What is with this 'Assault Cannon' malarky, don't we have it down in fluff that they are late-Heresy developments/rare in the period? Rotary Cannons would likely have to be something different.

No folding wings so this isn't a Stormbird.

You're going to take Black Library writer's words over a picture?

Yeah, those engines clearly swivel! That writer wasn't studying his warp spawned visions clearly!

That picture is like 20 years old. Considering how the look of the Thunderhawk has changed over that period, I think we can assume that the Stormbird would be updated in style too.

BL writers making stuff up is even more likely though!

To me if there's a conflict between BL fluff and anything, ANYTHING else, I'd go with the other option 100% of the time. Abnett is particularly bad (especially for being so famous) but everyone tends to slip up with alarming frequency. Excepting perhaps guys like McNeil and Chambers because those at least worked on game material too so I have a lot more trust in them.

To be fair, the Horus Heresy series is a lot more stringently controlled than the rest of the Black Library fare, as they rightly regard it as their premiere series.

Any big introductions to the plot or the tech. need to be ok'd by the Studio/IP team.

Some of the Heresy books are actually rather good! :))

I've been meaning to read some, I'll have to pick up several of them when I'm in Helsinki. I'm still kicking myself for not getting the art book 2 years ago!

But back to our Stormbirds :) What exactly is the big deal with not using a somewhat different model with well playtested Landing Craft statistics (perhaps swap a couple guns here and there)? Remember, it can't actually be superior or it wouldn't have got phased out!

Transport stats for the Colossus hold allot more men than the Stormbird it seems - it is designed to drop almost two epic-scale guard companies.

No, the (old) background stated that infantry versions were rare and only really started getting used during the Heresy. On vehicles it is an entirely different matter. They were in use on Dreadnoughts, Land Speeders and the Baal Predator (which was discovered mid-Great Crusade by the Blood Angels) much earlier, during the Great Crusade itself.

That's G/W's standard when it comes to 40K/Epic Fluff ...  It's like Orwellian New-speak or New-think !  The G/W fluff is changed, revised, altered, etc. as they go along !!  I have not read any of the GW/BL books.  I get my intel in W/D, here and other sites. I'm really a Hammer-phile. As many of you know. And after reading every book that been published on the Slammers, I doubt Abnett's work would come close ... And generally I think the 40K/Epic fluff is "silly" and "cartoony" among other things. And many DS, BT, etc. gamers agree ...  However, that being said, I have 11 Epic Armies and collecting since '90 ... So I may be bi-polar or suffer from multiple personality disorder ... :sulk: :upside: :vD   And based on the flaky GW fluff ... No one here has been able to tell me or show me what a Stormbird looks like ?  If I was going to add Stormbirds to my CSM TO&Es ... I'd use DRM's PAX Dropship ... It may not follow the fluff ... but if any of you have noticed, the "Fluff" does not follow the "fluff" ... For my IG Colossus I used a converted BK ST Shuttle, its as close to the various versions of fluff, near as I can tell ... :D

I think the most obvious factor to roll out here is the age old GW method of explaining things, one description is a earlier Mk, different forgeworld pattern exct - thats how most old images of stuff are explained these days it seems.

Personally after seeing this: http://www.tanksandtrolls.co.uk/40k%20S....ort.htm

Project, I prefer the old Stormbird to the modern 'Giant Aquila'.

There is always the old Imperial Lander

And L4 has a pic of the old marine dropship as well.

Yes, that's original Dropship for SM1. Built by Bob Naismith, the same sculpter for DRM & E/W.  That was the proto-type model ... never went into production.  I have 2 of the limited release Imperial Dropships, that TRC mention. These were made around the TL time frame. But saw limited release a couple of years later. I'll post pics of them if you like ... :D
