

I *think* Northampton GW has a gaming room that may be available for hire, never been but I think it used to have one. I did check on the GW site but they don't mention this on their shop summary anymore.

If your playing at a club firestorm would there be any chance of using their venue?

Thanks everyone for your comments and advice.

Matt, it would be great to have Epic UK on board as I have no idea what I'm doing, ha!

@ Ginger, if anyone can think of any where that would be a suitable venue, according to the considerations you advise, I'd be grateful to hear any suggestions!

Otherwise, I may well go with Mephiston's suggestion and enquire at GW Northampton.

If your playing at a club firestorm would there be any chance of using their venue?

I have considered this, but I'm not sure it'd work that well as car parking at our venue is an issue, as well as it being a little awkward to find (even though it's quite central to Bury St. Edmunds); not to mention availability of food/refreshments - it's in a scout hut, and there aren't really any facilities nearby for food.  So players would definitely have to bring their own lunch & refreshments.

In terms of size, I don't think it'd be too small for a one-dayer, providing there was a limit of about 16 players.  I could enquire though - if it falls to me to arrange this event, having it on my home turf, so to speak, might make it easier...

Watch this space!

I would/would not attend based entirely on whether or not i have the cash/time off nearer to the date; it's what i have to do for every tournament anyway!

I too have been a absent from the Epic tournaments of late... I will sadly miss OW12 as well this year. I've got a new job in Cambridge, which starts in january - so I'll be in the area from then.

I would be happy to help out with any Epic events in the area and meet for games on a more regular basis. I have no idea where I'll be living yet... but come the new year, if you want to get in touch.

Simon

Hello, whilst Tac Comms has been down I've been doing some enquiring regarding using GW Northampton as the venue for an Epic tournament next March.

After speaking to the manager, it seems that the cheapest option would be to hold the Tournament on a Sunday - it can be held on a Saturday, but if they need the gaming room for a GW promotional event (e.g. come see the latest Codex) the price will be a lot higher.

As it is, it'll just be £20 to hire it on a Sunday, they've got room for 7 tables in their gaming room - which would mean that there'd be a maximum of 14 players, I think this would be a cosy number for a one-day Tournament.  If I remember from the Full Scale Assault event I went to back in '06 12 was the minimum number required.  If it was on the Sunday, I think tickets would only need to be about £2 max...  A princely sum!

I think we've got about 4-5 likely attendees from these forums - if you'd defintiely come to an Epic tournament in Northampton next March, please let me know.

I also need to speak to those nice chaps at EpicUK about the best possible date and other small details, like how one runs a tourney...

I'll be there with probably 2 other locals, possibly more.

March / April is looking empty in the calendar next year with the 1st Company Vets having to move Open War to May instead of April.

Drop an email to info@epic-uk.co.uk to discuss options if you like.
