Thanks.

Well first step of the painting began today. I thought I might as well give all the vehicles a basecoat and drybrush in one go. These are the first of the new metal Space Marine vehicles I've painted and I'm afraid I gotta say that I'm not very impressed with the quality of these. The sides in particular have detail that is all wobbly. The casting itself have some really pitted surfaces in some places and flash obscurea a lot of panel lines. On some models the mould itself seems to have shifted, causing not only mould lines but a wonky model that is irrepairable. A slightly nicer finish could be achieved by carefully layering the highlights on the side panels, but TBH I'm not really in the mood for that sort of work right now. I guess the conclusion is that if you want a nicel looking spacemarine army that is very forgiving to paint, go to Ebay and buy some of the older plastic models.

Another complaint: Is it me or are the GW paints really glossy? I decided to buy a new pot of DA green for this project. After the usual stir to prepare the paint it still came out glossy. Luckily I was able to tone down the glossyness through the drybrushing process, but this could become a real problem when I begin work on the infantry. It is weird though, since my old DA green didn't have this problem. Have they changed the paint formula recently?

One final question: Does anyone have a good reference source for adding chapter and unit designations to DA vehicles?

There is some good stuff in the old codex and in one of the Imperial Armour books. I will do some scanning and send you some details tommorrow.

Cheers

Nice start! But don't get me started on the current GW metals :glare:  I agree go with the old school plastics anyday! (says the man madly bidding for a lot of EA Marine vehicles  )

after painting as many of the new metals as I have, I've not run into the pitting so much as the wobbly mold lines. The rhinos are the worst but they have the deepest details, while the rest aren't as deeply molded but are much cleaner in their casts.

WMN,

I have a heap of pics scanned for you from the IA series and the old codex for Company markings. I have Rhinos, RB, Vindies, W/Winds, L/Raiders of various types, T/Hawks, THTs, Pods and Dreadies. I have sent you a message, if you send me an email I will send them through.

Cheers
Aaron

Working on the infantry. All the tactical stands have been basecoated, drybrushed and washed. I'm still not happy with the consistency of the DA green paint as I'm having dificulties producing sharp clearly defined highlights through the drybrushing. Of course Dark Angels are supposed to be, well, dark, but I can't help but feel that much of the detail drowns like this. I've been thingking about hand paintig the top lighlights traditionally and do a bit of blacklining  for better definition, but obviously that is going to be a lot of work, and I'm not sure it is going to help in the areas where it is most needed like the helmet faces.
I did these two quick test stands to see how bad the problem would be once the other details have been painted on. It still looks a bit sloppy to me, but it does help a bit. Opinions? Suggestions?

Hey, would you consider making me some neat devastator conversions in exchange for Otterware? Because those make me flip out like some sort of caffeinated ninja.

I actually think the green looks good. That shade is difficult to drybrush with as I remember it, but this seems to work.

Seems like the red paint isnt covering fully on the dark background however. Depending on how much time you want to spend - and these minis are highest quality already, no question about it! - you might wanna try highlighting the red from terracotta, over scab red and then blood red (although three stage highlighting on details is pretty insane when its 6mm infantry...). This might also look worse in these pics than IRL, red often looks pretty strange through the camera

As usual your work is outstanding, and its great to see it progressing. Thanks for sharing!

These look really good dude. I personally think you are being a perfectionist, but each to their own.   :))

Also you are painting a dark colour with a black base. Why not try basing one of these so we can see the result. To me, the highlights look fine, and I think a good base will liven up the highlights.

Good detail all round I think.

:agree:

Sure. I am very suceptible to bribes, and I love Otterware :) I just hope I can remember how I did some of them, like the Plasma cannons. I think it is about 4 years since I made these  :p

The current Devastator variants include:

Shoulder mounted Heavy Bolter (very simple to make)
Plasma Cannon (fairly complex)
Missile Launcher (about medium complexity)
Melta cannon (very simple)
Flamer (old mid 90ies style) Fairly complex

I've not bothered with a lascannon but that should be relatively simple to make too.

If you got a few extra Land Speeder weapons I think it should be easy enough to produce more up to date flamers.
